AlienVault launched its free Open Threat Exchange (OTX) Reputation Monitor Alert in 2013. Organizations could register public IP addresses and domains to receive alerts about reputation listings, hacker-forum mentions, and unexpected DNS or SSL certificate changes. The announcement describes a historical service launch; it does not establish whether the monitor is available today.
What was AlienVault OTX Reputation Monitor?
It was an online monitoring service announced by AlienVault in 2013—not a physical security appliance. The service extended OTX, AlienVault’s collaborative threat-intelligence system. Organizations registered the public IP addresses and domains they wanted watched. According to SecurityWeek’s August 1, 2013 report, alerts could flag when a registered address or domain appeared in a hacker forum, a blacklist, or AlienVault’s IP-reputation database. The service also watched for unexpected DNS registration and SSL certificate changes.
How did the monitoring work?
Users first registered the public IPs and domains they wanted monitored. The service then used OTX threat intelligence and reputation sources to notify them of relevant findings or changes. AlienVault described OTX as crowd-sourced: security professionals contributed threat information that could help identify compromised systems being used to attack others. The launch report says alerts for suspected compromise included remediation recommendations.
Could it tell you if an IP was blacklisted?
That was among the advertised alert types: the report says the service notified users when a registered address appeared on a blacklist, in a hacker forum, or in AlienVault’s IP-reputation database. An alert is an indication to investigate, not proof by itself that an IP is compromised or that every blacklist will report it.

Yes. The launch report says Reputation Monitor watched DNS registrations and SSL certificates for unexpected changes. The announcement does not specify the exact monitoring interval, which DNS or certificate sources were covered, or how an unexpected change was distinguished from an authorized update.
Was AlienVault OTX free?
AlienVault described the Reputation Monitor Alert as free to IT and security professionals, with registration required for the assets they wanted monitored. This is the 2013 launch offer, not confirmation of present-day pricing or availability.

What to do if an IP appears in threat intelligence
- Validate the finding. Check the indicator, source, timestamp, and context. A reputation listing can be stale, mistaken, or relevant to a different service or system sharing the address.
- Identify the asset and its owner. Confirm whether the address is yours, what system used it at the reported time, and whether it is shared or dynamically assigned.
- Review activity around the alert. Examine relevant DNS, certificate, firewall, authentication, and endpoint records for unauthorized changes or suspicious communications.
- Contain and remediate if evidence supports compromise. Follow your incident-response process, secure affected systems, and address the cause before restoring normal operation. AlienVault’s launch report says the service offered remediation recommendations, but does not document a specific procedure.
- Request correction or delisting where appropriate. If a listing is inaccurate or the issue has been resolved, use the relevant blacklist or intelligence provider’s review process; removal is not automatic.
Is the service available now?
The available launch and follow-up announcements establish what AlienVault described in 2013, 2014, and 2018. They do not establish the monitor’s current ownership, branding, availability, or feature set. Verify those details with the current service provider before relying on it for operational monitoring.
