Alibaba announced a plan to invest at least RMB 380 billion (US$53 billion) over three years in cloud computing and AI infrastructure. That was a commitment, not money already spent. The “stock surge” came later: Reuters reported a 7% rise in Alibaba’s U.S.-listed shares after its May 13, 2026 earnings announcement and management comments about clearer returns on AI investment. Subsequent results showed rapid cloud growth alongside higher capital spending, weaker net income and a large free-cash-flow outflow.
How much is Alibaba investing in AI?
On February 24, 2025, Alibaba said it planned to invest at least RMB 380 billion (US$53 billion) over the following three years in cloud computing and AI infrastructure. The dollar amount is Alibaba’s conversion in its original announcement. The company said the plan exceeded its total spending in those areas over the previous decade. Alibaba’s announcement describes a forward-looking plan, not a guarantee that the full amount would be spent or that it would generate a particular return.
The investment is intended to expand the underlying capacity used to provide cloud and AI services. It should not be read as a standalone AI product budget: Alibaba grouped cloud computing and AI infrastructure together, and the announcement did not provide a more detailed allocation.

Why did Alibaba stock rise?
The 7% rise was a one-day market reaction reported by Reuters after Alibaba’s May 13, 2026 earnings announcement. Reuters linked the move to management’s comments that returns on AI investment were becoming clearer, as well as expectations for continued AI-related cloud growth. The same report said Alibaba missed market expectations for fourth-quarter profit. A share-price move on one day is not evidence that the investment will succeed, nor does it establish a lasting trend. Reuters’ May 13 report also said Alibaba expected to exceed its original three-year investment plan, but disclosed no replacement spending total.

Is Alibaba’s AI investment paying off?
The evidence is mixed: cloud revenue grew quickly, but spending rose sharply and the reported quarter’s company-wide profit and cash flow weakened. In results for the quarter ended June 30, 2026, Alibaba reported AI Cloud and Compute Services revenue of RMB 48.437 billion (US$7.139 billion), up 45% year over year. Adjusted EBITA for that segment increased 133% to RMB 5.628 billion (US$830 million). Alibaba attributed the improvement to revenue growth and operating efficiency, partly offset by investment in customer growth and technology. These figures indicate progress in the cloud segment, but do not by themselves show that the original infrastructure pledge has produced company-wide profit growth. Alibaba’s results filed with the SEC.
- Capital spending: Company-wide capital expenditures were RMB 67.678 billion (US$9.975 billion), up 75% year over year.
- Cash flow: Free cash flow was an outflow of RMB 44.670 billion (US$6.584 billion), which Alibaba mainly attributed to increased cloud infrastructure expenditure.
- Net income: Net income fell 75% year over year to RMB 10.444 billion (US$1.539 billion).
In May 2026, Reuters also reported that AI-related products made up 30% of external customer revenue in Alibaba’s cloud division in the March quarter. The company expected that share to exceed 50% about a year later; that was a management expectation, not a subsequently confirmed result in the cited reporting. CEO Eddie Wu said in prepared remarks, “As we continue to ramp up our supply, our AI and Cloud revenue growth will accelerate further in the coming quarters, alongside continued improvement in profitability.” This is management’s outlook, not an independently verified forecast. How later disclosures relate to the original pledge
Alibaba made a separate financing announcement on August 26, 2026, saying it had completed an HK$80 billion share placement. The company planned to direct approximately 60% of net proceeds to global computing infrastructure and approximately 40% to hyperscale AI data centers and upgrades to cloud storage, databases and high-performance networking. This later financing disclosure is distinct from the February 2025 three-year investment plan; it does not supply a revised total for that plan. Alibaba’s placement announcement.

Market reactions depended on the specific results and date. Reuters reported a 7% rise after the May 13, 2026 announcement. After Alibaba’s August 2026 results, the Associated Press reported that U.S.-traded shares fell more than 3%. That quarter featured 45% year-over-year growth in AI cloud and compute revenue, but also 75% higher capital expenditures and a 75% decline in net income. The differing reactions underscore that revenue growth, spending and profitability can point in different directions; neither day’s move settles the long-term investment case.
