Alibaba and Tencent were among the investors in Chinese AI company Zhipu’s 2023 financing, which totaled 2.5 billion yuan. Bloomberg converted that total to $342 million; TechCrunch reported it as $340 million. The figure was an aggregate for the year—not a disclosed joint investment of $340 million by Alibaba and Tencent.

How much did Zhipu raise?

Bloomberg reported on October 20, 2023, that Zhipu had raised 2.5 billion yuan that year, equivalent to about $342 million in Bloomberg’s conversion. TechCrunch, also reporting on October 20, put the same yuan total at $340 million. The difference is a variation in the dollar conversion and rounding, not evidence of two different funding totals.

Publisher and report date Reported 2023 financing total Dollar conversion
Bloomberg, October 20, 2023 2.5 billion yuan About $342 million
TechCrunch, October 20, 2023 2.5 billion yuan $340 million

Did Alibaba and Tencent invest $340 million together?

No such joint contribution is established by the reports. Alibaba and Tencent were named among a larger group of investors in Zhipu’s financing; the headline dollar figure represents the company’s reported aggregate financing for 2023. The sources do not state Alibaba’s or Tencent’s individual investment amount.

Who else invested in Zhipu?

The investor names differ somewhat between the two reports, but both identify a broad group rather than a two-company deal.

  • Bloomberg named Alibaba, Tencent, Ant Group, Xiaomi, HongShan and Meituan.
  • TechCrunch named Alibaba, Tencent, Ant Group, Xiaomi, Meituan, Kingsoft, TAL Education Group and Boss Zhipin, alongside venture investors and a state fund managed by Legend Capital.

Neither account assigns specific portions of the total to those participants.

What is Zhipu?

TechCrunch described Zhipu in 2023 as a company founded in 2019 and spun out of Tsinghua University. It identified Tang Jie, a Tsinghua computer science professor, as the company’s leader at the time. Those details describe the company as reported in 2023, not necessarily its current leadership or product lineup.

For later business context, Zhipu’s December 2025 Hong Kong exchange prospectus describes a business spanning foundation models, AI agents and a Model-as-a-Service platform for clients. That later description helps explain the company’s focus, but it does not establish the terms or investor contributions of the 2023 financing.
