Florida Panthers captain Aleksander Barkov left the team’s October 1, 2026, game against the San Jose Sharks after an awkward fall during a second-period power play. Coach Paul Maurice said Barkov would be evaluated the next day and that the incident was unrelated to the right-knee injury that sidelined him last season. The official report available as of October 3 did not confirm a diagnosis, severity or return timetable.
What happened to Barkov against the Sharks?
Barkov went down at 8:07 of the second period while battling for the puck in the right corner during a Florida power play. He then left for the dressing room. The Panthers’ official recap said his left leg bent awkwardly; an Associated Press account described his left knee as appearing to buckle. Those are descriptions of what appeared to happen on the ice, not a confirmed medical diagnosis.
Florida went on to lose 4-3 in overtime. NHL.com’s game report and the Panthers’ official recap document the game and incident. The AP report distributed by FOX Sports also describes the apparent left-knee movement.
What did the Panthers say about his injury?
After the game, Maurice said, “He’ll get looked at tomorrow.” He added, “It’s not related to his injury last year at all. We will have a good idea by tomorrow afternoon.” NHL.com reported those remarks. They indicate that an evaluation was planned and that the coach expected more clarity; they do not provide its outcome or confirm when Barkov might play again.

How this differs from Barkov’s previous knee injury
Barkov missed the entire 2025-26 season after injuring his right knee on the first day of training camp. NHL.com reported that he had surgery the following day to repair his ACL and MCL. The event against San Jose appeared to involve his left leg, and Maurice explicitly said it was unrelated to the previous injury. The confirmed details about that earlier right-knee injury do not establish the diagnosis or severity of this new incident.
What is not confirmed yet?
In the official reporting available as of October 3, no diagnosis, severity, treatment plan or return date had been announced. Until the Panthers or NHL provide a medical update, the careful description is that Barkov left after an awkward fall with an apparent lower-body injury—not that he sustained a specific knee injury.
