ALBATROSS is a research robot designed to be released from the air, land on water, and then sail to a target. It uses the same rigid wings first to autorotate and slow its descent, then as sails after landing. The project, from Singapore University of Technology and Design, presents the platform as a way to deliver an autonomous sensor to remote waters where reaching the measurement site is part of the problem.
How a falling robot becomes a sailing robot
ALBATROSS works in stages rather than changing into a wholly different vehicle. Its rigid, dual-purpose wings provide lift as they autorotate during descent. After water entry, the platform can right itself passively, helped by a low centre of gravity. The wings then catch the wind as sails for water navigation. An oscillating, fish-inspired rudder adds thrust when winds are weak and helps with difficult turns.
According to the ALBATROSS project description, using shared structure for descent and sailing avoids the need for separate aerial propulsion or a complicated mechanical transformation. The project frames this as a way to reduce mechanisms needed across the two environments; it does not provide a comparative cost or capability study against other aerial-marine robots.

| Variant | Reported demonstration | Reported figure |
|---|---|---|
| S-variant | Aerial release, autorotating descent, water landing, and passive self-righting | Released from 150 m, according to the project page; it does not state a publication year for this result. |
| L-variant | Autonomous waypoint sailing, including upwind tacking | Average draw of 3.98 W in the reported sailing experiment; the project page does not state a publication year. |
| L-variant | Autonomous environmental sensing | Approximately three hours; measurements included humidity and heat flux. The project page does not state a publication year. |
The project page also reports three actuators for sailing and manoeuvring, without stating a publication year for that figure. These are specific demonstrations, not evidence of long-duration operation or performance in every wind, wave, or deployment condition.
What autonomy—and machine learning—contributed
The L-variant’s waypoint sailing and upwind tacking show autonomous navigation in the reported experiment. A reinforcement-learning controller was also explored as a proof of concept, but the project page says it did not outperform the rule-based controller. The reported sailing result therefore does not establish that machine learning improved the robot’s performance.

Who developed ALBATROSS
The project page identifies Singapore University of Technology and Design and names Danial Sufiyan, Brian Leonard Suhadi, Luke Soe Thura Win, Xinyu Cai, Wei Jun Ang, and Shaohui Foong as collaborators. Researcher Shane Kyi Hla Win’s profile lists the work as “ALBATROSS: A bio-inspired, aerially deployable, autonomous sailing sensor platform” in Science Robotics in 2026. The technical figures described here are reported on the project page, which says they are based on the manuscript; the linked journal paper was not independently inspected for this article.

ALBATROSS is presented as a research platform for aerially deploying an autonomous sensor on remote water, not as an identified retail robot. The published project description supports a focused set of demonstrations: an S-variant descent and landing test, and L-variant sailing and sensing trials. It does not establish a consumer product, a commercial deployment, or a basis for ranking the design against other platforms.
