Alan Ritchson is being reported as Jason Momoa’s replacement in Sony’s live-action Helldivers movie, but the available coverage does not establish that Sony or PlayStation has officially confirmed the casting. TheWrap first reported Ritchson was in talks for a role; later coverage described him as Momoa’s replacement. The film’s latest reported theatrical release date is June 9, 2028.
Which Sony video game movie is this?
The project is a live-action adaptation of Helldivers, the satirical science-fiction shooter franchise developed by Arrowhead Game Studios. Sony Pictures and PlayStation Productions are producing it, with Justin Lin directing, according to TheWrap’s September 18, 2026 report.
The games center on Helldivers, soldiers fighting alien threats in the name of Super Earth. That premise gives the film a source world, but the reporting cited here does not establish the movie’s plot, characters, or which Helldiver Ritchson might play.

What is known about the casting change?
- Momoa’s departure: On June 8, 2026, TheWrap reported that Jason Momoa had left the project and that casting was continuing. The report did not state why he departed. Read TheWrap’s report.
- Ritchson in talks: On September 18, TheWrap reported that Alan Ritchson was in talks to play one of the Helldivers. That wording indicates negotiations or discussions, not a completed casting announcement. Read the casting report.
- Described as Momoa’s replacement: On October 1, GamesRadar characterized Ritchson as having replaced Momoa. Read GamesRadar’s update.
Those reports support saying Ritchson has been reported as the replacement. They do not, on their own, support calling the casting officially confirmed by Sony or PlayStation. The Direct used “officially replaces” in its October 6 headline, but its article attributed the casting and date information to other coverage rather than citing a direct studio announcement. When will the Helldivers movie be released?
The latest date in the cited coverage is June 9, 2028. GamesRadar reported that date after a Sony schedule update. Earlier, TheWrap’s September 18 report listed November 10, 2027, so that earlier date has been superseded in the reporting covered here. Release schedules can change; the newer date is a reported theatrical date, not a guarantee that the film will arrive then.
