The Akko 5098B Wasteland Survival is a compact wireless mechanical keyboard with a Fallout-like visual theme, a retained numpad, and a small display and roller that prove more useful than decoration. Notebookcheck’s reviewer praised its keycaps, connection options, and cushioned typing feel, but also found scratchy switches, weak stabilizers, limited customization software, and disappointing wireless endurance. It makes the most sense if you want its distinctive design and controls; it is less compelling if easy modification or long battery life is your priority.
What the Akko 5098B is
The 5098B uses an 1800 compact layout: it keeps a full numpad while fitting the keys into a more compact footprint than a traditional full-size keyboard. The Wasteland Survival edition adds Cherry-profile, dye-sublimated PBT keycaps with a visual style that resembles Fallout. That describes the aesthetic, not an official Fallout license.
Akko’s official specifications list dimensions of approximately 409 × 138.4 × 32.3 mm, an ABS frame, a PBT keycap set, a TFT display, and an aluminum-alloy panel. Notebookcheck’s review unit weighed 1,011 g and had a PP plate with a silicone gasket mount. Its reported dimensions were 409 × 138.4 mm; the review does not give a third dimension.

Akko lists three ways to connect: USB-C wired, 2.4 GHz wireless through the included receiver, and Bluetooth 5.0. Its stated polling rates are 1,000 Hz in wired and 2.4 GHz modes and 125 Hz over Bluetooth. The company also lists south-facing RGB lighting, an 8,000mAh battery, gasket mounting, and hot-swap sockets for 3-pin and 5-pin switches.

The 1.47-inch display supports multimedia functions and user-uploaded GIFs through Akko Cloud Driver. Akko lists V3 Piano Pro and Ice Cream Pink linear switches as options; the Notebookcheck unit used V3 Piano Pro linear switches. The reviewer found the horizontally mounted roller and display useful in practice, rather than merely decorative. As Julian van der Merwe wrote in Notebookcheck’s review, “The display isn’t just vanity, either, which is a nice change from other mechanical keyboard designs.”
How it feels and sounds
Notebookcheck’s reviewer praised the crisp keycap printing and described the board’s sound as thocky, with a cushioned feel from the gasket mount. The layout was also easy for the reviewer to get used to. Those are impressions from one review unit, not a guarantee that every user will have the same experience.

The switches and stabilizers were less successful. The reviewer described the switches as scratchy and wobbly, and found the stabilizers unlubed, with a particularly poor-feeling spacebar stabilizer. Akko’s hot-swap sockets mean compatible switches can be replaced without soldering, but that does not solve every modification issue: the reviewer found the case difficult to open because it uses firm plastic clips rather than screws.
The included transparent caps also struck the reviewer as visually chaotic. Whether that is a drawback depends on how well you like the supplied look; the more important practical trade-off is that the board is not especially friendly to deeper case modifications.

Wireless battery life: capacity is not runtime
Akko specifies an 8,000mAh battery, but that capacity alone does not establish how long the keyboard will last between charges. Notebookcheck’s reviewer reported that their unit scarcely lasted more than four eight-hour workdays on 2.4 GHz in day-to-day use. This is a single reviewer observation, not a controlled battery test or a promised runtime for all users.
The review attributes the short endurance in part to bright RGB lighting and the TFT screen. Dimming the lighting and disabling the display may extend runtime, but doing so reduces access to two of the board’s signature features. Your results may also differ with settings and usage.

Customization software and operating-system support
Akko’s product page describes the keyboard’s operating-system compatibility broadly, but Notebookcheck says the proprietary Akko driver is Windows-only. That distinction matters: basic typing compatibility is not the same as having configuration software for macros, layouts, or display customization. The reviewer found that customization less convenient on macOS and Linux.
Should you buy the Akko 5098B?
- Consider it if: you want a compact layout that keeps the numpad, multiple connection modes, a useful display and roller, and a characterful keycap design.
- Think twice if: you expect polished stock stabilizers, smooth and steady switches, easy case access, or long wireless runtime with the screen and lighting active.
- Check before ordering: confirm the current layout, colorway, and availability. At the time of Notebookcheck’s review, published September 11, 2026 and updated September 14, 2026, it reported Amazon prices of $109.99–$118.99 depending on colorway and said the Wasteland Survival edition did not appear on Amazon. Those are dated report details, not a live price or stock check.
