Akamai agreed to acquire Janrain, an enterprise customer identity and access management (CIAM) provider, on January 7, 2019, and announced completion later that month. Akamai reported paying $123.6 million in cash. Its stated aim was to combine Janrain’s customer identity technology with Akamai’s security and edge platform.
When did Akamai acquire Janrain?
Akamai announced the agreement on January 7, 2019. It announced that the acquisition had closed in January 2019. The company’s newsroom version of the completion announcement is dated January 23, while its investor-relations release is dated January 24; both confirm completion that month. The Federal Trade Commission also published an early termination notice dated January 31, 2019. These records establish the month of completion, but do not justify treating one release date as the precise closing date.

What did Janrain’s Identity Cloud do?
Janrain provided customer identity and access management software for enterprises. Its Identity Cloud supported customer identity information, login and registration, privacy controls, and authentication. CIAM systems handle identity and access for an organization’s customers, rather than primarily managing employee accounts.
Akamai characterized Janrain’s services as a way for enterprises to offload login and registration workloads. In its acquisition announcement, Akamai said the technology could help protect online engagements and support adaptive authentication.
Why did Akamai acquire Janrain?
Akamai presented the deal as a strategic fit between customer identity and its existing security and edge capabilities. The company said combining those capabilities was intended to strengthen digital trust and security, including defenses against fraudulent account creation and credential compromise. Those were Akamai’s stated objectives, not independently measured results of the acquisition.
At completion, Akamai CEO Dr. Tom Leighton said, “Adding identity management to the Akamai Edge will provide an added layer of security for our customers.” The completion announcement also described expected benefits in forward-looking terms.

Akamai’s 2020 Form 10-K says it had incorporated Janrain technology into its Intelligent Edge Platform. That establishes integration by the time of the filing, but the reviewed company and regulatory records do not establish whether Janrain-derived CIAM technology is available today under a particular product name or as a standalone product.
