Green careers span renewable-energy work and jobs that make other industries more sustainable. Renewable energy employed at least 16.6 million people worldwide in 2024, but the latest global review does not measure AI’s separate effect on those jobs. If you are exploring this field, start with the work you want to do, then compare local demand, training routes and employer requirements.
What counts as a green job?
There is no single boundary that covers every use of “green job.” The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) describes two ways to measure it: an output approach, which counts jobs at establishments producing defined environmental goods and services, and a process approach, which counts jobs involving environmentally beneficial production practices, even when the employer makes something else. The approaches can overlap and use different measurement methods. The BLS overview was last modified in 2013, so it is useful for the definition, not current career projections. BLS: Green Jobs Overview
Renewable-energy jobs are one narrower part of the picture, not a synonym for all green work. The global figures below concern employment directly or indirectly linked to renewable energy; they do not count every job that improves energy efficiency, reduces waste or supports other environmental goals.

What do employment figures say about demand?
Global renewable-energy employment
IRENA and the International Labour Organization estimated that at least 16.6 million people were directly or indirectly employed in renewable energy worldwide in 2024. Their annual review, published January 11, 2026, reported 2.3% growth from 2023—the slowest rate in its series—even as renewable capacity additions reached a record. The figure is a dated sector estimate, not a live 2026 count or a forecast of vacancies in a particular place. IRENA and ILO: Renewable energy and jobs, Annual review 2025
The review attributes moderated employment growth in part to economies of scale, automation and other technological innovation. It also points to excess equipment-manufacturing capacity and grid bottlenecks that caused generation curtailment. These factors help explain why growing renewable capacity does not translate one-for-one into more jobs: employment also depends on technology, productivity, supply-chain location, geography and policy.
For historical context, IRENA’s summary of its 2024 annual review put global renewable-energy employment at 16.2 million in 2023, up from 13.7 million in 2022. Solar photovoltaic work accounted for 7.1 million jobs, or 44% of the reported renewable-energy workforce, in 2023. These are 2023 figures, not the latest estimate. IRENA: Energy and Jobs
United States example
The U.S. Department of Energy’s August 28, 2024 summary of the 2024 U.S. Energy and Employment Report said U.S. clean-energy employment grew 4.2% in 2023, compared with 2.0% growth in the overall U.S. economy. Solar employment grew 5.3% and wind employment 4.5% in the United States that year; clean-energy jobs grew in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. The report draws on a customized survey of energy employers that augments BLS data. These historical national figures are not global results, current openings or proof that a particular occupation is expanding near you. Which green jobs could you explore?
Renewable-energy work includes hands-on trades as well as planning, manufacturing and technical roles. IRENA and ILO’s 2024 annual review identifies these mid-skill examples:
Rank #3
- Installation: solar panel installers and electricians help put systems in place.
- Operations and maintenance: wind turbine technicians and hydropower operators help keep energy assets working.
- Construction and fabrication: welders and other skilled trades contribute to building and maintaining projects.
- Adjacent trades: plumbers may contribute to relevant energy systems and infrastructure.
These are examples, not a complete list of green careers or a guarantee of local demand. Depending on the employer and project, work may also involve manufacturing, system design, planning or research. Compare the actual duties and working conditions rather than relying on a job title alone. IRENA and ILO: Renewable Energy and Jobs, Annual Review 2024
How can you get a job in renewable energy?
Choose a route based on the role you want and the experience you already have. Relevant paths include technical and vocational education, an apprenticeship or on-the-job learning, reskilling from another trade, and degree study for some advanced technical work. No single certificate is universally required: prerequisites and credentials vary by occupation, jurisdiction, employer and project.
Rank #4
- Pick a work area. Decide whether installation, operations, maintenance, construction, manufacturing, planning or research best fits your interests and strengths.
- Check local opportunities. Look for employers, project pipelines, travel expectations and regional labor-market information where you want to work. Global or national growth figures cannot tell you whether a local opening exists.
- Read real job requirements. Compare postings for required skills, experience, safety preparation and credentials. Check whether a qualification is recognized by employers in your location before paying for it.
- Choose a practical training route. Consider existing trade skills, vocational study, an apprenticeship, employer-based learning or a degree, depending on the work and its entry requirements.
- Weigh access and job quality. Consider hands-on practice, total training cost, safety, worker protections, inclusion and whether the program is accessible to you.
IRENA and ILO describe training approaches that connect learning to practical needs. In Brazil, a labor union worked with local universities and technical schools on solar training from installation through system design and maintenance, including occupational health and safety. An ILO- and Sida-supported pilot in Zambia worked with private-sector partners on demand-driven training and targeted women’s participation. These are examples from particular places, not programs available everywhere. IRENA and ILO: Renewable Energy and Jobs, Annual Review 2024

What is AI’s impact on green jobs?
The evidence supports a cautious answer. IRENA and ILO’s annual review for 2025 identifies automation and other technological innovation as factors moderating renewable-energy employment growth, but it does not isolate AI’s effect. It does not estimate how many jobs AI creates or displaces, or identify specific green occupations AI will eliminate or create. The available figures therefore cannot support a distinct AI jobs forecast.
For a career decision, separate the broader effects of technology on productivity and work from claims about AI and a particular occupation. The employment estimates show the scale of renewable-energy work and its recent growth; they cannot predict whether a specific role in your area will expand or change because of AI.
