There is no universal winner: Airtel roaming is usually the more convenient choice when you need to keep your Indian number reachable, while a local SIM or travel eSIM may suit a data-focused trip if your phone is compatible and the destination offer fits your needs. Compare the exact destination, trip length, data allowance, calls and texts, coverage, setup, and total cost before choosing.
Choose based on what you need your connection to do
These options overlap, but they are not interchangeable. Airtel roaming extends service on your existing number, a local SIM typically gives you a number from a destination operator, and a travel eSIM adds a digital line when your device and provider support it.
- Choose Airtel roaming if continuity on your Indian number and simpler setup matter more than finding the lowest possible data price. Check that Airtel covers your destination and that the pack includes the calls, texts, and data you need.
- Consider a local SIM if you want a destination number or are comparing local prepaid data offers. Availability, registration rules, coverage, and activation requirements depend on the country.
- Consider a travel eSIM if you want to arrange connectivity digitally and your phone is eSIM-capable and unlocked for a different carrier. Many travel eSIMs are data-only, so check for voice, SMS, or a local number if those matter.
There is no destination-independent price winner. Airtel’s prices and allowances are explicit, but only useful if the destination is covered; local SIM and eSIM offers must be checked for the place and dates of travel.
Compare the options that matter on your trip
| Decision | Airtel international roaming | Local SIM | Travel eSIM |
|---|---|---|---|
| Keep using your Airtel number | Best fit for using the same number abroad, subject to destination and pack terms. | Usually provides a different local number. Check whether your Airtel line can remain active separately. | Can work as a second line on supported devices, but keeping the Airtel line active may still incur roaming charges. |
| Setup | Use your Airtel account and check roaming activation, destination coverage, and pack validity before departure. | Obtain and activate a local SIM; the process varies by country. | Often purchased and installed digitally; activation conditions depend on the provider and destination. |
| Price and data | Pack allowances and prices are listed by Airtel, but availability and coverage are destination-specific. Unbundled standard-rate use can be costly. | Compare current prepaid offers from operators at your destination, including any registration or activation conditions. | Compare the destination, supported network, validity, high-speed data allowance, and voice/SMS inclusions. No single provider or price is established here. |
| Device fit | Airtel says the international roaming pack process is the same for its eSIM and physical SIM customers. | Requires a compatible SIM format; using a different carrier on a locked iPhone requires unlocking. | Requires an eSIM-capable device and, for a different provider, a carrier-unlocked device. Models and regional support vary. |
| Calls, texts, and OTPs | Check the pack’s incoming and outgoing call/SMS rules. OTP delivery and banking functions are not guaranteed by the pack description. | A local number can help with local calls, but it is not your Airtel number. | Many plans are data-only. Confirm voice, SMS, and local-number support before buying. |
| Coverage | Check Airtel’s current covered-country list and partner network for your destination. | Check the destination operator’s coverage map for the places you will visit. | Check destination availability and the underlying network or networks the provider uses. |
The local SIM and travel eSIM columns describe common decision criteria, not terms shared by every provider. Prices, registration, coverage, and included services vary by destination.

What Airtel’s listed roaming offers include

Do not treat Airtel’s older one-year-plan announcement as the terms of the currently surfaced ₹4,999 listing. On 25 April 2025, Airtel announced an NRI plan at ₹4,000 with 5 GB abroad, 100 voice minutes abroad, and India benefits. Airtel said its portfolio then covered 189 countries. Those were dated company statements, not confirmation of current rates or coverage. Airtel’s 25 April 2025 announcement.

Understand activation and pay-as-you-go charges
Airtel’s terms say international roaming is disabled by default. Buying a roaming pack enables it. Postpaid customers can enable roaming without buying a pack, but usage is charged at standard rates and the service remains enabled until they disable it. Check the destination tariff before using service without a pack; do not assume the daily mechanism described below makes all use free or unlimited.
Prepaid: ₹118 is an activation fee, not a data pack
Airtel’s terms describe a ₹118 prepaid activation fee valid for 28 days. It allows use at standard rates and includes unlimited incoming SMS; it does not include a travel data allowance. You also need an active prepaid base pack with valid service validity. Calls, data, and outgoing SMS draw from your main account balance at standard rates, and insufficient balance prevents those services. Airtel international roaming terms.
Postpaid: the ₹698 daily mechanism has conditions
Under Airtel’s terms, standard charges apply first in a covered country. Once that day’s charges exceed ₹698, Airtel automatically applies a ₹698 one-day pack, which runs through 11:59 p.m. local time. The described pack includes 1 GB, 100 incoming/outgoing minutes for India and local calls, 10 outgoing SMS, and unlimited incoming SMS. After the high-speed data allowance is exhausted, speed falls to 80 kbps; additional calls and SMS are charged at discounted rates. Airtel says thresholds and benefits can change, so check the current terms before relying on this mechanism. Airtel international roaming terms.

Check whether your phone can use a travel eSIM
Apple says a compatible iPhone can use a travel eSIM from a local or worldwide provider. For a different carrier, the phone must be unlocked; Apple identifies “No SIM Restrictions” in the carrier-lock information as the relevant status. Support varies by model and region, so confirm your exact device before buying. Apple: About eSIM on iPhone.
On supported iPhones, you can keep a home line and a travel line available together in some configurations, but only one cellular data network is used at a time. Apple warns that keeping both lines active may still result in home-line roaming charges, depending on your settings and use. Choose the data line deliberately and review the home line’s roaming settings. Apple: Use eSIM while travelling internationally with your iPhone.
Airtel says its international roaming pack process is the same for Airtel eSIM and physical SIM customers. It advises setting up the Airtel eSIM before departure and checking usage in the Airtel app; that timing guidance does not necessarily apply to a travel eSIM from another provider. Airtel: Using an eSIM for international roaming.
Make the comparison before you leave
- List your needs. Decide whether you need your Airtel number, local calls or SMS, mobile data only, or all three. Estimate trip length and data use.
- Check Airtel for the destination. Confirm that the country and partner network are covered, then review the current pack’s validity, allowances, and eligibility in the Airtel app or site.
- Compare local offers for the same trip. Check a destination operator’s current SIM options and any registration requirements. For eSIMs, verify coverage, underlying networks, data allowance, validity, and whether voice or SMS is included.
- Confirm device compatibility. For a different carrier on iPhone, verify the phone is unlocked; for eSIM, verify that the exact model and regional version support it.
- Check the total cost and settings. Include any activation or registration costs, and understand how the Airtel line will behave if you keep it active alongside a travel line.
Airtel has described its roaming packs as more affordable than most local SIMs, but that is the company’s promotional comparison, not an independent price study. Compare the actual offers for your destination rather than relying on a general savings claim. Airtel’s 25 April 2025 announcement.
