A cyber-related outage at Collins Aerospace disrupted passenger check-in and baggage handling at selected European airports beginning September 19, 2025. Brussels faced the largest reported disruption, while Berlin and London operations were less affected. The European Commission said at the time that air traffic control and aviation safety were unaffected; this was not reported as an air traffic control failure.
What the airport cyberattack disrupted
Collins Aerospace said the incident affected electronic systems used for passenger check-in, boarding-pass and baggage-tag printing, and dispatching luggage. The company described the impact as “limited to electronic customer check-in and baggage drop” and said manual check-in could mitigate it, according to the Associated Press report of September 21, 2025.
With electronic processes unavailable or impaired, airport and airline staff used manual workarounds, including handwritten boarding passes and backup laptops. Those procedures helped flights continue but slowed check-in and baggage handling.

Which airports were affected, and how badly?
The disruption began late Friday, September 19, 2025, and affected systems at selected airports in Berlin, Brussels and London. It did not affect every airport or flight equally.

| Airport or location | Reported impact during the initial disruption |
|---|---|
| Brussels | The hardest hit among the airports covered in AP’s September 21 report. Brussels Airport reported 25 outbound cancellations Saturday and 50 Sunday, and asked airlines to cancel nearly 140 departing flights scheduled for Monday, September 22. It also said it maintained 85% of scheduled departures over the weekend. |
| Heathrow, London | Operations showed signs of improvement by Sunday. Heathrow said the vast majority of flights continued to operate. |
| Berlin | Operations showed signs of improvement by Sunday, though delays and longer waits remained possible. |
The cancellation and departure figures are contemporaneous Brussels Airport figures reported by AP, not a final total for Europe or for the full incident. The sources do not establish a final cross-airport cancellation total.
Was air traffic control or flight safety affected?
No such impact was reported in the contemporaneous account. The European Commission said aviation safety and air traffic control were unaffected. The incident concerned airport passenger-processing and baggage systems, rather than the systems that direct aircraft in flight.

The Commission also said there was no indication at that point of a widespread or severe attack and that the origin remained under investigation. The airport statements and AP account did not confirm who was responsible or how the systems were accessed. Claims elsewhere about a specific actor, vulnerability or arrest should not be treated as established without confirmation from an authoritative investigation.

How the recovery was expected to proceed
Berlin Brandenburg Airport’s October 2, 2025 update said almost all flights could take place by then, but longer waits at check-in, boarding and baggage reclaim might continue over the long weekend. It reported that the supplier’s stated goal was to restore the central handling system by October 5, followed by airport IT security tests and a staged reconnection of airlines from Monday. This was a recovery plan announced at the time, not a statement of current airport operations. See the Berlin Brandenburg Airport update.

What affected passengers should do
If you are travelling now
The disruption and recovery notices above are from September and October 2025 and do not indicate present-day flight status. Check your airline’s current flight information and the relevant airport’s updates before leaving for the airport.
If your flight was affected during the incident
Airports advised passengers at the time to check flight status before travelling and use alternative check-in methods where available. Follow the airline’s instructions for any rebooking or other arrangements tied to your booking.

- Built-in IR illumination up to 200 meters
- Look 30 degrees above the horizon
- See incidents clearly up to 40x away
- Classify and identify people and vehicles
- Built-in wiper for high-quality images
If checked baggage did not arrive
During the recovery period, Berlin Brandenburg Airport advised passengers to report missing baggage to the baggage-tracing office at their destination and contact their airline. It identified the airline as the passenger’s contractual partner and main point of contact for undelivered checked baggage. The airport’s October 2 notice stated: “Only the airline can provide information about the whereabouts and subsequent delivery of baggage.”
Do not confuse this with the September 2026 NATS outage
Search results may also surface a separate NATS technical outage in September 2026 that caused widespread flight disruption. That was a different incident, not a continuation of the 2025 Collins Aerospace disruption. The UK Civil Aviation Authority’s September 9, 2026 statement concerns that later NATS event; it should not be used to determine passenger rights for the 2025 cyber-related outage.
