Choose the earbuds that match your phone first. AirPods are the easier choice for an iPhone owner who also uses Apple devices. Google Pixel Buds are the more natural choice for Android users, especially those invested in Google services. That rule is a starting point, not a sound-quality ranking: AirPods can pair with Android as Bluetooth headphones, while the best choice still depends on fit, noise cancellation, model-specific features, battery claims, durability, price and local availability.

The short answer

If your everyday phone is an iPhone, start with the AirPods range; WIRED’s August 2026 guide specifically recommends AirPods Pro 3 for iPhone users. If your everyday phone is Android, start with Google Pixel Buds; the same guide recommends Pixel Buds Pro 2 for Android and Pixel Buds 2a as its pick for most people. Those are editorial recommendations, not universal winners. Ear shape, tip preference, operating-system version, region and the features you actually use can change the result.

Do not compare “AirPods” and “Pixel Buds” as if each were one product. Apple sells several AirPods designs, including open-fit and Pro-style in-ear models. Google’s current conversation includes Pixel Buds Pro 2 and the less expensive Pixel Buds 2a. Compare the exact model, case and feature set you would buy.

Why iPhone users usually start with AirPods

AirPods are designed around Apple hardware and software. The practical advantage is not simply that they make a Bluetooth connection; it is access to model-specific Apple features when the earbuds, phone, operating system, firmware, language and region meet Apple’s requirements. Apple’s comparison material explicitly warns that feature availability can depend on compatible devices, operating systems, firmware, region and language.

That makes AirPods Pro 3 the straightforward first model to investigate for an iPhone owner who wants the strongest current Apple integration and active noise cancellation. WIRED’s August 2026 guide names AirPods Pro 3 its iPhone pick and describes their noise cancellation and Apple integration positively. Treat those as reviewer judgments rather than a guarantee for every listener.

Why Android users usually start with Pixel Buds

Pixel Buds Pro 2 are the natural first comparison for an Android user who wants Google’s current premium option. WIRED’s August 2026 guide recommends them for Android and describes their ANC, comfort, battery performance and IP54 resistance favorably. Google maintains a current product page for the model, but exact specifications and feature availability should be checked on the live Google Store page for your country before purchase.

Pixel Buds 2a are the lower-cost Google option in the same guide. WIRED positions them as a pick for most people, highlighting their ANC and lower-price placement while noting that they do not support wireless charging. The price shown in a review is time-sensitive; confirm the current local price, included case and sale status at checkout.

What happens when you cross platforms?

AirPods are not restricted to Apple phones. Apple’s support guide states: “You can use AirPods as a Bluetooth® headset with a non-Apple device. You can’t use Siri, but you can listen and talk.” In other words, an Android phone can use AirPods for ordinary listening and calls, but successful pairing is not the same as full Apple integration. Apple also says functionality may be limited when AirPods are used with non-Apple devices.

For Pixel Buds used with an iPhone, do not assume that every Google feature will be available simply because a Bluetooth connection is possible. Check Google’s current support documentation and the exact model requirements for your region. If you regularly switch between iPhone, iPad, Mac, Pixel phones or other devices, list the devices you actually own before deciding; cross-device behavior can matter more than a small difference in specifications.

Fit is a first-order decision

Open fit versus silicone tips

An open-fit earbud rests at the ear opening without sealing the ear canal. That can feel less intrusive and lets more outside sound through, but it may be less stable for some ears and generally cannot isolate noise in the same way as a sealed design. The 2026 buying guide distinguishes the open design of AirPods 5 from Pro-style in-ear options.

Apple AirPods Pro 3 Wireless Earbuds with Active Noise Cancellation | Live Translation, Heart Rate Sensing, Hearing Aid Feature, Bluetooth Headphones, Spatial Audio, USB-C Charging
  • WORLD’S BEST IN-EAR ACTIVE NOISE CANCELLATION — Removes up to 2x more unwanted noise than AirPods Pro 2* so you can stay fully immersed in the moment.*
  • BREAKTHROUGH AUDIO PERFORMANCE — Experience breathtaking, three-dimensional audio with AirPods Pro 3. A new acoustic architecture delivers transformed bass, detailed clarity so you can hear every instrument, and stunningly vivid vocals.
  • HEART RATE SENSING — Built-in heart rate sensing lets you track your heart rate and calories burned for up to 50 different workout types.* With iPhone, you will have access to the Move ring, step count, and the new Workout Buddy,* powered by Apple Intelligence.*
  • LIVE TRANSLATION — Communicate across language barriers using Live Translation,* enabled by Apple Intelligence.*
  • EXTENDED BATTERY LIFE — Get up to 8 hours of listening time with Active Noise Cancellation on a single charge. Or up to 10 hours in Transparency using the Hearing Aid feature.*

In-ear earbuds use silicone tips to create a seal. A good seal can improve bass response and passive isolation and gives ANC a better acoustic starting point. A poor seal can feel uncomfortable, loosen during movement or make the noise cancellation seem ineffective. No brand has a universally best fit because ear canals differ.

A practical fit check

  1. Decide whether you tolerate silicone tips. If you dislike an in-ear seal, prioritize an open-fit model even if it gives up some isolation.
  2. Check the supplied tip sizes and test more than one size on each ear; left and right ears may need different sizes.
  3. Walk, speak and chew while wearing the earbuds. Movement and jaw motion reveal looseness that a short desk test can miss.
  4. Check whether the charging case closes with the tips installed and whether the case fits your pocket or bag.
  5. Buy from a seller with a return policy that allows an appropriate fit trial, subject to hygiene rules.

Noise cancellation: compare the exact model

Active noise cancellation is not a brand-wide feature. Some AirPods models are open-fit or lack the capabilities associated with the Pro line, while the models highlighted in the current comparison—AirPods Pro 3, Pixel Buds Pro 2 and Pixel Buds 2a—are discussed with ANC in the supplied 2026 guidance.

Use ANC according to your environment. Commuters and frequent flyers may value the reduction of steady low-frequency noise. At home, an open fit or transparency mode may be preferable when you need to hear people, alarms or traffic. ANC effectiveness also depends on the physical seal, so a comfortable tip that seals consistently can matter as much as the advertised feature.

WIRED describes AirPods Pro 3 as having strong ANC and Pixel Buds Pro 2 as offering ANC, but the material does not establish a controlled head-to-head measurement. Do not treat either description as proof that one family defeats the other in every setting.

Features depend on device, software and region

Apple’s comparison page lists compatibility conditions for AirPods features. Before paying for a feature, verify all of the following:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • The exact AirPods model and charging-case version.
  • Your iPhone, iPad, Mac or other Apple device model.
  • The operating-system version and earbud firmware requirement.
  • Your country or region and the language used for voice features.
  • Whether the feature works when the earbuds are paired to a non-Apple device.

Apple’s current pairing guide covers iOS 27, iPadOS 27, macOS 27, tvOS 27 and watchOS 27 or later. That does not mean every AirPods feature works on every device running those versions; it means you should use the current support documentation for the exact combination you own.

Google’s product pages are the appropriate place to verify Pixel Buds requirements and availability. The current product pages do not establish every model-specific specification in the material available here, so check the regional Google Store and support pages for precise compatibility, battery figures and feature access instead of relying on an old comparison article.

Battery, charging and durability claims

Read battery numbers with their test conditions

Battery life is affected by volume, ANC mode, calls, connectivity, temperature, device settings and other usage choices. Apple explicitly warns that battery life depends on settings, environment, usage and other factors. A manufacturer’s figure is therefore a test-condition claim, not a promise that every listener will receive the same runtime.

Apple reports that testing for AirPods 5 was conducted in July and August 2026 with pre-production earbuds and iPhone 18 Pro units using pre-release software. That date describes the test method; it is not a population statistic or a guarantee for retail hardware. The supplied material does not provide a directly comparable set of battery figures for the three highlighted models, so this comparison does not invent one.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Charging-case features

Check whether the specific case supports the charging method you use. WIRED’s guide notes that Pixel Buds 2a do not offer wireless charging. Do not transfer that limitation to Pixel Buds Pro 2 or to every AirPods model; verify the exact case in the current product listing.

Water and dust resistance

Resistance ratings are model-specific and describe tested conditions, not immunity from all water damage. WIRED describes Pixel Buds Pro 2 as having IP54 resistance. Confirm the rating for the exact AirPods or Pixel Buds model, and do not use a rating as permission for swimming, showering or submerging the earbuds unless the manufacturer explicitly allows it.

Price and availability are moving targets

Earbud prices change with sales, regional taxes, storage or color variants, retailer inventory and replacement-case bundles. A price printed in an August 2026 review should not be treated as an evergreen figure. Check the current local listing immediately before purchase and confirm what is in the box.

Decision paths for common buyers

You use an iPhone and want the least friction

Start with AirPods Pro 3 if you want an in-ear design and ANC, because WIRED’s August 2026 guide selects them for iPhone users. If you prefer an open fit, compare the appropriate non-Pro AirPods model instead of paying for Pro-style features you will not use. Confirm compatibility with your iPhone and the Apple features that matter to you.

You use Android and want a premium Google option

Start with Pixel Buds Pro 2. The current guide recommends them for Android and highlights ANC, comfort, battery and IP54 resistance. Check the live Google listing for your country, then verify your phone’s software and any app or account requirements.

You use Android and want to spend less

Investigate Pixel Buds 2a. WIRED recommends them for most people and notes ANC, lower-price positioning and the absence of wireless charging. Decide whether the charging limitation matters in your daily routine before treating the lower purchase price as a saving.

You switch between iPhone and Android

List the features you need on both phones. AirPods can provide listening and calls on Android, but Siri is unavailable and Apple documents limited functionality. For Pixel Buds, confirm the current iPhone support position for the exact model rather than assuming that Bluetooth pairing provides Google’s full feature set. A less feature-dependent workflow may be more reliable than choosing a premium model whose key functions work on only one of your phones.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You care most about comfort

Choose the design you can wear for several hours. Open-fit AirPods 5 may suit listeners who dislike silicone tips; Pro-style AirPods and Pixel Buds models may suit listeners who want a sealed fit and stronger isolation. The right answer is personal, so use the return-policy and fit-check steps rather than relying on a universal comfort claim.

How to pair AirPods with an Android phone

Apple’s official guidance supports AirPods as Bluetooth headphones on non-Apple devices. The menu names can vary by Android manufacturer, but the process is generally:

  1. Open the Android phone’s Settings and go to Connected devices, Bluetooth or the equivalent Bluetooth menu.
  2. Place both AirPods in their case and open the lid.
  3. Put the AirPods into pairing mode using the case control specified for your generation until the status light flashes.
  4. Select the AirPods name in the phone’s available-device list.
  5. Accept the pairing request and test music playback and a phone call.

If the earbuds connect but a feature is missing, that is expected for some Apple functions on non-Apple devices. Apple specifically says Siri cannot be used in this configuration.

Common mistakes and fixes

Buying by brand instead of model

Fix the mistake by writing down the exact model before comparing prices. ANC, fit, charging and water resistance cannot be safely inferred from the family name.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Assuming Bluetooth equals full compatibility

A Bluetooth connection confirms basic audio connectivity, not access to every assistant, device-switching, spatial-audio or health-related function. Check the manufacturer’s support page for your phone, operating-system version and region.

Choosing on a battery number alone

Compare the test mode and conditions, including whether ANC is enabled. Real runtime varies with volume, calls, temperature and settings.

Ignoring fit until after purchase

Decide between open and sealed designs first, then test the earbuds while moving. A poor seal can undermine both comfort and ANC.

Using an old price or specification

Recheck the live regional listing at purchase time. Product availability, discounts, bundled cases and specifications can change.

Final buying checklist

  • Identify your primary phone: iPhone or Android.
  • Choose open-fit or in-ear silicone-tip design.
  • Decide whether ANC is essential, useful or unnecessary.
  • Compare the exact models: AirPods Pro 3, another AirPods model, Pixel Buds Pro 2 or Pixel Buds 2a.
  • Verify operating-system, firmware, language and regional requirements.
  • Read battery claims with their test conditions.
  • Check charging-case capabilities, including wireless charging.
  • Confirm the model’s resistance rating and intended use.
  • Check current local price, stock, warranty and return terms.
  • If you use more than one phone platform, test the features you need on each one before committing.
