To make supported AirPods pause audio when you fall asleep, wear and connect them, then enable Pause Media When Falling Asleep in the AirPods settings. Apple lists AirPods 4 or later and AirPods Pro 2 or later as compatible.
Turn on sleep pausing on iPhone or iPad
- Put on your AirPods and connect them to your iPhone or iPad.
- Open Settings, then tap your AirPods near the top of the screen.
- Turn on Pause Media When Falling Asleep. If you do not see it, open Audio & Routing and look there.
Apple’s instructions cover listening to audio on iPhone or iPad; they do not specify a particular audio app or explain how sleep is detected. Apple Support
Enable it on Mac
- Wear your AirPods and connect them to your Mac.
- Open System Settings and select your AirPods in the sidebar.
- Turn on Pause Media When Falling Asleep. If it is not immediately visible, check Audio & Routing.
Enable it on Apple TV
- Connect your AirPods to Apple TV.
- Open Control Centre and select your AirPods.
- Turn on the option to pause media when falling asleep.
Why the sleep-pause option may be missing
- Check the model: Apple identifies AirPods 4 or later and AirPods Pro 2 or later as supporting this feature. If your model is outside those families, Apple does not list it as compatible.
- Connect and wear the AirPods: Apple advises wearing and connecting them before changing the setting.
- Look under Audio & Routing: The option may be nested there rather than shown on the main AirPods settings screen.
Sleep pausing is different from Automatic Ear Detection
Automatic Ear Detection responds to whether an AirPod is in your ear: playback pauses when you remove it and resumes when you put it back. Sleep pausing is a separate setting intended to pause media when you fall asleep. Changing Automatic Ear Detection does not enable sleep pausing.

Apple does not specify the sleep-detection method, how long detection takes, or whether behavior is identical in every third-party app. Its compatibility statement covers listening on iPhone, iPad, Mac, or Apple TV.
