There is no single best AirPods setup: the right settings depend on your model, software, listening environment, and preferences. Start by connecting and wearing your AirPods, then open Settings on your iPhone or iPad and tap your AirPods’ name. The controls you see vary by model and operating system; some may be under Audio & Routing.
Check which settings your AirPods support
AirPods features and labels vary across generations and software versions. Apple’s AirPods settings guide covers model-specific options, while its Adaptive Audio guide describes supported devices and controls. If an option below is missing, first check your AirPods model and that your Apple device is up to date; the absence of a control does not necessarily mean anything is wrong.
What AirPods settings should you change for better sound?
Personalize the tone with Custom EQ
On supported AirPods 4 or later, AirPods Pro 2 or later, and AirPods Max 2, Apple provides a three-band Custom EQ control. Use it to adjust the sound to your taste rather than aiming for a universal curve: the sources do not establish one EQ setting as best for everyone. Find it in your AirPods settings, or under Audio & Routing if that is where your device places it. See Apple’s settings guide for model-specific availability.

Try Headphone Accommodations for more tailored audio
Headphone Accommodations lets you customize audio using sample-based choices or manual tone and amplification controls. You can apply adjustments to Phone, Media, or both. Make small changes and compare them with your usual settings; on AirPods Pro, these adjustments may also change how your own voice and environmental sounds come through in Transparency mode. This is an audio accessibility feature, not a hearing diagnosis or substitute for professional hearing care. Apple explains the controls in its headphone audio levels guide.

Should you use Noise Cancellation, Transparency, or Adaptive Audio?
Choose a listening mode according to how much outside sound you want to hear and what you are doing. On iPhone or iPad, open Control Center, touch and hold the volume control, then select a listening mode. The available choices and Adaptive Audio controls depend on your model and operating system.
| Mode | What it does | When it may suit you |
|---|---|---|
| Noise Cancellation | Uses active noise cancellation to counter detected external sound. | When you want less surrounding noise. Apple says Noise Cancellation and Transparency work best on AirPods Pro when the earbuds fit well. |
| Transparency | Lets outside sound in so you can hear your surroundings. | When you want to remain aware of nearby people or activity. |
| Adaptive Audio | On supported models, blends Noise Cancellation and Transparency behavior as surroundings change. Its slider can allow more or less ambient sound. | When you want the AirPods to adjust between noise reduction and outside sound, with the amount of ambient sound tuned to your preference. |
These modes are trade-offs, not a safety ranking: choose the level of awareness that fits your surroundings. Apple’s listening modes guide and Adaptive Audio guide describe the controls and compatibility.

How do you help preserve AirPods battery health?
Look in Settings > your AirPods’ name > Battery for the model-appropriate charging control. Apple says Optimized Battery Charging reduces how long supported AirPods stay fully charged, with the aim of reducing battery wear over time. It is a battery-longevity feature—not a documented way to get more listening hours from the charge you have now. Apple does not quantify how much lifespan it saves.
For AirPods 3, AirPods 4, AirPods 5, and AirPods Pro, the control is called Optimized Battery Charging. AirPods Pro 3 instead uses Optimized Charge Limit, which adapts to daily usage and offers a full-charge override. Certain models also offer charging notifications for low-charge and full-charge alerts. Apple details availability in its AirPods charging guide.

How can you make your voice clearer on AirPods calls?
Try Voice Isolation in a noisy setting
For supported AirPods 4, AirPods Pro 2, and AirPods Pro 3 on supported Apple call platforms, turn on Voice Isolation during a call. On iPhone or iPad, open Control Center and use the call controls; on Mac, use Mic Mode from the menu bar. Apple says the feature can reduce background sounds such as wind for the person you are speaking with. It is conditional on model, software, platform, and app support, and does not guarantee a clear call in every environment. See Apple’s AirPods calls guide.
Choose which AirPod acts as the microphone
In your AirPods settings, the microphone option defaults to Automatically Switch AirPods. You can instead choose Always Left or Always Right to route microphone use to a particular earbud, including when the other one is removed or in its case. A fixed side can be useful for preference or troubleshooting, but Apple does not claim that it improves microphone fidelity. The setting is described in Apple’s AirPods settings guide.

When should you use Spatial Audio or Conversation Boost?
Spatial Audio is a presentation choice for supported content and devices, not a general-purpose equalizer. Its options include Off, Fixed, and Head Tracked; head tracking changes how sound follows your head movement. Try it with the apps and content you actually use, then keep the mode you prefer. On AirPods Pro, Headphone Accommodations can also customize Transparency and Conversation Boost to tune what you hear. Results are individual. Apple describes these options in its Headphone Accommodations guide and AirPods accessibility settings guide.
