AirPods Pro 3 is worth considering if you want Apple’s claimed stronger noise cancellation, workout heart-rate sensing, or a longer stated battery life. If your AirPods Pro 2 fit well and meet your needs, the upgrade is less compelling. Hearing Test and Hearing Aid are available on both generations, so those features alone are not a reason to switch.
What’s different between AirPods Pro 3 and AirPods Pro 2?
The most decision-relevant changes are noise cancellation, battery estimates, workout heart-rate sensing, and the redesigned fit. Apple also lists hearing features on both models, so check the individual feature details rather than assuming they are all new to Pro 3.
| Feature | AirPods Pro 3 | AirPods Pro 2 | What it means |
|---|---|---|---|
| Active noise cancellation | Apple says Pro 3 removes up to 2× more noise than the previous generation. This is Apple’s manufacturer claim, not an independent comparative measurement. | Serves as the previous-generation baseline in Apple’s claim. | Potentially meaningful if ANC is a priority, but the cited figure is not an independent test result. |
| Listening time on one charge | Up to 8 hours with ANC enabled, or up to 7.5 hours with Spatial Audio and head tracking, according to Apple’s specifications. | Up to 5 hours with ANC enabled, according to Apple’s comparison. | Apple’s published estimates favor Pro 3. Actual runtime varies with use, volume, and conditions. |
| Workout heart-rate sensing | Includes a heart-rate sensor for workouts. | Apple’s comparison identifies workout heart-rate sensing as a Pro 3 feature. | A practical upgrade reason if you want heart-rate data from your earbuds during workouts. |
| Hearing features | Apple lists Hearing Test, Hearing Aid, Hearing Protection, and automatic Conversation Boost while using Hearing Aid. | Apple lists Hearing Test and Hearing Aid for Pro 2 as well. | Hearing Test and Hearing Aid are not exclusive to Pro 3. The automatic Conversation Boost detail is a Pro 3 improvement announced by Apple. |
| Fit and ear tips | Five silicone tip sizes: XXS, XS, S, M, and L. Apple says the updated design improves fit and stability. | Earlier design. | More tip choices may help some listeners, but fit and comfort are individual. |
| Dust, sweat, and water resistance; charging | Apple lists Pro 3 and its case as IP57 rated; the case supports MagSafe, Apple Watch charger, Qi, and USB-C. | Not fully restated for a like-for-like comparison in Apple’s cited materials. | These Pro 3 specifications do not establish a Pro 2 disadvantage without checking the exact Pro 2 variant. |
How much better is Pro 3’s noise cancellation?
Apple says AirPods Pro 3 removes up to 2× more noise than the previous-generation AirPods Pro. That is a manufacturer comparison claim, not an independent measurement, so treat it as Apple’s stated performance rather than a guarantee of a particular improvement in your own listening.

Apple’s September 9, 2025 announcement described Pro 3 as having “the world’s best ANC of any in-ear wireless headphones.” That superlative is also Apple’s claim. Apple’s footnote says its Pro 3 testing took place in July 2025 with AirPods Pro 3 paired with an iPhone 16, prerelease firmware, and iOS 26; it does not substitute for independent testing.

How much longer does Pro 3 battery life last?
Apple rates Pro 3 for up to 8 hours of listening on a single charge with ANC enabled, or up to 7.5 hours with Spatial Audio and head tracking. Apple’s comparison lists Pro 2 at up to 5 hours with ANC enabled. These are estimates under the stated conditions; they are not promises of the same runtime for every listener or usage pattern.
The figures point to a longer single-charge estimate for Pro 3. Consider whether your Pro 2’s current runtime is actually limiting you: if you regularly run out of charge before you can recharge, the difference may matter more than it would for shorter listening sessions.

Will Pro 3 fit better than Pro 2?
Pro 3 comes with five silicone tip sizes—XXS, XS, S, M, and L—and Apple says its updated design improves fit and stability. That may make it a better match for some ears, but neither a redesigned shape nor extra tip sizes can predict an individual listener’s comfort.
If fit is your main reason to upgrade, try Pro 3 before committing when possible. A design that feels more secure to one person may not feel better to another.

Should you upgrade from AirPods Pro 2 to Pro 3?
Base the decision on the features you will use and the current local price—not on a universal upgrade threshold. Apple’s official product information does not establish a current transaction price or a single price at which the upgrade is worthwhile. Compare the live price of Pro 3 with the condition and remaining value of your Pro 2.
Pro 3 is worth considering if
- You want workout heart-rate sensing in your earbuds.
- You value Apple’s stated ANC improvement and understand it is a manufacturer claim, not an independent test result.
- Your Pro 2 battery life is no longer enough and Pro 3’s longer stated single-charge estimates suit your listening pattern.
- You are unhappy with your Pro 2 fit and can confirm that Pro 3’s shape and tips work better for you.
- You specifically want Pro 3’s automatic Conversation Boost while using Hearing Aid.
Keep Pro 2 if
- It fits comfortably, its battery lasts long enough, and its sound and noise cancellation meet your needs.
- You would not use workout heart-rate sensing or another Pro 3-specific change.
- The current local price does not make the improvements worthwhile to you.
- You are considering the switch only for Hearing Test or Hearing Aid, which Apple lists for both generations.
