AirPods Pro 3 is the better-equipped choice for most new buyers: Apple says it offers stronger noise cancellation, it adds workout heart-rate sensing, has an IP57 resistance rating, and is rated for more listening time per charge. AirPods Pro 2 can be the better value if you find it substantially discounted, already know its fit works for you, or put a premium on longer total listening time with the case.
AirPods Pro 3 vs. Pro 2: the main differences

How much better is Pro 3’s noise cancellation?
Apple’s current product page says Pro 3 “removes up to 2x more unwanted noise than AirPods Pro 2.” Its comparison-page footnote gives the more specific previous-generation figure: up to 1.5x more active noise cancellation when tested in accordance with IEC 60268-24. Keep the “up to” and test-standard qualifications in mind: these are Apple’s claims, not a guarantee that every person will hear a twofold improvement in every setting. Apple attributes the design to a multiport acoustic architecture, an upgraded acoustic seal, and ultra-low-noise microphones; both generations use the H2 chip. In a comparison published January 16, 2026, What Hi-Fi? reviewers reported stronger cancellation of low- and mid-frequency noise with Pro 3, along with clearer, more spacious, and more powerful sound. Those are the reviewers’ listening impressions, not laboratory measurements or a guarantee of what every listener will experience. They also found both models enjoyable. Battery: longer per charge, shorter with the case
Apple rates Pro 3 for up to 8 hours of listening with ANC enabled on a charge, compared with up to 6 hours for Pro 2. But the case changes the comparison: Apple lists up to 24 hours for Pro 3 with its case and up to 30 hours for Pro 2 with its case. Choose Pro 3 if fewer interruptions between charges matter most; Pro 2 has the higher stated case-inclusive total. Fit, ear tips, and charging case
Pro 3 comes with five silicone tip sizes—XXS, XS, S, M, and L—while What Hi-Fi? reports four sizes for Pro 2. The comparison also describes changes to Pro 3’s shape and tips. Its reviewers found more than one size secure for them, but that does not establish a universal comfort advantage; some listeners may prefer Pro 2’s fit.

Try the included sizes and use Apple’s fit test rather than assuming the newer shape will suit you. If you need replacement tips, confirm compatibility with your exact AirPods generation: the available information does not establish that Pro 2 and Pro 3 tips are interchangeable. Pro 3 adds workout heart-rate sensing
Pro 3 includes a built-in heart-rate monitor for workouts with Fitness and compatible third-party iPhone apps running iOS 26 or later. If tracking heart rate during workouts is useful to you, this is a practical reason to choose Pro 3; it is not listed as a Pro 2 feature. Apple’s comparison and footnotes.

Live Translation is not exclusive to Pro 3
Apple lists Live Translation for both generations. It requires compatible Apple devices and current software, with Apple Intelligence enabled; supported languages and regional availability can vary. It should not be treated as a Pro 3-only upgrade. Durability: IP57 versus IP54
Apple specifies IP57 dust, sweat, and water resistance for Pro 3 and its case, compared with IP54 for Pro 2. Neither model is waterproof. Apple cautions that resistance can decline with normal wear, describes the earbuds as intended for non-water sports and exercise, and says not to charge them when wet. Price and which model to buy
Apple’s US-facing product page lists Pro 3 at US$249; this is the current listed US price, not a statement of prices in other countries. - You want Apple’s newer Pro earbuds and value the added workout heart-rate sensor.
- You want the higher IP rating or more estimated listening time per charge.
- Apple’s noise-cancellation claim and reviewers’ reported listening improvements matter to you, while recognizing the claim is qualified and listening results vary.
- Pro 2 is only slightly cheaper where you shop.
Choose discounted Pro 2 if…
- You find a meaningful discount and do not need Pro 3’s workout sensor or IP57 rating.
- You already know Pro 2 fits comfortably, or its fit suits you better.
- You prefer its higher Apple-estimated case-inclusive listening time.
When comparing Pro 2 listings, check whether the case is USB-C or an older Lightning version, and verify the seller and exact product variant. If you already own a working Pro 2, weigh the specific Pro 3 features you would use against the value of keeping your current pair; the listed differences do not by themselves make replacement necessary.
