To check your AirPods battery, open the case lid or take the earbuds out, keep them near your iPhone or iPad, then go to Settings > Bluetooth and tap the Info button beside your AirPods. On a Mac, open the case or remove the earbuds, then choose Control Center > Sound and select your AirPods. The case light can also show charge, but what it reports depends on whether the earbuds are inside.

Open the AirPods case lid, or take the AirPods out of the case.

Hold the AirPods close to your iPhone or iPad.

Open Settings > Bluetooth, then tap the Info button next to your AirPods. The charge information appears for the connected AirPods.

Apple also documents checking the battery through the AirPods entry in Settings or by adding a Batteries widget. The exact labels and available options may vary with software version; see Apple’s AirPods user guide if the menu differs on your device.

Check AirPods battery on a Mac

Open the case lid or remove the AirPods from the case, and keep them near your Mac.

Open Control Center > Sound.

Select your AirPods to view their charge information.

Green means fully charged. Amber means less than one full charge remains; it is not a precise percentage. The light’s location varies by case generation: newer cases commonly have it on the front, while the Lightning case for first- or second-generation AirPods places it inside. In some charging situations, the light appears only briefly. Apple’s full explanation is in Charge your AirPods.
Understand low-battery alerts
Apple says AirPods can notify you when charge reaches 20%, 10%, and 5%. A low-charge tone sounds at 10% and again shortly before the AirPods shut down. These are low-charge alerts, not a long-term battery-health measurement.

Charge the case using its supported method
AirPods charge while stored in their case. The right cable or charging method depends on the case model: check its connector before choosing a cable, and confirm that the specific case supports wireless charging before using a wireless charger. Apple lists Qi charging for eligible cases and Apple Watch charging for specified case models; wireless charging is not supported by every case. Model-specific details are in Apple’s charging instructions and AirPods user guide.
If no status light appears, Apple says the AirPods may need charging. For troubleshooting, follow Apple’s charging guidance. A displayed charge percentage shows current charge; it does not by itself establish the battery’s long-term condition or whether it needs replacement. For model-specific service questions, use Apple AirPods Support.
