To block outside sound, set compatible AirPods to Noise Cancellation. If you want the AirPods to adjust automatically, use Adaptive Audio and move its control toward Noise Cancellation so it allows less ambient sound. Which options you see depends on your AirPods model.
Which AirPods setting cancels background noise?
Noise Cancellation is the direct choice when you want to hear less of your surroundings. Apple says this mode blocks external sounds; it does not guarantee that every sound will disappear in every environment. Apple does not provide a universal decibel-reduction figure for this setting. How to turn on Noise Cancellation or tune Adaptive Audio
Wear your AirPods and make sure they are connected to your iPhone or iPad. Menu labels can vary with software versions.

- Adjust Adaptive Audio, if supported: Open Settings, tap your AirPods name, then tap Adaptive under Listening Mode. Move the slider toward Noise Cancellation to allow less ambient noise. Conversation Boost and customized Transparency are separate accessibility-related controls on supported AirPods Pro configurations. They are intended to help focus on conversation or tune ambient sound, not to replace ordinary Noise Cancellation. Apple describes these options in its hearing accessibility guide.
Check whether your AirPods support the setting
Apple’s current listening-mode guide lists Noise Cancellation for AirPods 4 (ANC), AirPods 5, AirPods Pro, and AirPods Max. It lists Adaptive Audio for AirPods 4 (ANC), AirPods 5, AirPods Pro 2, AirPods Pro 3, and AirPods Max 2. Conversation Awareness is listed for AirPods 4 (ANC), AirPods 5, AirPods Pro 2, AirPods Pro 3, and AirPods Max 2. Check the exact model in Apple’s compatibility information; not every AirPods pair includes all three features.

If the noise still bothers you
- Confirm the selected mode in Control Center rather than assuming the AirPods are still using your preferred setting.
- If you chose Adaptive, move its slider toward Noise Cancellation to reduce how much ambient sound it allows.
- If Noise Cancellation or Adaptive is missing, check your exact model’s feature support; the available modes differ across generations.
- If you need to hear people or environmental cues, consider Transparency or an appropriate conversation accessibility feature instead of maximizing cancellation.
Noise conditions vary, and the documented feature descriptions do not establish how much sound will be reduced in a particular setting. Treat the mode as a way to manage outside sound, not a promise of silence.
