Choose AirPods 5 if you want an open-ear fit without silicone tips; choose AirPods Pro 3 if you prefer a sealed in-ear fit and want Apple’s stronger claimed noise cancellation, workout heart-rate sensing, and other Pro features. This is a specification-based comparison, not a report of hands-on testing. Apple’s U.S. launch prices were $129 for AirPods 5, $149 for AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case, and $249 for AirPods Pro 3; those are launch prices, not verified current prices.

Which fit should you choose?
Choose AirPods 5 for an open-ear design
AirPods 5 is designed to sit in the ear without silicone tips sealing the ear canal. That makes it the straightforward option if you dislike in-ear tips or prefer an open-ear style. Apple includes ANC on AirPods 5, but its open-ear design is not the same as the sealed fit of Pro 3.

AirPods Pro 3 uses silicone tips and comes with five tip sizes. The sealed fit is central to the Pro model’s design and noise control. A different tip size may change how secure or comfortable the earbuds feel, but specifications cannot predict the right fit for a particular person.

How different is noise cancellation?
Apple says AirPods Pro 3 offers up to three times more Active Noise Cancellation than AirPods 5 on its comparison page. That is Apple’s published comparison, not an independent measurement in this article. If maximum noise reduction is a priority and you are comfortable with silicone tips, Pro 3 is the stronger specification-based choice.
AirPods 5 does have ANC despite its open-ear design. Apple separately says it removes up to 50 percent more external noise than AirPods 4 with ANC. That claim compares AirPods 5 with AirPods 4—not with Pro 3—and should not be read as evidence that AirPods 5 cancels more noise than Pro 3. Apple introduced AirPods 5 as its most affordable AirPods with ANC in its September 9, 2026 announcement.

Battery life: compare the same conditions
For the AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case, Apple lists up to five hours per charge and up to 22 hours total with the case when ANC is enabled. For AirPods Pro 3, Apple lists up to eight hours per charge and up to 24 hours with the case under the comparison’s ANC-on conditions. These are “up to” estimates, and actual use can vary; consult Apple’s comparison notes for the test conditions rather than treating the figures as guaranteed daily runtime.

What does the extra cost buy?
At launch in the U.S., Pro 3 cost $100 more than AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case and $120 more than standard AirPods 5. In return, Apple’s comparison lists a sealed fit, higher claimed ANC, heart-rate sensing during workouts, and IP57 dust, sweat, and water resistance. Whether those extras justify the difference depends chiefly on your fit preference and whether you will use the workout and noise-control features.
The $129 AirPods 5 and $149 wireless-case version should not be treated as identical bundles: Apple lists Apple Watch and Qi charging support for the wireless case, while the $129 model is the standard version. The AirPods 5 store availability announcement was for September 18, 2026. AirPods Pro 3 was announced in 2025. Check Apple’s current U.S. store or a retailer for today’s price and availability.

Which one should you buy?
- Buy AirPods 5 if you want an open-ear design, do not want silicone tips, and would rather pay its lower launch price.
- Buy AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case if you want that same open-ear design plus Apple Watch or Qi case charging.
- Buy AirPods Pro 3 if you are comfortable with an in-ear seal and value Apple’s higher claimed ANC, workout heart-rate sensing, or the Pro feature set.
Neither the published fit details nor the maximum battery numbers establish which model will be comfortable or last longer in your routine. The distinction most likely to determine your choice is open-ear versus sealed in-ear; treat the remaining feature differences as reasons to pay more only if they matter to you.
