AirPods 5 are a reasonable open-fit choice if you want active noise cancellation (ANC) without silicone ear tips, but the evidence here does not establish them as the best midrange AirPods or validate the publisher’s own lab testing. Tom’s Guide found only a slight ANC advantage over AirPods 4 with ANC, while Apple’s battery figures are manufacturer estimates from specified tests—not independent ANC measurements.
What the AirPods 5 comparison actually shows
Apple’s current comparison page lists AirPods 5 in standard and Wireless Charging Case configurations, alongside AirPods 4 with ANC and AirPods Pro models. That makes AirPods 4 with ANC the closest open-fit comparison and AirPods Pro 3 a higher-tier alternative; Apple’s lineup can change over time. Apple’s AirPods comparison
In Tom’s Guide’s direct comparison, AirPods 5 scored 13/20 for ANC and AirPods 4 with ANC scored 12/20. Those are the publication’s review scores, not standardized laboratory measurements, and its reviewer described the advantage as slight. Tom’s Guide also judged neither model groundbreaking for ANC and recommended silicone-tip earbuds for stronger isolation. Tom’s Guide’s comparison

A broader “best” verdict would require a defined competitor set and disclosed test method.

Why open-fit ANC has a limit
AirPods 5 do not use silicone ear tips to seal the ear canal. ANC and passive isolation are different: ANC electronically reduces some external sound, while a physical seal blocks sound from entering in the first place. With an open fit, sounds can remain audible even when ANC is on.
T3’s reviewer observed that the AirPods 5’s open design limits passive isolation and that announcements and some higher-frequency sounds may still be heard with ANC enabled. That is a reviewer observation, not a universal measurement, but it points to the practical trade-off: the fit avoids silicone tips, while offering less physical sound blocking than a sealed design. AirPods 5 and AirPods 4 ANC: the useful differences
| Factor | AirPods 5 | AirPods 4 with ANC |
|---|---|---|
| Fit and isolation | Open-fit; no silicone ear-tip seal. T3 reports that announcements and some higher-frequency sounds may remain audible with ANC enabled. T3 review | Open-fit comparison model; stronger isolation from a silicone-tip seal is not established for this model. Tom’s Guide recommends silicone-tip earbuds for stronger isolation. | Apple’s stated listening time with Noise Control off | Up to 6 hours for the configuration described in Apple’s comparison footnote; up to 7 hours with Wireless Charging Case. Apple says its 2026 test used preproduction AirPods 5 and preproduction iPhone 18 Pro units with prerelease software in July and August. Apple comparison | Up to 4 hours of ANC-on listening in Apple’s 2024 test footnote. This is not the same condition as the AirPods 5 Noise Control off figures. Apple comparison |

Do not read the battery figures as a controlled head-to-head result: Apple’s AirPods 5 numbers are for listening with Noise Control off, whereas its AirPods 4 ANC figure is for ANC-on listening. The test years and conditions differ as well. Apple’s 2026 footnote states: “Testing conducted by Apple in July and August 2026 using preproduction AirPods 5 paired with preproduction iPhone 18 Pro units, all with prerelease software.” Apple comparison and test footnotes
Which model should you choose?
Choose AirPods 5 if you want open-fit ANC
They are worth considering if you prefer earbuds without silicone tips and want ANC in that style. The reviewer comparison gives AirPods 5 a slight edge over AirPods 4 ANC, but do not expect the kind of passive isolation a sealed ear tip can provide.

Consider AirPods 4 with ANC if it better fits your priorities
They are the direct open-fit alternative. The available reviewer comparison places them just behind AirPods 5 for ANC, not in a wholly different performance class. Apple’s published AirPods 4 ANC battery figure uses ANC-on conditions, so compare it only with figures measured under the same mode and test conditions.
Look at AirPods Pro 3 if isolation matters most
AirPods Pro 3 are a relevant higher-tier alternative in Apple’s current lineup. If your priority is reducing outside sound, the key distinction is a silicone-tip seal versus an open fit—not simply which model has the newer number. The cited sources do not establish a direct ANC score comparison between AirPods Pro 3 and AirPods 5.
