AirPods 5 make one meaningful repairability improvement: in iFixit’s teardown, the earbud batteries unplug through pronged contacts instead of tiny soldered leads, and the shells opened more cleanly than earlier models. But opening a glued earbud is still delicate, the charging-case battery remained destructive to reach, and iFixit scored the product just 2 out of 10. This is evidence of improved access—not proof that battery replacement is an easy or reliable home repair.
What changed in the AirPods 5 battery design?
In its September 29, 2026 teardown, iFixit found that each AirPods 5 earbud battery connects with pronged contacts that can be unplugged after the shell is opened. That is a more serviceable connection than tiny soldered leads.
The connector alone is not the whole story. iFixit had previously seen pronged batteries in AirPods 3, but said accessing them often meant deforming or cutting the plastic. With AirPods 5, it located a small seam and found that the shell opened more cleanly around the driver. Once inside, it removed glue strips along the battery’s sides and lifted the battery out. Does that make an AirPods 5 battery replacement easy?
No. The teardown shows that the battery can be disconnected once the earbud is open; it does not establish a simple, low-risk consumer repair. The earbuds are glued shut, and opening them without damaging the shell or internal parts takes care. iFixit used careful heating and patient prying. Its account says a low-heat hair dryer and clamp worked in its teardown attempts, but an earlier stem-opening attempt melted plastic.

That makes the improvement most relevant to skilled technicians or experienced DIYers willing to accept the risk of damage. It is not an official Apple procedure or a guarantee that a battery replacement will succeed.
Can you swap the left and right AirPods 5 batteries?
No. iFixit tried moving the left battery to the right earbud and found reversed polarity and prongs that sat slightly off-center. The batteries are not interchangeable, so a replacement would need to match the side it is intended for. In its September 29, 2026 article, iFixit said replacement batteries were not yet available; that statement reflects availability at the time of publication, not a guarantee about later stock.

Is the charging case repairable?
The case did not get the same improvement as the earbuds. iFixit describes tight seams and plastic welds rather than screws. In its attempt to reach the case battery, the case was destroyed. The teardown therefore supports a narrow claim about better access to the earbud batteries, not a general claim that AirPods 5 are repairable.
How does AirPods 5’s repairability compare with older models?
iFixit gave AirPods 5 a repairability score of 2 out of 10, its highest AirPods score. The same article says AirPods earbuds had received 0 out of 10 for the preceding ten years. Those figures are iFixit’s scorecard judgments, not an industry-wide certification or a uniform side-by-side test of every generation. The specific improvement iFixit describes is better access to the earbud battery connection; the case remains a major obstacle.

What are the practical service options?
Apple says customers can start troubleshooting or arrange in-person service at an Apple Store or Authorized Service Provider, or use mail service. Options vary by location and parts availability. Apple’s one-year limited warranty covers manufacturing issues, but not accidental damage or batteries that wear down through normal use; fees may apply when coverage does not apply. Apple’s AirPods service and repair page says AppleCare battery service is available at no extra charge when capacity drops below 80%. That information does not establish that Apple replaces an individual AirPods 5 battery cell.
iFixit reported that Apple had no repair manual or Self Service Repair path for AirPods 5 at the time of its teardown. For people choosing earbuds by repairability, iFixit points to Fairphone Fairbuds as an example designed to prioritize battery replacement in both earbuds and the case. That is a design contrast, not a head-to-head test.
