A few AirPods 4 settings can make listening, calls, and everyday use work better—but the options depend on which model you own. AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) adds Adaptive Audio, Transparency, and Conversation Awareness; the standard AirPods 4 does not. Start by identifying your model, then adjust the settings that fit how you listen.
First, check which AirPods 4 model you have
Standard AirPods 4 and AirPods 4 with ANC share some personalization and call features, but ANC-only listening controls are not available on the standard model. Apple lists ANC, Adaptive Audio, Transparency, and Conversation Awareness for AirPods 4 with ANC. Apple’s AirPods 4 specifications and AirPods user guide describe the model-specific options.
- AirPods 4 with ANC: Offers ANC, Adaptive Audio, Transparency, and Conversation Awareness.
- Standard AirPods 4: Does not include those ANC listening modes. Personalized Volume is available on AirPods 4.
Settings labels and locations can differ by operating-system version. Connect and wear your AirPods before looking for model-specific controls.
Choose the right listening mode for your surroundings
These listening-mode options apply to AirPods 4 with ANC. From your iPhone or iPad, open Control Center, touch and hold the volume control, then select a Listening Mode.

Use ANC for steady background noise
Active Noise Cancellation is useful when you want less outside sound reaching you. Compare it with other modes in the places where you usually listen; the best choice depends on whether you need quiet or awareness of what is around you.
Use Transparency when you need to hear your surroundings
Transparency lets outside sound through, which can be preferable when you need to remain aware of nearby people or activity.
Adjust Adaptive Audio to split the difference
Adaptive Audio blends ANC and Transparency behavior as noise conditions change. To tune how much ambient sound it allows, open your connected AirPods settings, choose Adaptive, and move the slider. Use a setting that reduces distracting noise without blocking more of your surroundings than you want. For a steadier environment, compare Adaptive with ANC; when awareness matters, compare it with Transparency. Apple’s AirPods guide covers the listening modes and Adaptive Audio control.

Decide whether automatic volume features help
Automatic adjustments can save you from changing volume yourself, but they may not suit every listening habit. Personalized Volume is available on AirPods 4 and adjusts media volume based on your surroundings and learned volume preferences. Find it in the settings for your connected AirPods; depending on your software, it may appear under Audio & Routing. Turn it on if you want volume to adapt, or leave it off if you prefer to set volume manually.
Try Conversation Awareness if you often speak while listening
Conversation Awareness is available on AirPods 4 with ANC. When you start speaking, it lowers media volume and enhances voices in front of you; when the conversation ends, it restores the previous volume and listening mode. You can turn it on in connected AirPods settings or from the Control Center volume panel. Press and hold the AirPods stem to end the response manually.
This can be convenient for brief exchanges, but it may interrupt spoken audio: Apple notes that media such as podcasts can pause after a few seconds while you are talking. If that gets in the way, turn Conversation Awareness off and adjust volume yourself.

Personalize sound without assuming one setting is best
AirPods 4 or later can use a three-band Custom EQ on iPhone, iPad, or Mac. Headphone Accommodations also offers choices such as Balanced Tone, Vocal Range (which boosts middle frequencies), Brightness (which boosts high frequencies), and a slider for boosting softer audio. These controls let you tailor playback, but no one EQ curve is best for everyone.

Use Voice Isolation to improve AirPods call quality
Voice Isolation is a call-time microphone mode, separate from ANC and listening modes. On supported calls with AirPods 4 and an iPhone, iPad, or Mac, it can reduce background noise—including wind—for the person on the other end of the call.

- On iPhone or iPad: During the call, open Control Center, select the call controls or FaceTime Controls, and choose Voice Isolation.
- On Mac: During the call, open the call’s microphone or video menu, choose Mic Mode, and select Voice Isolation.
The wording and location can vary with the app and operating system. Apple’s Voice Isolation guidance has more information. AirPods 4 stem controls also let you press once to answer or mute and unmute, and twice to end a call, according to Apple’s specifications.

Apple’s model-specific estimates show a listening-time tradeoff for AirPods 4 with ANC. Its figures below are “up to” estimates from testing in July and August 2024 with pre-production AirPods 4 and iPhone 16 Pro Max units and pre-release software—not a guarantee of everyday runtime.

Apple says battery life depends on device settings, environment, usage, and other factors. If you do not need ANC or Spatial Audio, turning them off is a reasonable way to favor longer listening time, but Apple’s estimates do not establish how much switching off any single feature will add for you. Other settings to check when troubleshooting
Some settings help resolve a specific preference or problem rather than improve sound or battery life across the board. If an AirPod’s microphone is not behaving as expected, check whether microphone selection is set to Automatic, Always Left, or Always Right. If playback behaves unexpectedly, review Automatic Ear Detection, press-and-hold actions, and the option to pause media when you fall asleep on supported products. Choose between AirPods 4 and AirPods 4 with ANC
Whether the ANC model is right for you depends on the controls you will use, not on an established sound-quality winner. Apple’s cited specifications and guides do not quantify fit quality or provide an independent listening comparison, so your fit and sound preferences are best judged by trying them yourself.
