Spirit Airlines’ shutdown could put upward pressure on fares on routes where it was a meaningful competitor, but the available national fare data cannot show that it caused a nationwide spike. The latest annual figures cover 2025, before Spirit ceased operations on May 2, 2026: the inflation-adjusted annual average domestic itinerary fare fell from 2024, although the average rose between the third and fourth quarters of 2025.
What the latest national fare figures show
The Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) reported an inflation-adjusted average domestic itinerary fare of $387 for 2025, down 1.8% from $394 in 2024. Those annual figures do not include any period after Spirit stopped flying. BTS also reported a late-year increase: the inflation-adjusted average was $405 in Q4 2025, up 9.2% from $370 in Q3. Q4 2025 was still 1.0% below Q4 2024 after inflation adjustment. These comparisons describe different periods, so a lower annual average and a higher Q4 average are not contradictory. The annual average also spans a change in BTS’s ticket data collection: it uses a 10% ticket sample through June 2025 and a 40% sample from July onward. That shift is worth bearing in mind when interpreting fine-grained comparisons across those months. The annual figure is a national historical measure, not a live quote or a prediction for an individual trip.

Spirit ceased operations on May 2, 2026. In its SEC-filed announcement, the company said all flights were cancelled and cited financial pressures, including a sudden, sustained rise in fuel prices, after restructuring efforts and a lack of additional funding. CEO Dave Davis said the fuel-price increase “ultimately has left us with no alternative but to pursue an orderly wind-down of the Company.” Spirit’s SEC-filed shutdown announcement

Those were Spirit’s stated reasons for closing. They do not, by themselves, establish how much the shutdown changed other airlines’ prices.
Why Spirit’s exit could affect some fares
When an airline disappears, remaining carriers may face less direct pressure to keep prices low on routes where they competed. The GAO describes the general mechanism: “Robust competition in the airline industry can promote lower fares and give consumers more travel options and destinations.” GAO’s report on airline competition

The effect is most plausible on routes where Spirit was a significant alternative, but it need not be uniform. The number of remaining carriers, available seats, schedules, airport options, demand, fuel costs, and seasonality can all matter. A national average can conceal changes on particular routes, while a fare change on one route cannot establish a national trend.
The sources cited here do not measure a post-shutdown fare effect, nationally or route by route. BTS’s cited release ends at Q4 2025, before the closure. A causal estimate would need comparable post-May 2026 fare and capacity data, with routes that had meaningful Spirit competition compared against suitable routes without it, while accounting for other factors.

What the fare measures include
BTS average itinerary fares
BTS’s ticket value includes fees required by the carrier to board and taxes or fees charged by outside entities at purchase. It excludes optional purchases such as baggage and seat-selection upgrades. As a result, it is not the same as the total many travelers pay, nor is it a direct measure of every fare available for a particular trip. BTS’s explanation of its 2025 fare data
BLS airfare index
The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) airfare index is a different measure. Its method uses standardized monthly trip quotes, primarily discount fares, and includes applicable taxes and a sample of first checked-bag charges. It tracks price changes for that defined sample; it is not a live ticket search or a direct estimate of Spirit’s effect on a route. BLS’s airline fares methodology

DOT market and carrier reports
The Department of Transportation’s Domestic Airfare Consumer Report provides quarterly market and carrier averages for historical comparisons. DOT cautions that airline prices fluctuate and that reported averages may not match current tickets. How to tell whether your own route got more expensive
Use current fare searches to compare actual available tickets; historical government averages cannot tell you what a seat costs today. For a useful before-and-after comparison, keep the trip as similar as possible:

- Compare the same origin and destination airports, not just the same cities.
- Use the same travel dates, or dates with similar demand and seasonality.
- Match nonstop and connecting itineraries, including the number and length of stops.
- Compare the same ticket restrictions and include required fees, then add optional baggage or seat charges you expect to pay.
- Check whether the comparison is before or after May 2, 2026, and whether Spirit operated as a meaningful competitor on that route.
DOT reports can help with historical market or carrier comparisons, but they are not a substitute for checking current fares. In the immediate aftermath of the shutdown, DOT said carriers offered temporary rebooking caps and other fare measures, including on overlapping routes. Those offers had limited availability windows; they should not be treated as current deals or proof that fares were prevented from rising.
