For a nearby transfer between Apple devices, AirDrop is the safest choice for preserving the original photo when you open Share > Options in Photos and enable All Photos Data. It can send the original file with its edit history and metadata.
Google Photos can retain the taken resolution when backup quality is set to Original quality, but backup storage and sharing are separate operations. Messaging apps are the least predictable: HD modes improve results, yet normal image attachments are often compressed. When exact fidelity matters, send the image as a file or document if the app supports that route, then inspect the received copy.
What “photo quality” actually includes
People often use “quality” to mean sharpness, but a transfer can change several independent properties:

- Compression and file size: a service can re-encode a JPEG or convert a high-efficiency format even when the picture still looks acceptable on a phone.
- Metadata: date, time, location, device, captions and other embedded information.
- Edit history: information that allows a recipient to view or modify the current version of an edited photo.
- Format compatibility: a recipient may receive a still image instead of a Live Photo, or a converted format, when the destination does not support the original.
An image can look equally sharp while losing metadata, edit history or its original encoding. Conversely, a technically original file may look different in an app that renders it with a different color profile or converts it for display. Decide whether you need the exact file, the same visible pixels, or simply a convenient way for people to view and save a copy.

The practical ranking is therefore conditional rather than universal: AirDrop is the clearest fidelity choice for nearby Apple transfers; Google Photos is the most useful cloud workflow when its backup setting and sharing path are understood; messaging is the most convenient but needs the most checking.
Does AirDrop reduce photo quality?
AirDrop does not have to reduce the original photo. Apple’s iPhone guide says that turning on All Photos Data sends the original file with edit history and metadata, and that the recipient can view and modify the current version. Apple documents this control as available with AirDrop only.
Send the original from the iPhone Photos app
- Open Photos and select one or more images or videos.
- Tap Share, then tap Options at the top of the share sheet.
- Turn on All Photos Data. This is the setting that includes the original file, edit history and metadata.
- Review the available file-format choice when it matters to the recipient. A format that the receiving device cannot open may be converted or displayed differently.
- Return to the share sheet, choose the nearby AirDrop recipient and have the recipient accept the transfer.
- On the receiving device, open the saved item and inspect its dimensions, format and metadata before deleting the source.
Without All Photos Data, the share sheet can use a rendered or otherwise simplified version of the item. That may be perfectly adequate for a social post, but it is not the setting to use when you need the source file and its editing information.
AirDrop’s limits
- It is designed for nearby Apple devices, so it is not a general solution for sending to an Android phone or a remote contact.
- Apple notes that photo sharing can include date, time, location, device and caption metadata. Check the options before sending if revealing location or other embedded data would be a privacy problem.
- Unsupported destinations may receive a Live Photo as a still image.
- Apple says attachment-size limits depend on the service provider. If you are using a share extension or another service after AirDrop, that service’s limit applies.
For a photographer handing an original to another Apple user, the important action is not merely choosing AirDrop; it is enabling All Photos Data and then verifying the received file.

Does Google Photos compress photos when you share them?
Google Photos has two different questions that are easy to conflate: how the service stores a backed-up item, and how a recipient receives a shared item. The backup-quality setting answers the first question. An album, conversation or link answers the second.
Choose Original quality for the backup
In the Google Photos app, open your profile picture, choose Photos settings, open Backup and select the Backup quality control. Choose Original quality when retaining the taken resolution in the cloud library is important. Google Photos Help describes this setting by saying: “Photos and videos are stored in the same resolution that you took them in with no change to their quality.” That statement applies to items backed up using Original quality; it is not a blanket promise about every later share, preview or download path.
Google’s Storage saver option can compress photos, resize photos above 16 megapixels to 16 megapixels, and resize video above 1080p to 1080p. Those changes can occur before you share the item, so selecting Original quality after an item was already stored with Storage saver cannot restore detail that was discarded during the earlier backup.

Sharing from Google Photos is a separate operation
Google Photos can share an album, a conversation or a link. A recipient may view the item online, download it, or save a copy to their own library. The fact that the owner’s backup is Original quality does not establish that every one of those routes delivers an identical file. The recipient’s action, the platform and any conversion during download all matter.

Saved items are copies. Google notes that later edits to the owner’s original do not apply to copies that recipients have already saved. If a collaborator must work from the current edit history or the untouched file, provide the original through a file-preserving route instead of relying only on a saved shared copy.
Google Photos storage and access trade-offs
- Google lists up to 15 GB of account storage. Original-quality backups use account storage, so a large photo library can consume that allowance faster than a compressed backup.
- Cloud sharing is useful when people are in different places or use different device platforms; no nearby radio connection is required.
- A link or album is convenient for groups, but a viewer may see a web-rendered version rather than inspect the source file immediately.
- Changing the backup setting affects future uploads and any items that are re-backed up; it does not turn an already-compressed copy back into the original.
If your goal is “keep the camera resolution in my cloud library,” use Original quality. If your goal is “deliver this exact file to another person,” treat the share or download step as a separate quality check.
Does WhatsApp lower picture quality?
WhatsApp documents that shared media is usually compressed and may be lower quality. It also documents an HD option and a media-upload-quality setting. HD can improve the image sent through the normal photo-attachment path, but HD should not be read as a guarantee that the bytes, metadata or edit history are unchanged.
Use HD when a normal image attachment is sufficient
- Open the chat and attach the photo using the app’s normal media picker.
- Before sending, use the HD control if it appears, then choose the higher-quality option.
- Send the image and ask the recipient to open the received item rather than relying on the small chat preview.
- For repeated use, check WhatsApp’s media-upload-quality setting in the app’s storage or data settings. Labels and placement can change between platforms and app versions.
This route is practical for conversation photos where modest re-encoding is acceptable. It is not the right assumption for a print master, a forensic record, a raw camera workflow or any task that requires a byte-for-byte source.

Send as a file or document when fidelity matters
Where the app offers a file or document attachment, use that route instead of the image picker. A file attachment is a distinct workflow and is more likely to preserve the source file than a path designed to optimize pictures for chat. WhatsApp’s iPhone help information says documents may be up to 2 GB; confirm the limit and behavior for the recipient’s platform and current app version before relying on it.
- Open the chat’s attachment menu and choose Document or File, not the photo gallery shortcut.
- Select the original file from the device’s file picker. If the image exists only in a cloud library, download the source first.
- Send it, then have the recipient save the attachment and inspect the saved file’s dimensions, extension and metadata.
Not every messaging app has a document mode, and apps that do may impose different size limits or strip information during processing. Treat “file” as a better opportunity for fidelity, not as proof; verification remains the deciding step.

How to send photos without losing quality
Use this decision process when the image matters more than convenience.

For a nearby Apple recipient, start with AirDrop. For remote or mixed-platform groups, consider Google Photos or a file attachment.
- Decide whether the source file is required. If the recipient needs metadata, edit history or an exact file, do not rely on a chat preview or an unspecified shared link.
- Set the quality before uploading or sending. In Photos, enable All Photos Data for AirDrop. In Google Photos, choose Original quality before backing up. In a messaging app, choose HD or the file/document route when available.
- Check privacy information. Location, capture time, device details and captions may travel with the file. Remove or disable metadata when the recipient does not need it.
- Send one representative file first. This catches format, size and compatibility problems before you transfer an entire library.
- Verify the received copy. Compare pixel dimensions, file extension, file size and relevant metadata. For a professional handoff, open the file in an editor or file manager that can display these properties.
- Keep the source until verification is complete. A successful send notification only confirms delivery to the service or device, not that the recipient received the exact representation you intended.
Common failure modes and fixes
The recipient says the photo is blurry
First determine whether the recipient is viewing a thumbnail or the downloaded file. If the file itself has smaller dimensions, resend through AirDrop with All Photos Data, Google Photos with an Original-quality source, or a file/document attachment. If the dimensions match but the image still looks different, check whether the destination converted the format or rendered a different color profile.

The shared Google Photos item is not the original
Check the owner’s backup quality and the item’s stored dimensions. Original quality protects the backup only when selected before the item is stored. Then ask how the recipient obtained the image: viewing a link, saving a copy, downloading from an album and exporting from another app are not identical operations.
WhatsApp’s HD option still does not meet the requirement
HD is an improved media setting, not a promise of untouched bytes. Resend the source through the app’s Document or File route if available, or use AirDrop for a nearby Apple recipient. Confirm the received file before removing the original.
A Live Photo arrived as a still
The destination may not support Live Photos. AirDrop can preserve the item between compatible Apple devices, but Apple notes that unsupported destinations may receive a still image. If motion is essential, tell the recipient which platform they are using and provide a compatible export as a separate file.
Metadata exposed more than expected
Inspect the share options before sending. Apple identifies date, time, location, device and captions as possible photo metadata. A technically original file can therefore reveal more information than a compressed copy; fidelity and privacy are separate decisions.
Which should you choose?
Choose AirDrop when
- The recipient is nearby and uses an Apple device.
- You need the original file, edit history or metadata.
- You can enable All Photos Data and confirm the receiving format.
Choose Google Photos when
- You need cloud access, albums, links or cross-device group viewing.
- You can use Original quality and accept that backups count toward account storage.
- The recipient needs convenient access rather than a guaranteed byte-for-byte handoff.
Choose a messaging app when
- Conversation context and speed matter most.
- Some compression is acceptable, or the app provides an HD mode that is sufficient for the purpose.
- You can use a documented file/document attachment and verify the result when exact fidelity matters.
The safest habit across all three choices is to separate the questions “Where is the source stored?”, “How is it being shared?” and “What file did the recipient actually receive?” Those are different operations, and the quality setting for one does not automatically control the others.
