Neither Airbnb nor hotels are proven to be categorically more reliable for festival accommodation. The safer choice depends on the specific reservation: its cancellation terms, what happens if the place cannot host you, who can help after hours, how you will get back from the festival, and whether you can still find another place if plans fail.
Is Airbnb or a hotel more likely to cancel?
There is no verified comparative cancellation-rate statistic here that establishes a universal winner. An individual community discussion raises the concern of a well-reviewed host canceling, but it does not show how often that happens. Reviews can inform a decision about a particular host; they cannot prove that a booking will be honored.
Hotels may suit travelers who prefer a staffed property and lodging business with room operations. That preference is not evidence that hotels have a lower failure rate, or that every hotel can relocate a guest if something goes wrong. Compare the actual hotel, host, and booking channel rather than relying on the category name.
What happens if an Airbnb host cancels or the stay has a problem?
Under Airbnb’s Rebooking and Refund Policy for homes, effective February 6, 2025, a host cancellation before check-in entitles the guest to a full refund. Airbnb may help find a similar place, depending on availability at comparable pricing. A refund is recourse, but it does not guarantee replacement lodging near a sold-out festival.

The policy also covers problems such as being unable to access the accommodation, uninhabitable conditions, or significant differences between the stay and its listing. Airbnb requires guests to report a reservation issue within 72 hours after discovering it and provide relevant evidence. This is Airbnb’s policy deadline, not a general legal deadline.
For a guest-initiated cancellation, refunds are generally governed by the listing’s cancellation policy. Airbnb’s guest cancellations and refunds guidance explains that guests should check the terms attached to their reservation.

Does a festival cancellation let you cancel Airbnb for a refund?
Not automatically. Airbnb’s Major Disruptive Events Policy applies only when an event affects the reservation location, occurs after booking, and prevents or legally prohibits completion of the reservation. The policy specifically excludes a festival cancellation or rescheduling as an automatic qualifying event. Airbnb also says the policy is not insurance.
Before booking, read the listing’s exact cancellation terms, including the deadline, penalties, and applicable local time. If considering travel insurance, check the policy wording for the specific disruption and expenses involved; do not assume it covers a festival cancellation or replacement accommodation.

How to compare a specific hotel and Airbnb booking
Use the same practical checks for both options, then add the platform- or property-specific details. A confirmation alone does not answer every question about what happens if plans fail.

When each option may fit better
A hotel may fit your needs if
- You prefer a staffed property and can confirm who is reachable after hours.
- The room’s cancellation deadline, penalties, and total price work for your plans.
- You have checked how you will return from the festival, rather than judging access only by distance.
An Airbnb may fit your needs if
- The listing meets your group’s needs, and the host’s communication and check-in arrangements are clear.
- You understand the listing-specific cancellation terms and Airbnb’s remedies if the host cancels or a covered problem occurs.
- You have considered that replacement accommodation near the festival may not be available, even if a refund is due.
Make a backup plan that can actually work
A backup is useful only if it is available when needed and its terms allow you to use it. Before relying on a second reservation, check its own cancellation deadline, penalties, location, and late-night access. If keeping two bookings, make sure you know when the backup must be canceled to avoid an unwanted charge.
