A correctly sized, correctly run portable air purifier can reduce some airborne particles in one room, including the fine particles (PM2.5) of greatest health concern. It will not make a home pollutant-free, and it can’t promise any health outcome. The number that tells you whether a unit can do its job is CADR, the clean air delivery rate, not the “covers 1,000 sq ft” line on the box.
Terms: air purifier, air cleaner, portable air cleaner
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) uses “air cleaner” and “portable air cleaner” for the devices shoppers call air purifiers. This article uses the terms interchangeably. EPA states that it “does not certify or recommend particular brands or models of air filters or portable air cleaners.” Treat the guidance below as a way to evaluate any model, not as an endorsement. What a purifier can and cannot do
- It can filter some airborne particles from the room it sits in, if it moves enough air.
- It cannot remove every pollutant. Many units are built mainly for particles, not gases.
- It does not replace source control or ventilation. EPA’s wording: “Air cleaning may be useful when used along with source control and ventilation, but it is not a substitute for either method.” (EPA, Air Cleaners, HVAC Filters, and Respiratory Viruses)
- It won’t fix mold. A purifier may capture some mold particles, but the moisture problem causing growth has to be repaired.
- Symptom relief is modest and uneven. EPA notes that allergy and asthma studies have not shown large improvements in every symptom.
Step 1: Match CADR to your room
CADR measures how much filtered air a cleaner delivers for specified particles. Ignore vague “room size” claims and compare CADR to your floor area. EPA’s general guide gives these minimum CADR estimates for particle removal, assuming an 8-foot ceiling, scaling proportionally for other sizes:

Go higher for high ceilings or open floor plans, where the air volume is bigger than the floor area suggests. Also check what speed the CADR was rated at. It is typically measured at high speed, so a unit run on its quietest setting filters less air. That is the usual trade-off between noise, energy use and cleaning.

Smoke and small particles
For smoke, look at the smoke CADR specifically. EPA’s wildfire guidance says to choose a cleaner whose smoke CADR is at least two-thirds of the room area in square feet. A 300 sq ft room would need a smoke CADR of about 200. (EPA, Indoor Air Filtration) For wildfire smoke, EPA also suggests running the cleaner continuously at its highest fan setting in a “cleaner air room.” (EPA, How to Create a Cleaner Air Room at Home)
Step 2: Decide whether you need gas or odor removal
CADR describes particle removal only. For gases and some odors, EPA says to look for activated carbon or another gas-targeted sorbent filter, and a large amount of carbon matters. No widely used performance rating exists for portable gas filters, so a thin carbon layer on a particle filter is hard to judge from the spec sheet, and not all carbon filters perform equally.

Step 3: Avoid ozone
EPA is blunt: “Do not use ozone generators in occupied spaces.” Ozone is a lung irritant, and levels that stay within public health standards do not effectively remove viruses, bacteria, mold or other biological pollutants. EPA’s wildfire advice is to use a CARB-certified air cleaner, which limits ozone emissions. Certification lists change, so check the specific model you’re considering.

Step 4: Plan for upkeep
Dirty or overloaded filters work less well. Before buying, confirm that replacement filters are available for the exact model and what the manufacturer’s replacement schedule is. Filter cost over a few years can outweigh the purchase price. When you replace one, buy the model-compatible filter the maker specifies.

Alternatives to a portable unit
Central HVAC filtration
A furnace or HVAC filter cleans air for the whole home, but only while the system’s fan runs. EPA advises MERV 13 or the highest efficiency your equipment can accommodate. Ask the manufacturer or an HVAC professional whether your system can handle it, since denser filters restrict airflow.
DIY box-fan filters
Where commercial cleaners are unavailable or unaffordable, a box fan with furnace filters can help. EPA says commercial cleaners with known CADR are generally preferred because a DIY unit’s CADR is usually unknown. EPA’s laboratory tests, using simulated wildfire smoke in a room-sized chamber (the page appears to date from around 2021), showed design matters: (EPA, Research on DIY Air Cleaners)

Quick buying checklist
- Measure the room’s square footage and note ceiling height.
- Find the unit’s CADR (smoke CADR for smoke) and the fan speed it was measured at.
- Compare it to the table above, or to two-thirds of the area for smoke.
- Choose substantial activated carbon only if gases or odors are the goal.
- Rule out ozone generators; check CARB certification for the exact model.
- Price the replacement filters and confirm they’re available.
- Fix sources (smoking, moisture, cooking emissions) and ventilate with clean outdoor air when conditions allow.
