Choose an evaporative air cooler when your climate is hot and dry, you welcome added moisture, and you can circulate outdoor air. Choose a room air conditioner when humidity control or more predictable room cooling matters. Neither is the universal winner: climate, room size, ventilation and installation determine which works better for you.

How an air cooler and a room air conditioner cool a room

Evaporative air cooler

An evaporative cooler uses the evaporation of water to cool incoming outdoor air, then circulates that air indoors. Because evaporation adds moisture, this approach is best suited to dry conditions. The U.S. Department of Energy says that in an arid climate, an evaporative cooler can be a cost-effective cooling option (DOE Energy Saver).

Room air conditioner

A room AC uses a refrigerant cycle to move heat from indoor air to outside. It also removes humidity, which can make it a better fit in humid weather or when damp-feeling air is a concern. Its performance depends on selecting a suitable capacity and installing the unit as directed (ENERGY STAR).

Which one fits your climate and room?

Room condition or priority Better starting point Why
Hot, dry climate; added moisture is acceptable Evaporative cooler Evaporation can cool outdoor air in arid conditions; the cooler adds moisture indoors.
Humid climate or a need to remove moisture Room air conditioner An AC removes heat and humidity, while an evaporative cooler adds moisture.
Predictable cooling in a particular room Room air conditioner A correctly sized room AC is the stronger choice when controlled room cooling matters.
Outdoor-air circulation is impractical Room air conditioner An evaporative cooler circulates incoming outdoor air, so ventilation practicality matters.

These are directional choices, not a humidity-threshold formula: the cited sources do not establish a universal numerical cutoff for when an evaporative cooler stops being suitable. Consider how humid the room already feels, whether outdoor air can be brought in, and whether added moisture would be welcome.

How to choose and size a room air conditioner

  1. Measure the room. Calculate its floor area and use the manufacturer’s capacity guidance for that space. ENERGY STAR recommends matching a room AC’s capacity to room area (ENERGY STAR).
  2. Avoid oversizing. An oversized unit can cool a room before removing enough humidity, leaving it cool but clammy. It can also cost more and waste energy, according to ENERGY STAR.
  3. Check the unit’s efficiency information. Compare ENERGY STAR certification and CEER among room ACs in comparable categories. ENERGY STAR says certified room ACs are 19–36% more energy efficient than minimum federal government standards; check the current criteria and applicable product class when comparing a specific model (ENERGY STAR criteria).
  4. Confirm installation fit. Check the product’s window, sealing and installation requirements before buying. A unit that cannot be fitted and sealed as directed is not a good match for the room.

What efficiency figures can—and cannot—tell you

ENERGY STAR certification and CEER help compare room air conditioners, but they do not establish what a particular household will pay. The Department of Energy’s Federal Energy Management Program (FEMP) published a worked lifecycle example in its room-AC guidance updated December 2024. It compares room ACs without reverse cycle in a defined capacity band, using a nine-year lifetime and stated energy assumptions. The figures below are federal acquisition calculations, not current retail prices or a comparison with evaporative coolers (DOE FEMP).

Room AC model category in FEMP example CEER Annual energy use Annual energy cost Nine-year lifetime energy cost
Less-efficient baseline 10.9 826 kWh $91 $648
ENERGY STAR model 14.7 612 kWh $67 $480
Best-available model 15.4 584 kWh $64 $458

In that same FEMP example, the ENERGY STAR model’s lifetime savings are $167 and the best-available model’s are $189 against the less-efficient baseline. The calculations use the example’s assumptions; premiums are expressed in 2023 dollars. Your costs depend on factors such as local electricity prices and how much you use the unit.

Compare the practical trade-offs before buying

  • Ventilation: An evaporative cooler brings outdoor air into circulation. Consider whether that is workable in your room and climate.
  • Water and upkeep: An evaporative cooler uses water. Check the specific product’s water requirements and maintenance instructions; a general water-use or maintenance comparison with room ACs is not established by the cited sources.
  • Installation: Check that a room AC fits the window or other intended location and can be installed and sealed according to its instructions.
  • Total cost: Weigh purchase price, energy use, water, installation and maintenance alongside the comfort you need. The FEMP lifecycle example illustrates room-AC energy calculations, not total costs for both technologies.
  • Local availability: Before choosing a specific model, confirm it is currently sold in your area, suits the room and installation constraints, and qualifies for any local utility rebate you intend to use.
