The most practical gadget upgrade for an existing air conditioner is a compatible smart AC controller: it can add phone control, schedules and, depending on the product, smart-home automations. Room and presence sensors can make those controls more responsive. Fans and air purifiers serve separate comfort or indoor-air goals; they do not increase an AC’s cooling capacity.
1. Smart AC controller: add phone control and schedules
A smart AC controller communicates with a compatible air conditioner through its remote-control system. Depending on the model, it can let you adjust settings in an app, set schedules, or connect cooling to automations. It is the closest thing on this list to an upgrade of the AC itself, but it does not make the unit more powerful.
Sensibo describes its compatibility as covering “any air conditioner or heat pump with a remote control,” and lists window, split, cassette, portable and central AC types. That is the manufacturer’s broad description, not a guarantee for every unit: confirm compatibility for your exact AC before buying. tado° Smart AC Control requires an infrared remote that displays the current mode, temperature and fan settings.

Check the functions you need as well as compatibility. tado° says app control and schedules are included, while automatic geofencing and open-window detection require its Auto-Assist subscription. Its reported coverage of “3,000+ models and 200+ brands” is a vendor figure, not an independent compatibility test.

2. Room temperature and humidity sensor: read conditions where you sit
An AC’s onboard sensor may not reflect conditions across the room. A separate temperature and humidity sensor can provide readings from another location, which may help a supported controller or smart-home setup make decisions using that room’s conditions. Check whether a sensor is included or sold separately: Sensibo says its Room Sensor is an optional separate purchase.
HomeSmart’s Singapore listings include an Aqara W100 temperature and humidity sensor in its smart-aircon setup. Availability and the exact supported integrations may vary by region and configuration; verify those details with the seller and product documentation.

3. Presence sensor: automate cooling around occupancy
A presence sensor can let a compatible controller or automation respond to whether a room is occupied—for example, by changing a cooling routine when a room is empty. HomeSmart presents Aqara’s FP300 as an accessory for stopping cooling in empty rooms. That is a vendor-described use case, not proof of energy savings; results depend on the automation, household habits and AC.
4. Smart air circulator fan: support air movement
A fan can circulate air alongside an AC and may suit people who want more air movement in a room. Apple’s Home accessories directory lists a Smartmi Air Circulator Fan. The cited listing establishes the product category, not that this fan lowers room temperature or improves an AC’s efficiency.

5. Standalone smart air purifier: address a separate indoor-air need
A smart air purifier is a separate appliance, not an AC control upgrade. Apple’s accessories directory lists smart air purifiers, but the listing alone does not establish a particular air-quality outcome or cooling benefit. Consider one for an indoor-air goal, and assess its specifications for that goal rather than expecting it to make the AC cool better.

How to choose an AC gadget that fits
- Identify your exact AC. Check its type and model, whether it has a remote, and whether that remote uses infrared. For products such as tado°, confirm the remote also shows the current mode, temperature and fan settings.
- Check ecosystem and subscription requirements. Confirm that the controller works with your smart-home platform and which features require an ongoing subscription.
- Verify sensor inclusions. Room sensors may be optional rather than bundled with a controller.
- Match plug and electrical specifications. Aqara describes its upgraded AC companion for 16A plugs and notes that some 10A outlets may need adapters. This is region-specific; do not assume the same requirements apply in other markets. Check local electrical standards and the product’s exact specifications.
- Check whether the model is still sold. A live product page does not guarantee current availability. GE marks its APFA08YBMW portable AC as no longer manufactured.
- Keep the goal realistic. A controller adds control; a sensor adds information; a fan moves air; and a purifier is a separate appliance. None makes an undersized or malfunctioning AC adequate.
