AI can produce code quickly, but the team still has to understand, verify, and change what lands in the codebase. A 2026 analysis of 304,362 verified AI-authored commits found that more than 15% of commits from each of five studied coding assistants introduced at least one issue. That is evidence of a real maintenance risk—not proof that every project will face the same defect rate, or that costs reliably appear after three months.

What “the maintenance bill” means

The bill is the work required to keep software understandable and safe to change after it has been written: tracing behavior, resolving defects, aligning inconsistent patterns, and checking that a change has not broken something else. AI-generated code does not automatically create technical debt. Debt accumulates when implementation choices make future changes harder, or when problems are left unresolved.

A plausible failure path is that generated code satisfies a local request while carrying assumptions the surrounding system does not share. If reviewers accept it without understanding those assumptions, later work may require extra investigation or refactoring. That sequence is a useful way to think about risk, not a universal timeline established by research.

What the evidence says—and what it does not

Issues appear in real repositories

The 2026 preprint “Debt Behind the AI Boom” examined 304,362 verified AI-authored commits across 6,275 GitHub repositories and five coding assistants. By comparing static-analysis findings before and after commits, the authors identified 484,606 distinct issues. Code smells—patterns associated with maintainability concerns—accounted for 89.1% of those issues. More than 15% of commits for every assistant in the study introduced at least one issue.

Those figures describe that study’s repositories, assistants, and static-analysis method; they are not a predicted defect rate for a particular team. Static analysis can identify patterns and potential problems, but the study’s counts should not be read as a tally of equally severe, user-visible failures.

Some tracked issues persisted

Of the AI-introduced issues tracked in the same study, 24.2% remained at the latest repository revision observed by the authors. Persistence shows that at least some detected issues were not subsequently removed in those histories. It does not establish why they remained, whether they caused harm, or how long any one issue took to fix.

“Maintainability” is not one shared measurement

A separate 2026 study, “Echoes of AI: Investigating the downstream effects of AI assistants on software maintainability,” uses time to implement changes as a proxy for maintainability. Its data collection occurred in late 2024, before the current coding-agent wave discussed by the paper. Change time is also affected by ramp-up, environment setup, and what participants count as done, so it is useful context rather than a direct measurement of the maintenance burden of autonomous agents in 2026.

Architecture can matter, but the broader evidence is not AI-specific

A 2025 Google Research study of more than 1,200 C++ and Java projects, alongside 7,200 survey responses, connected higher architectural complexity with more developer effort spent fixing bugs rather than adding features. The finding is relevant to the general cost of complexity, but it does not show that AI caused that complexity or that AI-generated code has the same relationship in every system. Practitioner reports and security perceptions need careful reading

A 2024 study of 53 AI practitioners reported that code and architecture debt can harm maintainability, and that practitioners described limited support beyond manual identification and refactoring. This is practitioner evidence, not a measure of how common the problem is across all developers: “Technical debt in AI-enabled systems.”

A 2025 survey of 105 developers investigated perceptions of security in AI-generated code. Its results concern respondents’ confidence and reported practices, not a measured prevalence of vulnerabilities in AI-authored software: “My Code Is Less Secure with Gen AI.”

How to keep generated code maintainable

Treat generated code as a proposed change, not as verified code. The aim is not to reject AI assistance; it is to make the reasoning, checks, and ownership around each change explicit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Keep the change small enough to review. Ask for one coherent behavior change at a time. Smaller diffs make it easier to trace what changed and which tests should cover it.
  2. Require an explanation of the existing system. Before accepting a change, identify the relevant interfaces, data flow, error handling, and conventions. If the implementation introduces a new pattern, ask why it is needed instead of assuming consistency.
  3. Review behavior, not just appearance. Check boundary cases, failure paths, permissions, input handling, and resource cleanup where relevant. Read the surrounding code rather than evaluating a generated fragment in isolation.
  4. Run the project’s normal checks. Use its formatter, linter or static analysis, tests, type checks, and security checks where available. A clean result is evidence about the checks that ran, not proof that the code is correct or secure.
  5. Make tests reflect the requirement. Add or update tests for expected behavior and important edge cases; do not rely only on tests generated alongside the implementation, which may share its assumptions.
  6. Record unresolved trade-offs. If a shortcut is accepted, document the affected area, the consequence, and a condition for revisiting it. A note tied to an owner or follow-up issue is more actionable than a vague comment.
  7. Measure the outcome over time. Track review and change effort, defect fixes, regressions, and escaped issues for AI-assisted changes alongside comparable work. Interpret the results in the context of task size, team experience, and the checks used; a single metric cannot establish that AI caused a maintenance change.

What to do when the bill arrives

Start with impact, not authorship

When a change becomes difficult to modify or a defect appears, investigate the behavior and dependencies as you would for any code. The fact that AI wrote a portion can guide where to inspect, but it does not establish the cause. Identify the failing behavior, the affected paths, and the smallest safe correction.

Separate urgent fixes from structural cleanup

Correct security, data-integrity, and user-impacting defects first. Then decide whether a broader refactor is warranted. A refactor should preserve observable behavior, have tests that protect that behavior, and be scoped so it does not obscure the urgent fix.

Look for a repeated process gap

If similar issues recur, examine whether reviews are too large, assumptions are not being checked, tests miss a class of behavior, or the team lacks a clear convention. Improve the specific control that failed rather than imposing a blanket rule based only on whether code was AI-assisted.

Why “month three” is a story, not a forecast

The available studies do not establish a standard delay between generating code and paying a maintenance cost. A team might encounter a problem during initial review, after a feature changes, or not at all. The month-three framing works as an anecdotal scenario only when it reflects the author’s own project records; it should not be presented as a measured pattern.

The practical lesson is narrower and more useful: generated code can contain maintainability, correctness, and security issues, and some issues in the studied repositories persisted. Teams reduce avoidable surprises by keeping changes reviewable, verifying behavior, and retaining ownership of the resulting system.
