AI search can answer a question before a potential customer visits a website, but that does not mean every business is losing traffic or that AI search alone explains a drop. The practical issue is a changing path from appearing in search to earning a click, a qualified visit, and ultimately a customer. Those are separate outcomes, and businesses need to measure them separately.

Is AI search killing website traffic?

There is evidence that Google AI summaries can reduce clicks to traditional search results on searches where a summary appears. But the available evidence does not show that every business is losing traffic, nor does it establish why a particular site’s performance changed.

Pew Research Center analyzed browsing activity from 900 U.S. adults who shared data through KnowledgePanel Digital. The study covered 68,879 Google searches made in March 2025, including 12,593 that produced an AI summary; results were collected April 7–17, 2025. In that sample:

  • 8% of visits with an AI summary led to a click on a traditional search result, compared with 15% of visits without a summary.
  • 1% of visits to pages with an AI summary led to a click on a source cited in that summary.
  • 18% of searches generated an AI summary, and 88% of those summaries cited at least three sources.
  • Question-word searches beginning with terms such as “who,” “what,” “when,” or “why” generated a summary 60% of the time.

These are observed behaviors in one U.S. sample, on Google, at a particular time—not a forecast for a given site or a measure of every search platform. Pew also found that users often continued searching or left Google without clicking, with or without a summary. Its findings support concern about click behavior, not a claim that all organic traffic is disappearing. Pew Research Center’s study and methodology

Google’s account measures something different

In August 2025, Google said overall organic click volume from Search to websites was “relatively stable year-over-year” and that average click quality had increased. This is Google’s own aggregate account, not an independent audit or a guarantee about any individual site. Google also said some questions can be answered directly, while people may click to explore deeper topics, reviews, original perspectives, or purchase decisions. Google’s statement on Search traffic and click quality

The Pew and Google statements are not direct contradictions: Pew examined user behavior around result pages in a defined sample, while Google reported aggregate traffic and click quality across Search. Neither settles what happened to a particular business. That requires looking at the business’s own pages, visits, and outcomes, while accounting for other changes such as seasonality, rankings, site updates, and demand.

What does “AI visibility” actually mean?

Visibility is not a single score or event. A business can be findable by a search system yet absent from an answer; it can appear in an answer without a visible source link; it can earn a citation that no one clicks; or it can receive visits that do not turn into business.

  1. Index eligibility: Can the search engine access and understand the page?
  2. Answer appearance: Is the business or its information included in an AI-generated response?
  3. Citation or link: Does the response name or link to the business’s site?
  4. Visit: Does someone follow that link or otherwise reach the site?
  5. Outcome: Does the visit produce a qualified lead, sale, subscription, or other goal?

Each stage has different evidence. Search Console can report Google search visibility, while site analytics and business systems help determine whether visits become meaningful outcomes. A third-party tool that samples answers to selected prompts may be useful for a repeatable monitoring workflow, but its sampled response is not the same as a first-party search impression or a conversion.

Why might a business not appear in Google AI answers?

Google says its generative search features rely on core Search ranking and quality systems and use relevant pages from its Search index. It describes retrieval-augmented generation and query fan-out as ways to retrieve additional information. That means there is no documented special setting that guarantees a citation: a page must be accessible and useful enough to be considered, and Google explicitly warns, “Indexing and serving aren’t guaranteed.” Google Search Central guidance on AI features

For a business diagnosing weak visibility, start with the practical causes that can be checked:

  • The page is not discoverable or indexable. Check that important pages are linked from the site, are not unintentionally blocked, and can be crawled. Technical eligibility does not guarantee indexing or display.
  • The page offers little beyond generic claims. A commodity summary may not give readers or search systems a reason to prefer it. Add concrete, accurate details rooted in the business’s actual expertise, service, products, or customer needs.
  • The information is hard to interpret. Use descriptive headings, clear organization, and a technically sound page structure. Keep product, service, location, and contact information consistent and current.
  • The format does not serve the question. Use helpful images or video when they genuinely clarify the subject; do not add media or markup merely to chase an AI feature.

What should businesses do to improve their chances?

Make the useful page easy to find and understand

Maintain foundational SEO: allow crawling where intended, create a clear site structure, and make important pages reachable through internal links. Ensure that page titles, headings, and content communicate what the page covers. Google says that following technical requirements does not guarantee crawling, indexing, or a place in an AI response.

Publish material that reflects real expertise

Build pages around questions customers actually need answered. Include specific, verifiable details—such as service boundaries, product characteristics, processes, trade-offs, or original explanations—when they are relevant and accurate. Avoid padding pages with repeated keywords or unsupported claims. Google recommends unique, non-commodity content and useful media where appropriate.

Skip unsupported AI-search “hacks”

For Google’s generative search features, Google says sites do not need a special llms.txt file, tiny content “chunks,” AI-specific rewrites, inauthentic mentions, or special structured-data markup. Structured data should still be accurate and appropriate for its documented purpose, but it is not a shortcut to an AI citation. These recommendations describe Google Search; they do not guarantee how other answer engines work.

How can you measure AI search visibility?

Start with Google Search Console

Use Google’s Generative AI performance report as the first-party starting point for Google visibility. Google’s June 3, 2026 announcement, updated August 31, 2026, said AI-search appearance controls and insights—including impressions, pages, and countries—had rolled out to all websites worldwide as of August 31, 2026. Reporting features can change, so check the current Search Console interface and documentation for what is available to your property. Google also reported that AI Overviews had more than 2.5 billion monthly active users and AI Mode had surpassed one billion monthly users. Those are Google-reported scale figures, not independent audience measurements; they describe product reach, not the likelihood that a particular business will be cited or visited.

Connect visibility to visits and business outcomes

Compare Search Console visibility with organic sessions and relevant conversions over time. Where your reporting allows, segment by page, query, country, or other useful dimension. Track qualified visits, leads, sales, or subscriptions—not raw impressions alone. Set a baseline, note site and market changes, and avoid attributing a before-and-after movement to AI search without considering other plausible causes.

Use third-party monitoring carefully

Google cautions that third-party tools do not have access to its internal ranking or AI systems. They can help teams monitor selected prompts or organize workflows, but treat their outputs as sampled observations, not authoritative measures of Google-wide exposure. When comparing tools, check which platforms they cover, whether a metric is a direct first-party impression or a vendor’s sampled answer, how repeatable results are across location, language, and time, whether data can be exported with page or query detail, and whether visibility can be connected to qualified visits or conversions. A practical response to an AI visibility problem

  1. Establish the symptom. Identify which pages or business outcomes changed, and when. Compare like periods and check for other changes that could explain the movement.
  2. Check access and structure. Confirm that important pages are crawlable, internally linked, clearly organized, and technically sound.
  3. Improve the page for customers. Replace generic copy with useful, accurate information grounded in the business’s real expertise and offerings.
  4. Measure the stages separately. Review Search Console visibility, referral and organic visits, and business outcomes. Treat AI-answer monitoring from vendors as sampled evidence.
  5. Repeat the cycle. Recheck exposure and outcomes after changes, and keep improvements that help customers rather than chasing a supposed guaranteed citation tactic.
