Neither is better for every stage of a trip. An AI travel planner can help turn your preferences into an itinerary and surface ideas; an online travel agency (OTA), airline, hotel, or other booking provider is where you should verify available offers, compare the final price and terms, and confirm who will handle your reservation. Some services combine these steps, so judge the actual booking flow—not just the label on the tool.
What’s the difference between an AI travel planner and an OTA?
An AI travel planner is primarily a way to explore and organize a trip: you describe your dates, interests, budget, or constraints, and it can help generate suggestions or an itinerary. An OTA is a marketplace or booking service where travelers can compare and reserve travel products. The categories are not mutually exclusive: an AI feature may be built into a booking site, or it may direct you to a separate booking partner.
For example, Google says Gemini can assist with travel planning and provide real-time flight information, while noting that feature availability varies. Expedia’s AI tools include Property Q&A, AI Compare, and Activity Planner; Expedia describes them as planning tools and tells users to review the relevant hotel or activity details before booking. How are AI planning and booking starting to overlap?
Google’s AI Mode announcement describes travel planning with booking options, and its hotel-booking help says hotel reservations made through that flow are booked directly with the booking partner. Google says it displays a confirmation; the partner is the party taking the reservation. The arrangement applies to that described flow and should not be assumed for other AI tools. Google’s announcement names partners for its rollout, but participating providers and availability can change by geography and over time. Check what is offered in your location and language, and read the booking screen to identify the actual provider before you pay.

How to move from an AI itinerary to a confirmed trip
- Use AI to shape the draft. Give the planner your dates, destination, interests, budget range, and constraints. Treat its output as a starting point, not a reservation.
- Verify the details that matter. Check dates, locations, opening or travel times, and whether the hotel, activity, or flight fits your needs. Expedia specifically advises users to review the relevant property or activity details before booking.
- Compare actual offers. Search an OTA, airline, hotel, or other supplier channel for the dates and options you intend to book. Compare what is included, not just the initial displayed amount.
- Read the terms at checkout. Check the total price, mandatory fees, cancellation and change rules, and any relevant conditions before confirming.
- Identify the responsible provider. Note which company accepts payment, issues the confirmation, and provides support for changes or refunds. Responsibility depends on the specific booking and terms; do not assume every OTA or AI service handles every request.
What should U.S. travelers know about hotel fees?
For U.S. short-term lodging, the FTC’s Unfair or Deceptive Fees Rule took effect on May 12, 2025. The FTC says its coverage includes lodging offers by third-party platforms, resellers, and travel agents, and requires mandatory fees to be included in the total price. Booking.com reported that 41% of surveyed travelers said they would be interested in a personalized, curated itinerary driven by AI. The company said it commissioned the study among adults planning business or leisure travel in the next 12–24 months, with responses gathered in July–August 2024. That is a stated interest in a commissioned 2024 survey—not evidence that 41% of travelers currently use AI planners, nor an independent measure of adoption. Booking.com announcement

Which should you choose?
- Start with an AI planner if you need help turning preferences into a route, shortlist, or set of ideas.
- Use an OTA or supplier channel when you need to see bookable offers and verify price and terms.
- Use a combined AI-to-booking flow if it suits your needs, but confirm which partner actually takes the reservation and provides support.
The practical choice is often not one tool or the other: use AI to make the planning stage easier, then rely on the booking provider’s offer and terms to make the purchase decision.
