“AI Tackles the Sound Barrier” is about imitating sounds with a human voice—not aircraft or supersonic flight. A Hackster.io account of MIT CSAIL work describes an AI system that models aspects of the vocal tract to generate sound imitations, and can analyze a person’s imitation to help identify the sound being imitated.

Can AI identify a sound from someone’s vocal imitation?
The account says the system can also interpret a person’s vocal imitation and identify a likely sound source. One example is distinguishing a cat’s meow from its hiss based on how someone imitates the sound. This is a description of the system’s intended capability, not evidence that it is a general-purpose sound-recognition product available to consumers.

What did the reported evaluation show?
Hackster.io reports that human judges preferred AI-generated imitations in some cases, with the article giving a figure of up to 75 percent. The underlying study, participant sample, comparison conditions, and statistical meaning of that figure were not independently verified. It should therefore be read as a result reported by that account, not as a general performance guarantee or a claim that the system wins every comparison.
What are the system’s limitations?
The same account says the system struggles with consonants such as “z” and does not yet reproduce speech, music, or culturally specific imitations. These limitations are reported by Hackster.io; without the primary documentation, their scope and the conditions under which they were observed are not established.
