No credible forecast establishes that one skill will be the only one that matters in AI two years from now. The more useful answer is a combination: learn to use AI safely, judge whether its work is sound, and bring the analytical thinking, communication, and expertise your job requires.
What skills will matter most in the age of AI?
Employer forecasts point to a changing mix of skills, not a single winner. The World Economic Forum’s 2025 Future of Jobs Report estimates that employers expect 39% of workers’ core skills to change by 2030. That is an expectation, not a measured outcome; the report put the comparable figure at 44% in its 2023 edition.
In the same 2025 report, seven out of 10 companies consider analytical thinking essential, making it the leading core skill in the report. AI and big data rank among the fastest-growing skills over the next five years, alongside networks and cybersecurity and technological literacy. Creative thinking, resilience, and lifelong learning are also expected to grow in importance. These are employer outlooks and can vary by occupation, industry, and region—not guarantees about every worker’s future.
What AI skills should I learn for work?
Build practical AI literacy
AI literacy means understanding what the tools you use can and cannot do, selecting appropriate uses, and recognizing when a person must review the result. The International Labour Organization’s 2026 report, Changing landscape of skills in the age of AI, describes AI literacy as foundational and connects it with safe, ethical use, human agency, and inclusion. Its broader message is to build capabilities for AI-augmented work, rather than rely on a narrow set of tool-specific tricks.

For a practical learning plan, start with tasks you actually do: draft, summarize, analyze, or organize information. Practice giving a tool clear context and constraints, then check its output against source material, workplace rules, and your own subject knowledge. Treat a fluent answer as a draft to evaluate, not proof that the answer is correct.
Pair tool use with judgment
The valuable capability is not simply getting an AI system to produce something. It is deciding whether AI is appropriate for the task, directing it toward a useful result, spotting errors or missing context, and improving the work before anyone relies on it. Microsoft Research’s 2026 summary describes people’s role as guiding, critiquing, and improving AI work as workplace collaboration changes. That is the group’s characterization of an evolving workplace, not a rule that applies identically to every job.

Keep developing technical fluency and human skills
Technical fluency matters alongside human capabilities. Depending on your role, useful learning may include data handling, cybersecurity basics, and how the AI tools embedded in your workplace operate. Analytical thinking helps you test claims and interpret results; communication and collaboration help you explain decisions and work effectively with other people. Adaptability and continued learning help you respond as tools and job tasks change.

Will AI literacy be enough to stay employable?
AI literacy is a strong foundation, but the sources do not establish it as a guarantee of employability or as a substitute for occupational expertise. LinkedIn data reported by the WEF says the number of AI literacy skills added by LinkedIn members rose 177% since 2023. That figure counts member profile additions; it does not measure demonstrated competence, wage gains, or hiring outcomes. A profile entry is not the same as being able to use a tool responsibly and produce reliable work.

Choose learning that fits your role and starting point. Favor practice on realistic tasks over prompt memorization, and look for instruction in checking outputs, safety, and responsible use. A useful course should also help you strengthen judgment, communication, and collaboration; weigh its time and cost against whether its credential is recognized in your field.

- Pick a recurring task. Choose work where AI assistance could be useful, while avoiding sensitive data unless your organization’s policies explicitly permit its use.
- Learn the tool in context. Use a role-appropriate learning path and practice on realistic examples, not only generic demonstrations. Microsoft’s learning resources include AI learning paths, responsible AI material, and human-skills topics such as adaptability, decision-making, communication, and social intelligence.
- Make verification part of the task. Check factual claims against reliable material, review calculations and assumptions, and follow workplace requirements before using or sharing the result.
- Ask what your field needs next. Use the broad skills outlook as context, then prioritize the technical, analytical, and interpersonal capabilities tied to your occupation.
Skills forecasts are signals for planning, not promises about the next two years. The WEF report describes employer expectations, the ILO report emphasizes a broader set of capabilities, and Microsoft Research describes its own view of changing collaboration. None establishes one skill as decisive for every person.
