No single product stops prompt injection or data leakage. The sound approach is to limit what an AI application can read and do, then add runtime guardrails that inspect prompts, retrieved content, tool traffic and responses. As of October 2026, this shortlist names nine AI security tools worth evaluating, but it is not a ranking. Three of them, Check Point AI Guardrails, NVIDIA NeMo Guardrails and Palo Alto Prisma AIRS AI Gateway guardrails, have documented runtime protections for prompt injection and sensitive data. The other six are vendors named in OWASP’s 2026 solutions landscape, and their current capabilities need to be confirmed against their own documentation.

How prompt injection and data leakage reach an AI application

Prompt injection happens when crafted instructions change how a model behaves. The instructions can arrive in two ways. In direct prompt injection, a user types them into the application. In indirect prompt injection, they sit inside content the application pulls in, such as a document, web page or email that a retrieval step passes to the model. OWASP’s official Top 10 page for LLM applications states the consequence plainly: “Manipulating LLMs via crafted inputs can lead to unauthorized access, data breaches, and compromised decision-making.” That sentence is OWASP’s own, not attributed to a named individual.

Data leakage has several routes, and not all of them look like an attack:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Sensitive content in output. The model repeats personal data, credentials or confidential text it was given in its context.
  • System prompt disclosure. An attacker coaxes the application into revealing its hidden instructions, which can expose business logic or internal details.
  • Overbroad access. If retrieval or a connected tool can reach records the current user is not allowed to see, the model can surface them even when no one has attacked it directly.

Agents add more entry points. Tool calls, tool responses, retrieved material and tool descriptions can all carry untrusted text. A tool that can send email, change records or move money turns a successful injection into a consequential action. A check that looks only at the user’s message misses these other paths.

Build the controls before you buy a tool

A guardrail detects and enforces at specific points. It cannot decide which data your application should be allowed to use or which actions it should be allowed to take. Put the following controls in place first, then use a tool to watch the points that remain.

  1. Inventory data and tools. List every source the model can read (documents, databases, tickets, web pages) and every tool or API it can call. Mark which sources hold personal, financial or confidential data, and which tools can write, delete or send.
  2. Apply least privilege. Give each tool the narrowest credentials and scope the workflow needs. Remove write, delete and export rights that the use case does not require.
  3. Enforce the asking user’s permissions at retrieval. Filter what the retrieval step returns to the permissions of the person making the request, so the model never receives material that user could not open directly.
  4. Treat retrieved content and tool outputs as untrusted. Text inside a document or an API response is data, not instructions. It should not override system prompts or trigger actions on its own.
  5. Validate inputs and outputs. Screen requests before they reach the model and responses before they reach users or downstream systems. Redact or block personal data and secrets when they appear.
  6. Require human approval for consequential actions. Payments, deletions, permission changes and outbound messages should wait for a person to confirm.
  7. Test adversarially before launch and after every change. Try direct injection, malicious text planted in documents, poisoned tool descriptions, and requests for the system prompt or other users’ records. Repeat the tests when you change the model, prompts, tools or data sources.

How to read this shortlist

The nine entries rest on two different kinds of evidence, so they should not be compared as equals.

The first three are described in their vendors’ own product documentation as performing runtime checks for prompt injection or sensitive data. That shows what the products are designed to do. It does not show how accurately they detect attacks, because no independent comparative test of detection performance across these products is cited here.

The remaining six appear in OWASP’s 2026 solutions landscape. A landscape listing helps identify vendors, but it is not a test of effectiveness and does not establish that one product outperforms another. Treat those six as candidates to investigate, not as proven options.

None of the figures in this article measure detection rates or false positives. Accuracy claims in vendor marketing should be treated as claims until you test them against your own data and attack examples.

Three products with documented runtime protections

Check Point AI Guardrails

Check Point documents runtime detection of prompt attacks and data leakage. Its coverage reaches beyond the user’s message: the documentation covers agent tool calls, tool responses and tool descriptions, and describes a guard API that spans agent workflow interactions. Agents that call external tools are where this matters most, so confirm that the coverage applies to the specific tools you run.

Rank #4
Thetis Pro FIDO2 Security Key Passkey with Complex Pin [PinPlex], Hardware Device Supports USB A, Type C &NFC, TOTP/HOTP Authenticator APP, PIV Certificates, FIDO 2.0 Two Factor Authentication 2FA MFA

  • Multi-Layer Authentication Support – Includes PIV certificates and supports both TOTP and HOTP for strong 2FA/MFA coverage across enterprise and consumer apps.

NVIDIA NeMo Guardrails

NeMo Guardrails is a developer library rather than a packaged appliance. NVIDIA documents configurable rails for jailbreak protection, PII detection, agentic security, and validation of tool calls and results. Teams that prefer not to embed the library in application code can deploy the production-ready microservice option as a separate service. Because you write and maintain the rails yourself, budget engineering time to define, test and update the policies as your application changes.

Palo Alto Prisma AIRS AI Gateway guardrails

Prisma AIRS AI Gateway guardrails sit inline on requests and responses. They check for prompt injection and sensitive data, and the policy can deny a request, redact the sensitive content, or log the finding and allow it. That range is the key design decision. Denying every hit can break legitimate workflows, while logging alone does not stop leakage. Palo Alto’s documentation identifies regional and activation requirements, so confirm where the gateway can be deployed and which features your plan enables before you buy.

Six vendors named in OWASP’s 2026 landscape

Lakera, Cisco AI Validation, Protect AI, CalypsoAI, HiddenLayer and Straiker appear in OWASP’s 2026 solutions landscape. That listing does not describe what any of them currently does for prompt injection or data leakage, so none is profiled here. Before adding one to your own shortlist, check its current vendor documentation for:

  • The exact current product name, since product names and packaging change.
  • Which interaction points it inspects: user input, retrieved content, tool calls and results, and final output.
  • Whether it can deny or redact content, or only flag and log it.
  • Supported deployment models and any regional or licensing conditions.
