AI-generated search answers can help people find information without visiting the sites that supplied it. That makes a website’s job twofold: remain clear and eligible to be discovered as a source, and give visitors a reason to come for something they cannot get from a short summary. There is no special AI markup that guarantees citations; the practical foundation is still accessible, useful content and a way to measure whether visibility leads to meaningful outcomes.
How is AI search changing what a website needs to do?
Traditional search often works as a path from query to results page to website. An AI summary can answer some of the query on the results page itself. A site may therefore be seen or used as a source without receiving a visit, while a person with a more involved need may still click through to explore, compare, or act.
The click difference is visible in a specific U.S. study, but it should not be generalized to every search. Pew Research Center analyzed 68,879 unique Google searches made in March 2025; 18% returned an AI summary. In study visits where a summary appeared, users clicked a traditional result in 8% of visits, compared with 15% when no summary appeared. A link within the AI summary was clicked in 1% of visits where a summary appeared. These are observed behaviors in one month of Google use, not a forecast for every query, audience, site, or search service. Pew Research Center’s study describes the methods and limits.
Broader traffic claims also vary by source and measurement scope. Google said in an August 6, 2025 post that total organic click volume from Google Search to websites was “relatively stable year-over-year,” and said average click quality had risen. That is Google’s account of its own aggregate data, without a quantified change in the cited statement. By contrast, the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism’s 2026 report, using Chartbeat aggregate data, reported Google organic referrals down 33% globally and 38% in the United States from November 2024 to November 2025. Its global series covers 2,576 sites, including 797 U.S. sites; its U.S. series covers 797 sites. The report says the portion of the decline caused by AI Overviews is unclear. The two findings have different populations, periods, and methods, so neither establishes a universal traffic outcome or a single cause. Google’s statement and the Reuters Institute report provide their respective contexts.

The practical strategy is to treat a site as both discoverable source material and a destination. A concise answer may satisfy a quick question elsewhere; original reporting, firsthand expertise, deeper explanation, useful tools, comparisons, services, and other next steps can give a visitor a reason to continue on the site. That is a strategic response to the changing path from answer to visit, not a promise that any format will earn a citation or preserve traffic.
How do I adapt my website for AI search?
Keep the technical foundations in place
For Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode, eligibility still depends on familiar Search requirements: a page must be indexed and eligible to appear with a snippet to be eligible as a supporting link. Google Search Central says its generative features are rooted in core Search ranking and quality systems. Make important pages crawlable and internally findable, present key information in accessible text, provide a good page experience, and keep structured data consistent with content people can see on the page.

Google says site owners do not need special AI markup, AI text files, or an llms.txt file to appear in its AI features. These statements concern Google Search; they do not establish the technical requirements of every other AI search product. Google’s generative AI optimization guide and its AI features documentation explain the Google-specific guidance.

Give readers value beyond a short answer
Prioritize work that a generic summary cannot easily substitute for: original reporting, direct expertise, evidence, useful analysis, and resources that help a reader complete a task. Google recommends unique, non-commodity content, but that is platform guidance—not a guarantee of ranking, a citation, or a click.
Rank #3
Design pages around the next step a visitor might need. Depending on the subject, that might be a fuller explanation, a comparison, a tool, a service, a purchase, or a way to build an ongoing direct relationship. The aim is not to make every page longer; it is to make the page useful for a real need that remains after the quick answer.
Do not mistake a proposed “AI SEO” trick for a requirement
There is no Google-required schema type, file, or wording formula that guarantees inclusion in an AI answer. Keep structured data accurate and useful for its intended Search features, rather than adding markup that does not match visible page content. Treat claims about special optimization rules for other platforms separately: Google’s documentation does not define those services’ policies.

How should I measure whether the changes are working?
Measure search exposure and business value together. A citation or impression is not the same as a visit, and a visit is not automatically a useful outcome. Google says traffic from its AI features is included in Search Console’s Web reporting and documents generative-AI performance insights. Its 2026 post describes reporting that includes impressions and page- and country-level insights.

Choose consistent date ranges and note major site or campaign changes.
- Segment the view. Where the data allows, compare landing pages, query classes, markets, and dates rather than relying only on a sitewide total. Separate search from other acquisition channels in analytics.
- Look past the click count. Check whether visits from search engage with the page or complete the action the page is meant to support. A lower visit count can have different business implications depending on the quality and outcomes of the visits that remain.
- Be cautious about attribution. Compare periods and page or query groups consistently. Do not assign a traffic change to AI features alone unless the comparison can support that conclusion; broader search changes and other factors may also affect referrals.
Google’s reporting can help assess its own Search features, but it does not provide universal measurement across other AI products. Pair it with your site’s analytics and business metrics rather than treating a single visibility figure as the result.
Should I allow Google’s generative AI features to use my site?
Google’s June 2026 post describes Search Console inclusion controls and performance insights, and says rollout of the controls to websites worldwide was complete as of August 31, 2026. Google states that sites opting out of its generative AI Search features will not receive traffic or impressions from those features. The decision is therefore a trade-off: limiting inclusion may suit a site’s policy or business constraints, but it also means giving up those Google-feature impressions and visits. These controls apply to Google’s features, not to every AI product.
Evaluate the choice against the site’s objectives and any relevant contractual or policy obligations. Use the available reporting to understand whether Google’s AI features contribute useful exposure or business outcomes; do not assume that inclusion guarantees meaningful traffic, or that opting out controls how other services use content. Google’s post on website-owner controls describes the rollout and stated trade-off.
