AI can make a romance scam look and sound more convincing, but it does not change the basic play: a stranger builds trust, then tries to get money, financial access, or help moving funds. A polished profile, persuasive messages, or a convincing voice or video call cannot prove who is behind the account. Watch what the person asks you to do, especially when affection is paired with urgency, secrecy, or a financial request.
What makes an AI-powered romance scam harder to recognize?
A romance scam uses a false online identity to gain someone’s affection and trust, then manipulates them for money or another benefit. Generative AI can help scammers create believable profile material and write messages that feel personal and emotionally persuasive. That makes deception easier to produce at scale and harder to judge by appearance or writing style alone.
The FBI says criminals use AI chat generators to create fake profiles and scripts that make their communication more believable. Its San Francisco office has also described realistic AI-generated photos, video, and voice messages. These tools can support a more tailored performance, but the underlying aim remains financial: a request for money, financial information, investment help, or access to an account.
That does not mean every scammer uses AI, or that a suspicious photo, voice message, or video is necessarily synthetic. It means those signals are not reliable proof of identity. Do not treat a video call, fluent writing, or an AI-detection tool as a dependable identity test.

What the reported losses do—and do not—show
The FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center’s 2025 report, published in 2026, says victims lost more than $19 million to confidence/romance scams with a likely AI nexus. That is a qualified figure, not a complete count of all romance fraud involving AI and not the total loss from romance scams.
For context, FBI Chicago reported that IC3 received 17,910 reports of romance scams in 2024, with reported losses of $672,009,052. Separately, IC3’s 2025 report recorded more than 22,000 AI-related complaints and more than $893 million in adjusted losses across fraud types. These figures cover different periods and populations, so they should not be compared as though they measure the same thing.
Which warning signs matter more than a convincing profile?
Look for behavior over time, particularly when a relationship quickly shifts toward isolation, urgency, or money. The FBI identifies these warning signs:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Fast emotional intensity: declarations of love or strong commitment arrive unusually early.
- Avoiding an in-person meeting: the person repeatedly cancels, makes excuses, or finds reasons they cannot meet.
- Pressure to move off the platform: they quickly want to switch to private messaging or another service.
- Secrecy or isolation: they discourage you from discussing the relationship or request with friends or family.
- Money or financial access: they ask for cash, cryptocurrency, gift cards, a wire transfer, payment through an app, account details, or help with an investment.
- Use of your account: a request to receive or transfer money through your bank account may involve using you as a money mule.
The FTC’s consumer guidance puts the key question plainly: “Did a new friend or love interest you met online suddenly ask you for money?” A sudden emergency, travel problem, medical bill, or supposed investment opportunity can be the pivot from a romantic conversation to financial fraud.

Basic checks can reveal inconsistencies or reused material, but they do not establish who controls an account. Use them alongside the person’s behavior and your own independent judgment.
Quick Recap
Best Value
- Search for reused profile material: use a reverse image search on profile photos and search distinctive phrases or biographical details. A match elsewhere can be a warning; no match does not verify the person.
- Ask questions and compare answers over time: note whether details about their background, work, location, or plans remain consistent. A coherent story is still not proof of identity.
- Keep the conversation on the platform: be cautious if the person quickly pressures you to move elsewhere, where it may be harder to use the service’s reporting tools.
- Bring in someone you trust: discuss the relationship and any request with a friend or family member. Do not accept demands to keep it secret.
- Limit what you share publicly: personal information can help someone tailor a convincing approach or exploit what they learn about you.
What to do if money enters the relationship
- Pause and do not pay. Do not send money to someone you have not met in person. Do not provide cryptocurrency, gift cards, wire transfers, payment-app transfers, financial credentials, or access to an account. Do not send intimate material or packages at their request.
- Do not let urgency make the decision for you. A real-seeming crisis or close emotional connection does not make a payment request safe. FBI San Francisco Special Agent in Charge Sanjay Virmani warned: “If someone you’ve never met in person asks you for money, cryptocurrency or investment help, it is a red flag – no matter how convincing the story or connection may seem.”
- Stop contact and report the account. Use the dating or social platform’s reporting tools, then report suspected fraud to the FTC or the FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3).
- If you already sent funds, act promptly. Contact your bank, card issuer, payment service, or cryptocurrency platform through a known official channel and ask what steps may be available. Save messages, usernames, payment details, and transaction records for your report.
