Neither category is automatically better or safer for every child. Common Sense Media advises against AI toys for children age 5 and under and urges caution for ages 6 to 12. Smart speakers can be useful for family tasks, but shared access may expose children to unsuitable content or let them control connected devices. Compare the intended use, content boundaries, microphone and data practices, and parental controls—not just the feature list.
What is the difference?
An AI toy is a physical toy, robot, or stuffed animal with AI intended for learning, companionship, or conversation, as defined by Common Sense Media. A smart speaker is a voice assistant used for tasks such as playing content or responding to household requests. Families may use one for games, audiobooks, jokes, or homework help, though capabilities and controls vary by device and service.
The distinction is partly about how a child interacts with the device: an AI toy may invite open-ended conversation or a companion-like relationship, while a speaker is often shared and used for specific household requests. Neither description guarantees how a particular product behaves.

What does the evidence say about AI toys?
Age guidance and tested concerns
Common Sense Media’s 2026 guidance says it does not recommend AI toys for children age 5 and under because of risks including emotional dependency and potentially dangerous advice; it urges caution for ages 6 to 12. This is organizational guidance, not a legal age restriction.

In its assessment of Grem, Bondu, and Miko 3, Common Sense Media reported that 27% of AI toy outputs it tested were not appropriate for kids. Its examples included self-harm, drugs, mature topics, inappropriate boundaries, risky advice, and unsafe roleplay. That figure describes the organization’s testing of those products and procedures; it is not a rate for all AI toys.
The same assessment identified privacy, safety, reliability, and emotional-attachment concerns. Those findings are product- and test-specific, not proof that every AI toy has the same problems or that every child will experience them. Common Sense Media also reported that more than 8 in 10 parents expressed concern about AI toys collecting children’s personal information; this reflects parent attitudes, not measured data misuse. Its summary said nearly half of parents had bought or considered buying AI-enabled toys or devices, which indicates interest, not market-wide sales.

What to consider about the companion design
Some AI toys are presented as conversational companions. Consider whether that framing suits your child, what the toy does when asked an unexpected question, and whether its responses encourage attachment or offer advice that should come from an adult. Common Sense Media’s assessment flags emotional attachment as a concern; it does not establish that every child will become dependent on a toy.

A smart speaker can be practical for shared entertainment and household tasks, but a child may encounter material meant for adults or gain access to functions parents did not intend. If the speaker can operate connected equipment, voice access can also matter for household safety. A 2021 qualitative parent study on smart-home use describes these risks and reports mitigations such as supervision, limiting access, and parental controls. It is not a current audit of specific speaker brands.

Common Sense Media’s smart-speaker guidance was last reviewed in 2025 and discusses family uses including games, audiobooks, jokes, and homework help. Those uses do not by themselves show that a speaker is educational or appropriate for every child. Check the current settings and service documentation for the particular device you own or are considering.
How to compare the two for your child
| What to compare | AI-powered toy | Smart speaker |
|---|---|---|
| Purpose and age | Often designed for child-led play, conversation, or companionship. Apply Common Sense Media’s age guidance: not recommended for ages 5 and under, caution for ages 6 to 12. | Often used for shared household tasks and entertainment. Suitability depends on the service, account settings, and how children can access it. |
| Content and responses | Common Sense Media’s tests of Grem, Bondu, and Miko 3 found inappropriate responses; do not assume the same result for every toy. | Shared access can expose children to unsuitable content. Check content settings and what happens when the child makes an unexpected request. |
| Privacy | Check whether it collects audio, transcripts, or behavioral data, how those data are used and stored, and whether a parent can review or delete them. | Ask the same questions about audio, transcripts, and usage information, including what the account retains and how to remove it. |
| Controls and access | Look for child-account settings, content limits, microphone controls, and restrictions on messaging or purchases. | Check child profiles and content limits, and whether the speaker can make purchases, send messages, or control connected devices. |
| Reliability and value | Common Sense Media reported reliability problems in the AI toys it tested. The evidence here does not establish a general comparison of educational value. | No head-to-head developmental study establishes that smart speakers are more educational than AI toys, or vice versa. |
There is no direct head-to-head developmental study in the available evidence establishing one category as safer or more educational overall. Treat the comparison as a decision about a specific child, product, and household setup—not a category-wide verdict.

Questions to ask before buying or setting up either device
- Does it have a microphone or camera, and when is each active?
- What audio, transcripts, or usage information does it collect? Where is it stored, who can access it, and how is it shared?
- Can a parent review and delete collected data? What settings apply by default?
- Can the child make purchases, send messages, use broad searches, or control other connected equipment?
- Can you set a child profile, restrict content, or disable the microphone or other functions?
- How does the device respond to unexpected questions, and what does it do when it cannot understand a request?
These checks reflect the FTC’s consumer and children’s privacy guidance. For a smart speaker, also consider whether it needs access to locks, garage doors, heaters, or other consequential equipment. Configure only the access the child needs, supervise younger children, and set household expectations for when and how the device may be used. Specific controls differ by device and service, so verify them in current manufacturer documentation.
What COPPA means for connected toys and speakers
The FTC says connected toys, smart speakers, and voice assistants can be online services covered by the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA). Its FAQ lists those types of services, but whether COPPA applies depends on the particular operator, audience, and data practices; the device category alone does not determine compliance.

COPPA concerns covered operators’ online collection of personal information from children under 13. FTC guidance says covered companies must provide privacy information, obtain parental consent where required, protect collected data, and give parents deletion rights. This is general U.S. context, not legal advice or a finding that any particular product complies with or violates the law. For a broader child-centered framework, UNICEF’s guidance on AI for children emphasizes safety, data and privacy protection, and children’s best interests, development, and well-being.
