There is no evidence here to name one AI toy as the best buy. Before choosing one, check what it can hear and store, how it handles children’s questions, what parents can control, and whether its play and design suit your child—not just its AI features.
What should you check before buying an AI toy?
Start with the product’s actual features and policies. The label “AI-powered” does not tell you whether a toy records conversations, how it responds to sensitive topics, or whether a parent can review and delete information. Compare products against the same questions rather than relying on a general claim that a toy is educational or safe.
- Age and developmental fit: Is the toy intended for your child’s age, interests, abilities, and conversational maturity?
- Microphone and camera behavior: Does it have a microphone or camera? How can you tell when either is active?
- Data practices: What does it collect, where is information stored, who can access it, whether it is shared, how long it is retained, and whether parents can inspect and delete it?
- Content safeguards: How does it respond to sensitive subjects or questions it cannot answer reliably?
- Recognition and answer reliability: Can it understand a child’s speech, and what happens when it misunderstands or gives a wrong answer?
- Parent oversight: What setup steps, default settings, and controls are available to adults?
- Play without dependency: Does the toy support open-ended play and learning without making a child feel that the device is a real friend who needs them?
These checks reflect the issues examined in Common Sense Media’s assessment of three conversational toys—Grem, Bondu, and Miko 3—and the questions raised by consumer-protection and child-centered AI guidance. That assessment concerns voice-interacting, internet-connected products; it does not establish that every electronic or screen-based learning toy has the same features or risks. Common Sense Media’s AI toy assessment
What should parents ask about listening and data?
Read the toy’s privacy information and setup instructions before giving it to a child. Look for direct answers, not broad assurances such as “secure” or “designed for families.” The FTC’s guidance for connected toys suggests asking whether a device has microphones or cameras, when they are active, what information it collects, where that information is stored, how it is shared, who can access it, and whether parents can inspect and delete it. Also check whether an account, app, internet connection, or other setup is required, and what the default settings permit. FTC guidance on connected toys

In the United States, COPPA may require covered operators collecting personal information from children under 13 to disclose their privacy practices, obtain parental consent, secure the information, and provide deletion rights. Whether COPPA applies to a particular toy or service depends on the facts and the operator; the FTC’s material is consumer guidance, not a determination about any specific product. Consult current FTC information for legal interpretation.
How should you judge a toy that acts like a companion?
Ask what the toy’s conversational design encourages a child to believe and do. Common Sense Media reported that the three products it assessed included features intended to encourage emotional attachment, and raised concerns about young children confusing AI with real people. Those findings apply to the products and age groups evaluated; they do not establish a universal effect for every toy marketed as AI-powered. Read the assessment’s scope and findings

Consider whether the toy clearly presents itself as a device, whether it can make emotionally pressuring statements, and whether the child can enjoy it without treating it as a substitute for human relationships. UNICEF’s child-centered guidance covers safety, privacy, fairness, transparency, accountability, development, well-being, inclusion, and preparing children for AI. It also recognizes potential learning and accessibility benefits, including for children with disabilities; those are possibilities, not proof that a particular toy delivers them. Does the toy suit your child’s age and physical abilities?
Check the package’s age guidance and safety information, then consider the child’s interests and abilities. Age suitability is not only about whether a child can use an app or hold a conversation with the toy; it also includes physical hazards. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission advises keeping small balls and toys with small parts away from children under three, and says toys with choking hazards for children under three must have age labels. Follow the product packaging and CPSC guidance when assessing a specific toy. CPSC toy safety guidance
What can current product assessments tell you?
Common Sense Media assessed Grem, Bondu, and Miko 3 as internet-connected, voice-interacting toys positioned as educational tools and companions. Its review examined response reliability, content safety, developmental fit, privacy practices, attachment risks, and parent oversight. That is useful evidence for deciding what to investigate, but it is not a product-wide certification or a basis for declaring a winner among all AI toys.

Before buying any named model, verify its current version, age label, privacy terms, recording indicators and controls, and any applicable safety notices or recalls. Product features and policies can change, and an assessment of a particular version does not independently validate every vendor claim or establish current marketplace availability.
What is changing in toy-safety policy?
On 6 July 2026, the UK Department for Business and Trade and the Office for Product Safety and Standards announced a call for evidence on toy-safety rules and emerging risks, including AI-enabled toys. The announcement said the call would remain open until 6 October 2026. As of 4 October 2026, that closing date was still upcoming; the announcement describes a policy review, not a new rule already in force. UK government announcement on its toy-safety review
