The Wesleyan Media Project (WMP) identified at least 164 political ads made or enhanced with AI and estimated their spending at just under $80 million in its September 4, 2026 snapshot. Most of the ads and most of the estimated spending had no disclaimer disclosing AI use: 69% of ads and 78% of spending. These are documented minimums, not a count of every AI-assisted campaign ad.
What does the $80 million figure count?
WMP’s September 4, 2026 release counted at least 164 unique political ads that it identified as AI-generated or AI-enhanced. The ads appeared on broadcast television, connected TV (CTV) and digital venues. WMP estimated that spending on them was just under $80 million, using AdImpact estimates for each identified ad. Wesleyan Media Project’s release is the source for this dated snapshot.
The figure describes the spending associated with ads on WMP’s list—not the total amount campaigns spent using AI. It is also an estimate, rather than a direct tally of every campaign’s costs. A later article by three researchers described the cycle total as about $80 million across “almost 170” unique ads; that is rounded wording, not a replacement for WMP’s more precise September count. The researchers’ October 5, 2026 article gives examples and discusses disclosure and state-law context.

The count grew over time: WMP’s initial May 2026 report identified 33 ads with about $20 million in spending. The May and September figures are snapshots taken at different points in the project’s tracking, not competing final totals.

How did WMP identify ads and estimate spending?
WMP added an ad to its list when it met one of three criteria:
- The ad’s disclaimer explicitly said AI had been used.
- News media or AdImpact reported that the ad was AI-generated or AI-enhanced.
- WMP coding staff flagged it as likely to incorporate AI, and the project team confirmed it.
WMP said its goal was to assess known prevalence over time. AdImpact supplied the spending estimates for ads on the list. Because some AI use can be difficult to detect, and not every ad carries a disclosure, the method can miss ads. WMP called its tracking “undoubtedly an underestimate.”

How much was disclosed, and who sponsored the identified ads?
WMP’s percentages describe the ads and estimated spending in its identified set. They do not establish the disclosure or sponsorship pattern for every political ad that used AI.

The ad and spending shares are different measures: a group’s share of spending need not match its share of ads. The remaining sponsor shares are not specified in WMP’s reported figures above.

What counted as an AI political ad?
The tracking included both generated material and AI enhancement. That distinction matters: “AI political ad” does not mean every listed ad depicted a fabricated event or impersonated a politician. Some uses may be visually obvious, while enhancement can be subtler and difficult to distinguish from conventional editing.
The researchers describe examples including a Republican Louisiana Senate candidate driving a school bus full of undocumented immigrants; a South Carolina Republican gubernatorial candidate walking arm in arm with drag queens; and an ad depicting Liz Cheney, Mitt Romney and Mike Pence with pitchforks at the White House. They also discuss a fake Dr. Anthony Fauci, generated crowds and hyperrealistic depictions of political figures. These are examples from the researchers’ account, not a complete inventory of the 164 ads.

Are political ads required to disclose AI use?
The sources describe a patchwork of state laws, not a single federal requirement mandating disclosure of AI use in political ads. The researchers compared ads in states with and without AI political-ad laws: 29% of ads in states with such laws carried disclaimers, compared with 32% in states without them.
Those percentages do not show whether laws caused or failed to cause disclosure. The researchers caution that the comparison is imperfect: some sampled ads may not have been covered by the relevant state law, and some laws took effect only after an ad aired. They also note that a law may cover only a narrow category of AI content. Colorado, for example, is described as applying to candidate deepfakes rather than every use of AI in political advertising.

The researchers also discuss a synthetic-video ad involving Minnesota Democratic Senate candidate Peggy Flanagan that aired in May 2026. They say whether it violated Minnesota law was uncertain, turning in part on the law’s realism threshold. The example is not a finding that the ad broke the law. These observations are not a full, current state-by-state legal inventory or legal advice.
Why the numbers are a minimum, not a census
WMP’s list depends on ads being disclosed, reported or identified through project coding. AI use that leaves no clear visual clue or public report may go undetected, and the project explicitly says its tally is an underestimate. The September figures therefore show what the project had identified by that date—not every AI-generated or AI-enhanced political ad, nor the full amount spent on AI in campaigning.
