You can search photos on an iPhone with the built-in Photos app, and you may also be able to use Google Photos’ conversational Ask Photos feature. They are not one universal AI search tool: Apple Intelligence adds natural-language search to Photos on eligible iPhones, while Google Photos offers classic search and a separate, optional experimental feature. Which is useful depends on what you want to find, where those photos are stored, and whether the feature is available to your account or device.
How do I search my photos with AI?
On an eligible iPhone, open Photos and use its search field to describe the picture or video moment you want. Apple says Apple Intelligence can help find a specific photo or a key moment in a video using a natural-language description. The Photos app also offers regular search suggestions, including dates, locations, and people you have named. Apple’s iPhone Photos search guide and Apple Intelligence in Photos describe these options.

In Google Photos, use classic search for people, things, places, albums, and other collections. If Ask Photos is available for your account and you opt in, you can ask conversational questions, request summaries, and ask follow-ups. Google’s examples include finding photos that might work as a phone background or recalling food from a trip. Ask Photos is an additional experience, not a replacement name for all Google Photos search.

These descriptions explain documented capabilities, not comparative accuracy. Neither feature should be treated as a guarantee that a search will interpret every description correctly.

What can each search find?
| Search option | Documented ways to search | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone Photos, including Apple Intelligence | Standard suggestions for dates, locations, and named people; natural-language descriptions to locate specific photos and key moments in videos. | Apple Intelligence requires an eligible device and supported language and region. |
| Google Photos classic search | People, things, places, albums, and other organized collections. | Classic search is distinct from Ask Photos’ conversational questions. |
| Google Photos Ask Photos | Conversational searches, summaries, and follow-up questions, including more complex requests. | Google calls it experimental and cautions that results may be unexpected or inaccurate. |
Apple’s feature is search inside the iPhone Photos app, not a separate photo-search app. Google Photos also has classic search whether or not Ask Photos is available to you.
Is Google Photos search better than iPhone Photos?
There is no documented basis here for naming an overall winner. Apple describes natural-language search for photos and video moments; Google documents classic category-based search and Ask Photos’ conversational questions and summaries. These are different capabilities, and feature examples do not establish that one service is faster or more accurate.

Choose based on the task and the library you want to search. If you want to describe a scene or locate a moment in a video on an eligible iPhone, try Photos’ Apple Intelligence search. If your images are in Google Photos, classic search can locate familiar categories, while Ask Photos may suit broader questions or follow-ups if you have access. Google explicitly warns that Ask Photos can give unexpected or inaccurate results, so use its responses to locate candidate images rather than as a definitive account of a memory.
Why don’t I have Apple Intelligence or Ask Photos?
Apple Intelligence in Photos
Apple Intelligence is not available on every iPhone. Apple lists compatible models as well as language and region requirements, and those conditions can change. Check Apple’s current Apple Intelligence requirements for your device and settings; do not assume a particular iPhone model qualifies without checking.

Ask Photos in Google Photos
Google says Ask Photos is rolling out selectively, so availability can depend on your location and Google account eligibility. It also requires opting in, and Google documents mobile access for the feature. If you do not see it, check Google’s current Ask Photos availability and setup guidance for eligibility and opt-in details; access may not be available to every Google Photos user.
Check which photo library you are searching
Search only helps with images in the library that the feature can access. Google says Ask Photos can be used with backed-up images; asking about an individual selected photo requires that photo to be backed up. If a picture is missing from results, first confirm whether it is in iPhone Photos or Google Photos and, for an individual Ask Photos question, whether it has been backed up. Do not assume either service searches every image in both libraries.

Google Photos privacy controls and uncertainty
Google documents controls for turning off Ask Photos and disabling query review. Google says voice recordings used for searching are not stored. Separately, it says Ask Photos queries may be reviewed after privacy-protective steps unless you turn off that setting. These are specific statements about documented controls; they do not establish a like-for-like privacy comparison with Apple.
