AI model weights are learned numerical values that help determine how a model turns input into output. In a neural network, a weight scales an input or feature as part of a computation. Training adjusts weights to improve predictions; inference uses the learned values to make them. Weights are only part of a model: its architecture and software determine how those values are used.

What does an AI model weight do?

A weight controls how strongly an input contributes to a model’s calculation. In a simple linear model, the output can be written as:

y' = b + w1*x1 + w2*x2

Here, x1 and x2 are input features, w1 and w2 are their weights, and b is a bias. Each weight multiplies its corresponding feature; the bias adds an offset.

For illustration, Google for Developers uses a bias of 2.2, weights of 1.5 and 0.4, and feature values of 6 and 10. The calculation is 2.2 + (1.5 × 6) + (0.4 × 10) = 15.2. These are example values, not a general measurement of AI models. See Google’s definition of a weight.

How are weights different from parameters, biases, and architecture?

  • Weight: A learned value that multiplies another value in a model.
  • Bias: A learned offset or intercept. Neural networks often store biases alongside weights.
  • Parameter: The broader category of values learned by a model. Weights and biases are examples of parameters.
  • Architecture: The model’s computational structure: the arrangement of layers and operations that determines how it processes values.

A model is not just its weights. It also needs a structure that specifies how computations are arranged. For a language model, its configuration can describe attributes such as layer count, vocabulary size, and activation function; modeling code defines the layers and operations that use the stored values. Google’s glossary definition of a model describes it in terms of both parameters and structure.

What happens to weights during training and inference?

Training adjusts learned values

Training uses examples to determine useful parameter values. In a neural-network training process, the model’s parameters are adjusted so its predictions improve according to the training objective. A standard fine-tuning process updates all parameters; parameter-efficient fine-tuning updates only a subset.

Inference applies the learned values

Inference is when a trained model processes an input and produces a prediction or response using its learned parameters. Ordinary use of a model does not, by itself, change those parameters.

A prompt steers output without changing weights

A prompt supplies instructions or context that influence the response. It can change what the model produces without changing its underlying weights. Fine-tuning is different: it is additional training that changes some or all parameters. Google’s overview of fine-tuning and prompt engineering distinguishes these approaches.

What is a checkpoint, and what is a PyTorch state_dict?

A checkpoint stores weights associated with a particular architecture. A checkpoint file may also include configuration or other state; the weights alone do not specify the full model implementation.

In PyTorch, a module’s state_dict maps layers to tensors holding parameters. It can also include registered buffers, such as batch-normalization running means, so not every entry is necessarily a learned weight. An optimizer has a separate state_dict for its own state and hyperparameters. PyTorch explains this in its state_dict guide.

Loading a checkpoint means loading compatible stored values into a model class whose architecture and configuration describe how to use them. Hugging Face’s Transformers v4.50.0 model-loading documentation describes this relationship and its version-specific loading behavior. It notes that the loader uses safetensors when available and characterizes that format as more secure and faster to load than pickle serialization. That documentation comparison does not mean every model file is safe to load; use care with files from untrusted sources.

What does “open weights” mean?

“Open weights” generally means the model’s weights are available. That availability does not establish that the training data, source code, training recipe, or evaluation materials are also released. Nor does it guarantee that every use is allowed: check the specific release and its license.

When considering an open-weight model, examine what files and documentation are actually available, the terms of its license, and whether it fits your task and deployment environment. Visibility, customization, cost, and performance can all matter; organizations may also choose different models for different tasks or combine open-weight and proprietary approaches. NVIDIA uses “open weights” to describe releases where weights are available but other model materials may not be; treat that as the company’s terminology, not a universal legal definition. See NVIDIA’s overview of open models.
