The right choice depends on the job. Use a comparison arena or leaderboard when you need to judge answers side by side; use a model directory when you are researching specifications and prices; use a multi-provider router when you want one API that can reach several providers; and use a provider directly when you have selected a model and need the clearest account, privacy, billing and operational control.
These products overlap, but they are not interchangeable. A leaderboard is an evaluation method, a directory is a discovery surface, a router is an integration and routing layer, and direct access is an endpoint relationship with the company hosting the model. Decide which of those functions you actually need before comparing plans or model names.
Start with the outcome you need
“AI provider” and “comparison platform” describe different jobs. The OECD defines an AI provider as “A company that hosts and provides access to one or more model endpoints via an API.” Direct access therefore means your application or account connects to an endpoint operated by that provider. A comparison platform may instead collect outputs, display specifications, or send requests through an intermediary.

Choose an arena, playground or evaluation tool that can submit the same prompt to multiple models and show the responses together. This is useful for judging tone, reasoning steps, coding style, citation behavior and failure modes. It is not automatically a production endpoint, a price calculator or a privacy guarantee.

You need to browse models, prices or context limits
A directory is the fastest way to make a shortlist. It can put creator, release date, input and output rates, context or token limits and model details in one view. Treat every figure as a discovery aid: model aliases, availability and rates can change, so confirm the final choice with the provider that will actually receive your requests.
You need to experiment interactively
A hosted chat or testing surface reduces setup. You can adjust a system prompt, temperature or tool configuration and compare several responses before writing code. The convenience may come with an account-level data policy, usage allowance or intermediary routing that differs from a direct API account.
You need a production integration
Begin with the endpoint, authentication, rate limits, support terms and data-processing requirements. Direct provider access gives the most explicit relationship with the service. A router can be appropriate when failover, model switching or a common API matters more than having one provider account, but you must understand which underlying provider receives each request.
The four surfaces people commonly confuse
Comparison arenas and leaderboards
An arena measures responses under a particular protocol. The Chatbot Arena paper describes crowdsourced pairwise comparison: participants see two answers and indicate which they prefer. The resulting preference signal can help identify broadly strong models, but it does not measure every capability, price per token, privacy term, uptime or success on your own workload. A model that ranks highly on general prompts may still mishandle your codebase, legal language or structured output.
Use an arena as one evidence input. For an important decision, add a private test set made from representative tasks and score the outputs against criteria your team can explain.
Model directories
A directory is an index rather than a neutral test laboratory. The Ramp Router model directory, shown as updated October 7, 2026, lists creators, release dates, input and output prices per million tokens, token limits, model details and comparison controls. Visible examples include GPT-6.1 Sol, dated September 29, 2026, at USD 2.00 per 1 million input tokens and USD 10.00 per 1 million output tokens, and Claude Sonnet 5.5, dated September 28, 2026, at the same displayed rates. Those are point-in-time entries in that directory, not independently verified provider prices. Check the official provider page before budgeting or promising a capability.

Routers and multi-provider API layers
A router gives an application one interface while it forwards requests to one of several model or provider endpoints. Depending on the service, you may be able to pin a provider, specify fallbacks, use bring-your-own-key (BYOK), or let the router choose a route. This can reduce integration work and make model experiments faster, but it adds another policy, billing and availability layer.
OpenRouter’s provider directory illustrates why “the model” and “the route” are separate decisions. Its visible page lists 92 providers and fields for training, retention, BYOK, headquarters, terms, privacy policy, usage totals and model count. Rows show materially different labels, including “Zero retention,” “30 days retention” and “Retains prompts.” Read the linked policy for the provider that will receive sensitive data; a directory label is a starting point, not a contract review.
Direct provider access
With direct access, you create an account or project with the company hosting the endpoint, obtain its API credentials, and send requests to its documented API. You normally get the provider’s own model identifiers, rate limits, logging controls, support channels and billing records. Switching providers later may require code changes, but you avoid an intermediary’s markup and routing behavior unless the provider itself uses another service for a feature.

How to judge quality without overtrusting a ranking
Quality evidence comes in several forms, and each answers a different question:
- Crowdsourced preference: pairwise human votes reveal which answer people preferred in the arena’s prompts and participation conditions.
- Published benchmarks: a fixed test set can measure a defined capability, but benchmark contamination, prompt format and scoring rules affect the result.
- Vendor claims: a provider may report improvements using its own tests; treat methodology and comparability as questions to verify.
- Your evaluation set: representative prompts, expected outputs and failure categories provide the strongest evidence for your actual job.
Keep the model, provider route and generation settings visible in your test record. The same model name can behave differently when a router selects a different provider, applies a different context limit or changes a system wrapper. Test deterministic tasks with fixed settings where possible, and include adversarial or incomplete inputs that expose refusal, hallucination, tool-use and formatting failures.
A practical scoring sheet
For each response, record a pass or score for correctness, completeness, instruction following, format validity, citation or source handling, latency and failure recovery. Add a severity label: a minor style defect is not equivalent to an incorrect financial calculation or a leaked secret. Have at least two people review high-impact examples, because a single preference vote is noisy.

Compare the real cost, not just the displayed token rate
Calculate cost for the route you will actually use. Include input tokens, output tokens, cached or discounted tokens when applicable, currency conversion, subscription or credit allowances, router fees, BYOK charges and the cost of retries or fallbacks. A lower per-token number can lose its advantage if the model needs longer prompts, produces more output or fails often enough to require another call.
Questions to put in your cost worksheet
- What are the current input and output rates for the exact model version?
- Are rates different for cached, batch, priority or long-context requests?
- Does the platform add a markup, subscription charge or minimum commitment?
- Which company bills the request, and in what currency?
- What is your monthly input/output token mix, including retries and tool calls?
- Are included credits temporary, plan-specific or limited to an evaluation feature?
OpenRouter’s pricing page states that standard and business BYOK users receive USD 25,000 of list-price inference per month with no fees, followed by a 5% fee. That is a current plan statement accessed October 13, 2026, not a permanent benchmark; verify the live terms before relying on it. Compare the same model and provider route under the same token workload when deciding between direct billing and a router.
Why directory prices need confirmation
A directory may normalize prices into “per million tokens,” round values or retain an entry after a provider changes a rate. It may also show a model that is unavailable in your region or account tier. Use the listing to find candidates, then copy the provider’s current rate conditions into your worksheet with the date and model identifier.
Privacy and data handling follow the route
Ask which company receives the prompt, how long it retains request and response data, whether content is used for training, where processing occurs, and which account setting or contract controls those practices. Also check logs, abuse-monitoring exceptions, deletion procedures, subprocessors, encryption and enterprise data-processing terms when your workload contains personal, confidential or regulated information.
A router can expose several provider choices, but it does not erase their differences. OpenRouter’s directory shows separate provider fields for retention, BYOK, terms, privacy and available model count. Select the actual provider deliberately, pin it when the service permits, and retain a record of the applicable policy version. If the router can change providers automatically, determine whether a fallback would send data to a company with different retention or geographic terms.
Interactive comparison tools deserve the same scrutiny. A prompt entered into a hosted playground may be logged under that product’s account policy even when the underlying model is also available through a direct API. Do not paste production secrets into a comparison experiment merely because the interface is convenient.

Reliability, routing and version control
Model identity
Pin an explicit model identifier or version when reproducibility matters. Friendly aliases can move to a newer checkpoint, change context limits or alter tool behavior. Store the identifier, provider, route, system prompt and relevant generation settings alongside your evaluation result.

Direct access means you monitor one provider’s status, quotas and rate limits. A router can offer a fallback when a model or region is unavailable, but the fallback may produce different quality, latency, price or privacy outcomes. Define which failures justify a retry, which permit a fallback, and which must stop the workflow for human review.
Observability
Production logs should capture request ID, model and provider route, latency, token counts, status code, retry count and a privacy-safe outcome. A router’s aggregate dashboard may not expose every provider-level detail, so confirm that you can export the information needed for incident analysis and billing reconciliation.
Integration and support trade-offs
Compare more than API syntax. Check authentication scope, project separation, tool and multimodal support, streaming behavior, structured-output guarantees, file handling, maximum context, rate-limit increase procedures, regional availability, service-level commitments and support escalation.
- Direct provider: clearest documentation and billing ownership; usually the fewest moving parts, but switching models or vendors can require adapter code.
- Router: one integration and easier experimentation across providers; requires testing route selection, error translation, provider-specific features and intermediary support.
- Directory or arena: excellent for discovery and human review; generally not a substitute for production authentication, monitoring or contractual support.
Design an internal adapter even when you start direct. Keep prompts, schemas and retry logic separate from provider-specific SDK calls. That preserves a future switching option without pretending that all models support identical tools or output semantics.

A repeatable comparison procedure
- Define the decision. Write whether you are choosing a model for quality, estimating cost, validating privacy, reducing latency or selecting an integration route. A single score cannot answer all five.
- Shortlist two or three candidates. Use a directory or arena to find plausible models. Record model ID, creator, release date, context limit, displayed rates and the date you collected them.
- Build a representative test set. Include normal requests, edge cases, long context, malformed input, required formats and known failure traps. Remove secrets and unnecessary personal data.
- Hold conditions constant. Send equivalent prompts with the same system instructions, generation settings, tool definitions and output limits. Note whether each request went directly to a provider or through a named router and provider.
- Score useful outcomes. Measure correctness, completeness, format validity, safety behavior, latency and recovery from errors. Keep written examples of failures rather than relying only on an average score.
- Measure the bill. Use actual token counts and the route’s current rates, fees, credits and retry behavior. Project a realistic monthly workload instead of multiplying a headline rate by an arbitrary token count.
- Review data terms. Identify every company receiving prompts, retention and training rules, processing geography, BYOK behavior and deletion controls. Escalate sensitive use to a contractual review.
- Test operational failure. Exercise rate limits, timeouts, malformed responses, provider outages and fallback behavior. Confirm that your application can pin or reject an unexpected route.
- Choose and document. Record why the selected route met the quality, cost, privacy, reliability and support thresholds. Set a review date for prices, model versions and policies.
When each approach is the better fit
Researcher comparing writing or reasoning styles
Start with a comparison arena or interactive surface, then run a private test set. Use the arena to discover broad differences and your own prompts to decide. Do not infer that the winner’s rank settles your application’s accuracy or cost.

Developer prototyping several APIs
A router can shorten the time needed to swap models and centralize request code. Pin providers for controlled tests, keep direct provider credentials and policies documented, and avoid relying on a router feature that has no equivalent in your eventual production route.
Team choosing a production model
Use directories and benchmarks only to create the shortlist. Evaluate through the intended production route, calculate a token-based bill, negotiate or review support and data terms, and test the exact model version before rollout.
Organization with strict data residency or retention rules
Begin with provider and contract requirements, not a leaderboard. Eliminate routes that cannot document geography, retention, training use and subprocessors. A convenient router is acceptable only if its own terms and selected provider satisfy those controls.

OpenAI Evals and third-party models: a dated exception
OpenAI’s API documentation says it supports third-party models without an API key and custom endpoints with an API key, and that third-party models are served through its partner, OpenRouter. The documented Evals arrangement lists monthly inference limits of USD 25 for Build, USD 100 for Launch and USD 200 for Grow usage tiers. Future third-party model use is described as regular OpenAI billing at OpenRouter list prices.
The same documentation says Evals becomes read-only on October 31, 2026 and is scheduled to shut down on November 30, 2026. Those dates were published October 13, 2026 and are near-term product changes. Do not make Evals the foundation of a durable workflow without checking the current documentation and migration options immediately before implementation.
Verify these details before committing
- Exact model version, release status and context or token limit.
- Current input, output and special-rate conditions, including currency and billing unit.
- Who receives prompts on every route, including automatic fallbacks.
- Retention, training use, geography, subprocessors and deletion terms.
- Whether the provider or router can pin a model and provider.
- Rate limits, outage behavior, retries, streaming and structured-output support.
- Support channel, escalation path, enterprise controls and any service-level commitment.
- Whether a directory figure, plan allowance or product date is a point-in-time statement that may have changed.
The durable choice is conditional: comparison surfaces are best for exploration and human evaluation; direct provider access is best once you value explicit account and endpoint control; routers are useful when provider flexibility and a common integration outweigh the additional policy and routing layer. Make the final decision from your own workload, measured route and documented terms rather than from a leaderboard position or a single displayed price.
