AI skincare tools can turn a phone selfie into cosmetic skin scores, routine suggestions, or product recommendations. They can offer a convenient way to notice visible concerns, but a score is not a medical diagnosis—and a polished result does not prove that the tool is accurate, private, or independent.

What an AI skincare selfie tool does

These services analyze a face photo and return assessments of visible characteristics, such as tone, texture, or wrinkles. Depending on the tool, they may also suggest skincare ingredients, routines, or products. They are consumer-facing features, not a single standardized type of test.

For example, Neutrogena Skin360’s U.S. page says a selfie scan produces scores across six attributes and offers ingredient, tip, and product suggestions. Neutrogena also says its system evaluates more than 150 multidimensional facial biomarkers and 15 skin metrics and was trained on over 3 million data points. These are company descriptions, not independent proof that the scores are accurate. The service requires a mobile phone, and its page says results may be emailed. Neutrogena Skin360

L’Oréal Paris Skin Genius says it compares a selfie with clinically graded faces, returns scores for eight attributes, and selects routine suggestions from its product range. L’Oréal claims “Up to 95% accurate compared with a live dermatologist consultation.” That is the company’s performance claim; it should not be read as independently verified accuracy for every user, phone, or condition. A cosmetic score is not a diagnosis

A selfie-based cosmetic assessment can help someone notice or track visible features, but it cannot establish whether a spot, rash, or other change is harmless or medically significant. The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) advises consumers not to rely on apps to diagnose skin disease. It warns that inaccurate results can delay care and describes studies in which some melanoma apps missed cases and symptom checkers misdiagnosed rashes. AAD consumer guidance

If a skin change is concerning, persistent, or getting worse, contact a qualified clinician rather than using an app’s score to rule out a problem. The AAD’s examples concern health and diagnostic apps; they do not establish the performance of every cosmetic selfie tool.

Regulatory status also depends on what a software feature is intended to do and the risks it presents. The FDA gives an example of a mobile app using a built-in or connected camera to document or transmit skin-lesion or wound images to support communication between health professionals and patients. That example does not mean a cosmetic score is a medical diagnosis, or that all selfie tools have the same regulatory status. FDA guidance on software functions and mobile medical apps

What validation figures do—and don’t—show

A large image collection or a numerical accuracy claim may sound reassuring, but the figure alone does not tell you how performance was measured, which conditions were tested, or whether the test population resembles you. It also does not show that results will hold across different skin tones, ages, cameras, or lighting.

These remain company claims; the percentage alone does not specify how results vary across users or conditions. L’Oréal Paris Skin Genius
  • Neutrogena Skin360 U.S.: The brand’s claim of more than 3 million data points describes its training data; it does not, by itself, establish accuracy. Neutrogena Skin360

The European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology (EADV) says developers should disclose accuracy, intended use, data quality, privacy, and costs, and verify performance in relevant populations. A tool may not generalize to people or devices outside the population and equipment on which it was evaluated. Its position statement also cautions that results should be consistent for diverse groups. EADV position statement

A 2024 cross-sectional study of AI-feature dermatology apps identified 909 app-store listings, removed 518 duplicates, and assessed 41 apps in detail. The authors reported that none of those 41 apps were FDA-approved and found gaps in supporting evidence, clinician input, algorithm transparency, and privacy disclosure. This was a study of its defined sample, not a census of every skincare selfie service now available. Study record

Check image handling before uploading a face photo

Privacy practices vary by service and region, so do not assume one brand’s policy applies to another country or tool. Check the current privacy notice and consent flow before taking a scan, especially for where the image is processed, when it is deleted, and whether information may be used for recommendations, service improvement, research, or advertising.

Neutrogena Canada says its Skin360 scan uses three selfies and that facial images are deleted immediately after processing. That is a Canada-specific disclosure, not a guarantee about the U.S. service or every market. Neutrogena Canada

Read recommendations with the business model in mind

Some selfie tools turn analysis directly into product or routine suggestions. That may be useful if you want ideas from a particular brand, but it is not the same as an independent assessment of all available products. Before acting on a recommendation, check whether suggestions are limited to the operator’s range, sponsored, or otherwise commercially influenced.

The EADV warns that skincare companies may use smartphone apps to recommend their own products. Its position statement says: “Consumers should remain vigilant about potential non-medical influence from skincare corporations, as they may provide recommendations for their products through smartphone applications.” EADV position statement

A recommendation is best treated as a starting point for exploring a cosmetic routine, not evidence that a specific product is necessary or medically appropriate.

How to compare selfie skincare tools

Compare the tool’s purpose and evidence—not how precise its score looks. Useful questions include:

  • Purpose: Does the service describe itself as cosmetic education and routine guidance, or does it claim to assess a medical condition?
  • Validation: Is there a published evaluation? What reference standard was used, and are sensitivity or specificity reported where relevant?
  • Representation and capture: Were people with a range of skin tones and ages, and a range of phones, cameras, and lighting conditions, included in testing?
  • Privacy: What images and other information are collected, where are they processed, how long are they retained, and are they used for model improvement or advertising? How is consent obtained?
  • Commercial design: Are recommendations paid placements, limited to the operator’s brand, or accompanied by disclosures about commercial ties?
  • Practical access: Is there a fee or account requirement, what information must you provide, and is the service available in your country?

These questions reflect EADV’s recommendations for transparency around intended use, accuracy, data quality, privacy, and costs. A service’s answers—and its terms—can change, so check the current version before using it.
