HCA Healthcare’s Timpani scheduling software is at the center of a dispute over nurses’ work schedules and patient-care concerns. Nurses interviewed by WIRED say the tool has overridden preferences and contributed to exhausting or poorly balanced shifts. HCA says nursing leaders make the final scheduling decisions and disputes that Timpani is designed to reduce staffing at the expense of care. The accounts raise questions about how algorithmic scheduling is used; they do not establish that Timpani caused patient harm.
What Timpani does—and where HCA has deployed it
WIRED reported on October 2, 2026, that HCA began rolling out Timpani in 2023 and had introduced it at roughly 130 of its 190 locations. The report describes it as a nurse-scheduling tool co-developed by HCA and Palantir, built on Palantir Foundry. It uses algorithmic forecasts of patient volume and staffing needs to generate nursing schedules. The deployment figure and system description are reported by WIRED; the available account does not include an independent technical description or deployment audit. WIRED’s report
HCA executive Michael Schlosser described intended benefits including less time spent by managers building schedules, reduced reliance on contract nurses, and improved retention. WIRED also reported Schlosser’s assertion that more than 98 percent of schedules “include a mix of skill and experiences.” That is a company executive’s claim, not an independently validated measure of scheduling quality or results.

Requested shifts and days off
Amber Retzloff, a Florida critical-care nurse and National Nurses United labor leader, told WIRED that more than half of 50 requested 12-hour shifts over four months were assigned differently than she had requested. She said the resulting schedule included three consecutive workdays and left her mentally drained. Her account describes one nurse’s experience during that period; it is not a system-wide audit.

Other nurses interviewed by WIRED said schedules could disregard preferences about spacing shifts, nights, weekends, and days off, leading some workers to pursue shift trades or appeals with less notice. HCA, by contrast, said Timpani schedules nurses for an average of 1 percent of requested days off. A nurse quoted in the report said assignment on a requested day off had previously been unheard of at that facility. The company’s average does not establish how often an individual nurse’s requests are affected or how disruptive those instances are.
Staffing levels and experience mix
Some nurses told WIRED that shifts could have too few experienced nurses. One described being the only senior nurse among four colleagues and delaying care for the sickest patients while helping junior colleagues. That is an account of a particular shift, not independent evidence that a patient was injured or that the scheduling system caused a clinical outcome.

The concerns are about more than whether a preferred day off is honored. Nurses connect staffing quantity, experience mix, schedule predictability, and fatigue to their ability to provide care. Those are serious workplace and safety concerns, but the interviews do not establish how frequently the described conditions occur across HCA facilities.

HCA spokesperson Harlow Sumerford said that “nursing leaders, not Timpani, make final scheduling decisions.” He disputed the assertion that the tool is designed to reduce staffing at the expense of care, and said HCA aims to match caregivers’ skills and experience to patient needs while considering preferences. He also said HCA is working to improve Timpani based on employee feedback.

That response places human leaders in the formal decision-making role, but the reported disagreement is also about the tool’s influence on the schedules those leaders review and the practical burden of correcting them. The available reporting does not provide raw scheduling data or an independent evaluation that would measure how often managers change Timpani’s output, how much time revisions take, or whether preferences and staffing needs are balanced differently from before the rollout.
What the reporting establishes—and what it does not
WIRED’s interviews document nurses’ concerns and individual experiences, alongside HCA’s account of Timpani’s purpose and oversight. They do not establish that the system caused patient harm, changed nurse retention, or delivered the operational benefits HCA describes. The report does not present a published independent clinical-outcome study or before-and-after data sufficient to verify those effects.

Retzloff described the broader concern this way: “We are overriding clinical judgment and the human-to-human piece of health care with an app.” It is a nurse’s characterization of the problem, not a finding that the system has overridden clinical judgment in every case. Evaluating that claim would require evidence about the schedules generated, the edits made by nursing leaders, staffing and experience on each shift, and resulting care outcomes.

WIRED reported that former HCA data-science manager Angelique Russell sued HCA, alleging that she was fired in retaliation for raising concerns about Timpani and alleging routine deletion of data used to create schedules. At the time of WIRED’s report, HCA had not formally responded in court, and Russell declined to comment. These are allegations in a lawsuit, not court findings; the subsequent court status is not established here.

The report also said National Nurses United leaders sought information about Timpani and that a union at an HCA psychiatric center filed a grievance over scheduling preferences, with arbitration anticipated. The outcome of that grievance or arbitration is not established in the reported account. WIRED put the union’s membership at about 10,000 of HCA’s 100,000 nurses.
A separate Palantir-related scheduling story is not about Timpani
WIRED also reported complaints at Rayus Radiology about a different Palantir Foundry-based tool, designed to populate scheduling fields from physician orders. Internal documents reviewed by WIRED reportedly showed mismatched patient profiles, requested tests or scans, and generated personal details that did not match source records. Schedulers reportedly suspected non-standard forms, illegible handwriting, and insufficient human review played a role.
Rayus spokesperson Kit Crancer disputed the broad characterization, saying the company uses technology “to support, not replace, appropriate human judgment and oversight.” This workflow concerns transferring information from physician orders into radiology scheduling fields; it is distinct from Timpani’s function of generating nurse rosters and does not prove anything about Timpani’s performance.
