The same integration can succeed in a sandbox and fail in production because the two environments may not share the same endpoints, credentials, permissions, quotas, data, event settings, or runtime rules. A successful demo proves that one path worked under test conditions; it does not prove that the production account can run the same workload safely.

Why sandbox success is not production proof

A sandbox is a controlled approximation, not necessarily a production duplicate. Its contents may be copied from a particular point in time, its integrations may be disabled, and its limits or security checks may differ. Zendesk, for example, says its sandbox reflects a point-in-time copy of production settings and data and does not stay synchronized: Zendesk sandbox data guidance.

These differences are vendor-specific. A limit documented for one Salesforce API, for instance, does not predict the limit for another provider or even another Salesforce call path. Treat sandbox results as evidence about the tested configuration and scenario, not as a blanket guarantee.

Check the production endpoint and credentials first

Sandbox and production commonly have separate base URLs and authentication details. Zendesk explicitly documents differences in endpoints and authentication between the environments: Zendesk sandbox testing guidance.

Ideal for gaming, video editing, and multitasking, it provides expansive and crisp multi-display support.

A deployment can therefore fail in either direction: the code may still target the sandbox endpoint, or it may reach the production endpoint with sandbox credentials. Inspect the values actually resolved by the running production service, including environment-variable or secret-manager injection. Do not rely only on a local configuration file or a successful test from a developer machine.

  • Confirm the runtime’s final base URL and environment, not just the intended setting.
  • Confirm that the credential belongs to the correct production account and has not expired or been rotated.
  • Check the provider’s own authentication and authorization error response before changing code.

Verify API access, roles, and production entitlement

Valid credentials do not guarantee that the production organization or user is allowed to make the call. Salesforce documents that API access depends on the organization’s edition and licenses, and that the assigned user must have the API Enabled permission. If the org has no API access, Salesforce documents the API_DISABLED_FOR_ORG error; user-level API permission is a separate requirement: Salesforce REST API access requirements.

Check the target provider’s specific role, scope, and resource-permission requirements as well. There is no single OAuth-scope checklist that applies to every integration: a token can authenticate successfully while lacking permission for the particular resource or operation.

Understand production quotas and 429 responses

A sandbox quota can make a production workload look safer than it is. Salesforce Help states that sandbox orgs default to 5,000,000 API calls per 24 hours, and explicitly warns that this does not reflect production entitlement. Production entitlement depends on the org’s edition, licenses, and add-ons: Salesforce API request limits. Check the entitlement for the actual production org rather than using sandbox headroom as a forecast.

Some limits apply only to a named product and call path. Salesforce’s Agentforce Models API documentation lists a production REST limit of 2,000 LLM generations per minute per org, with model-specific variation. The same documentation lists Apex limits of 500 requests per hour in sandbox and 150 per hour in demo or trial orgs. These figures apply to those Agentforce Models API paths, not to Salesforce APIs generally: Salesforce Agentforce Models API limits.

Diagnose an OpenAI API 429 before retrying

An OpenAI API 429 can indicate temporary request or token rate limiting, but it can also indicate exhausted prepaid credits or a spend or usage limit. Read the response message and code to identify which case applies. A billing or quota failure will not be fixed by retrying; resolve the balance or account limit instead. For temporary rate limits, honor Retry-After when provided. If it is absent or invalid, use bounded exponential backoff with jitter. Unsuccessful requests count toward per-minute limits, so rapid repeated retries can make recovery harder: OpenAI API error codes and handling.

Test the data and behavior that production actually uses

Mock data and fixtures can hide assumptions about real records, institutions, and event ordering. Plaid notes that Sandbox may not reflect institution-specific behavior, can return inconsistent values across product calls, does not send email or SMS, and omits OCR or image processing in some flows. It also permits HTTP redirect URIs in Sandbox while requiring HTTPS in Production, and production performs authentication checks that Sandbox does not: Plaid Sandbox documentation.

Use representative test cases to check assumptions about null fields, pending records, identity verification, ordering, and event timing. Those are testing practices, not guarantees that any particular provider will simulate every production edge case. Where a provider documents a production-only check or an omitted sandbox feature, test the production requirement directly before release.

Prove the webhook path and side effects

A webhook test proves only that the event and configuration path you exercised worked. In Zendesk, webhook configurations are replicated to a sandbox but deactivated by default to prevent calls to live services; API tokens are not copied and need to be recreated: Zendesk sandbox data guidance.

Plaid says most production webhooks also fire in Sandbox, but documents exceptions, including Transfer and some Investments events: Plaid Sandbox documentation. Verify the exact event type, destination, signature or authentication check, and downstream side effect that the integration depends on. Keep sandbox tests from triggering unintended live actions.

Check timeout behavior and capture useful evidence

Some runtimes impose explicit response deadlines. Zendesk’s AI agents workspace times out API responses after 9 seconds; this is a Zendesk-specific limit, not a general API timeout: Zendesk AI agents API integration FAQ. Measure the full downstream response time under realistic conditions and test what the integration does when a dependency responds slowly or not at all.

For each failed request, retain the timestamp with timezone, endpoint, status, exact error body and code, request ID, elapsed time, and the relevant account limit. OpenAI recommends collecting the exact error, request IDs, time and timezone, and relevant limit when escalating: OpenAI API error codes and handling. Redact API keys, bearer tokens, webhook signatures, and personal data before storing or sharing logs.

Use a production-readiness checklist

  1. Resolve the live configuration: verify the production URL, credential source, and account in the deployed runtime.
  2. Confirm authorization: check organization-level API entitlement, user or service-account permissions, scopes, and access to the specific resource.
  3. Model the workload: estimate request volume and concurrency for the production plan and call path; account for provider-specific rate and spend limits.
  4. Exercise realistic inputs: cover representative records and edge cases, including missing or pending data and events that can arrive out of order.
  5. Test exact events and side effects: verify the production-required webhook types, delivery destination, authentication, and safe handling of retries.
  6. Exercise failure paths: test 429 handling, bounded backoff, timeouts, and the behavior when a dependency is unavailable.
  7. Prepare observability: capture redacted request IDs, error details, timestamps, and latency so a failure can be traced to the provider or the integration.

Roll out with a way to detect and contain failure

Where the deployment supports it, release to limited traffic or a staged cohort before expanding. Alert on production errors, latency, rate limiting, and unexpected volume; assign an owner to review them. Keep a rollback path available so a faulty integration can be disabled or reverted without losing the ability to diagnose what happened.
