AI in schools is not one technology, and the available evidence does not show that every use is a disaster. But the case for caution is real: schools need to validate tools, protect student information and show that claimed benefits justify the risks. The sharpest documented warning in the available reporting concerns surveillance of school devices—not proof that classroom generative AI harms learning.
What “AI in schools” can mean
Arguments about AI in education often combine tools that do very different jobs. Generative AI may help produce instructional materials or support tutoring; monitoring software scans activity on school devices or accounts for content that may signal a safety concern. Automated administrative tools are another category. Evidence about one use cannot establish whether another works or is safe.

What the evidence says about benefits—and what it does not
Generative AI and instruction
The U.S. Department of Education’s July 22, 2025 guidance describes federal grant-supported uses such as instructional materials, high-impact tutoring, and college and career pathway exploration. It also emphasizes privacy, engagement with parents and teachers, educator professional development and AI literacy. That guidance identifies policy priorities and possible uses; it is not independent evidence that the tools improve student achievement. The sources available for this article establish no learning-gain, test-score or academic-achievement effect size.

UNESCO’s guidance for generative AI in education, published September 7, 2023 and last updated January 16, 2026, warns that tools and product releases are moving faster than regulatory frameworks. It says that, in most countries, a lack of national rules leaves user privacy unprotected and educational institutions largely unprepared to validate tools. UNESCO recommends privacy safeguards, age limits for independent conversations with platforms, and human-centered, age-appropriate ethical validation and pedagogical design. This is guidance about responsible use, not a finding that every tool is harmful—or effective.

Monitoring and student safety
The evidence picture is different for surveillance. The AP and Seattle Times investigation reported that it found no independent research showing that these monitoring systems measurably lower student suicide rates or reduce violence. It attributed to a 2023 RAND study the conclusion that evidence of benefits or risks was “scant.” That is a specific evidence gap about monitoring systems; it does not establish that classroom AI has no educational benefits.
What one school-monitoring investigation found
The AP and Seattle Times examined Gaggle, a system that scans student writing and searches on school-issued devices, as well as activity when students use school accounts on personal devices. Potentially concerning material may go to human reviewers, who can alert schools. The investigation offers a concrete case, not a national count or a verdict on every product.

Alerts are not verified incidents
In Vancouver Public Schools, between October 2023 and October 2024, nearly 2,200 students—about 10% of district enrollment—were the subject of an alert. At Vancouver School of Arts and Academics, about one in four students had communications that triggered an alert. The district’s technology flagged more than 1,000 documents for suicide and nearly 800 for threats of violence. These figures describe alerts and flagged documents: they are not confirmed incidents, unique student counts for each category, or validated measures of prevention.

The report also describes alerts triggered by an essay about consent, a joking exchange and a student story containing mildly violent imagery. Such examples illustrate how context can be difficult for automated systems to interpret; they do not show that every alert is false or harmful.

Privacy, trust and the possibility of useful intervention
The investigation reported concerns that sensitive LGBTQ+ information could reach school staff or families, and that some students felt less able to search or write privately. Zoe Reiland, discussing her concern about searching on a school Chromebook, told the reporters: “I was too scared to be curious.” That account illustrates a reported student experience; it does not measure how common the feeling is.
The report also includes examples of counselors or other staff being alerted to students who might need support. A former superintendent described a student using the monitoring system to communicate with a school staff member. The potential for intervention matters, but an alert only helps if people can assess it appropriately and respond. Benjamin Boudreaux, an AI ethics researcher and co-author of the RAND report, put the capacity issue this way: “If you don’t have the right number of mental health counselors, issuing more alerts is not actually going to improve suicide prevention.”

A records exposure raised a separate security concern
The investigation reported that a records request inadvertently exposed almost 3,500 sensitive, unredacted student documents to reporters. It said Gaggle later changed screenshot access so that, after 72 hours, only logged-in account users could view them. The company said the time-limited access was intended to let emergency contacts respond quickly. The incident makes access controls and retention practices concrete questions for any school considering a monitoring service; it does not by itself establish how every school or product handles records.
What schools and families should ask before deployment
A feature list is not enough to judge an education AI tool. Schools should be able to explain its purpose, the evidence for its intended outcome, and what happens to student information and to students when the system is wrong.

- Purpose and age suitability: What specific educational or safety need is the tool meant to address? Is its use appropriate for the students’ ages and the setting?
- Evidence: Who evaluated the tool, what outcome did they measure, and was the evaluation independent? Distinguish a vendor claim or policy endorsement from measured student outcomes.
- Data and access: What information is collected, who can view it, how long is it retained, whether it is disclosed further, and whether it is used for any other purpose.
- Notice and input: Have students, parents, teachers and affected communities been told how the tool works and given meaningful ways to raise concerns?
- Human review and recourse: Who checks an alert or AI-generated recommendation, how are errors corrected, and how can a student or family challenge a decision?
- Capacity and equity: Can the school respond to alerts or recommendations with qualified staff? Does the tool work fairly and accessibly for the students who will use or be monitored by it?
- Security and contract terms: What safeguards govern access, retention, disclosure and reuse, and what commitments are written into the school’s agreement with the provider?
FERPA does not mean “no vendor access”
For U.S. schools, the Department of Education’s Student Privacy Policy Center describes FERPA’s general rule against disclosing personally identifiable information from education records without written consent, alongside exceptions that apply under specified conditions. In some circumstances, a school may share data with a contractor providing an institutional service. Whether an exception applies depends on the circumstances and its requirements, which may include a written agreement. FERPA is not a blanket ban on vendor access; schools and families should ask what legal basis and contractual safeguards apply to a particular service.
When a school should pause
A school should not treat urgency, novelty or a long feature list as proof that deployment is justified. A pause is warranted when decision-makers cannot explain the tool’s purpose, show credible evidence for the intended outcome, describe its data practices in plain language, or identify the people and process responsible for acting on results. For a safety-monitoring system, schools should also be able to explain how potentially false alerts are handled and what human support is available afterward. If those basics are unsettled, the responsible next step is to resolve them before expanding use.
The tech industry’s push into schools deserves scrutiny, but “AI in schools is a disaster” goes further than these sources support. They do support a firm standard: no tool should be adopted on promise alone, and student safety claims must be weighed against privacy, transparency, independent evidence and the school’s ability to respond.
