AI is becoming a practical layer in digital marketing, helping teams develop creative, plan campaigns, analyze results, segment audiences and prepare reports. But adoption is not the same as successful integration: useful results depend on fitting the technology to a real workflow, using appropriate data and measuring business outcomes rather than counting AI-generated content.

How widely are businesses using AI in marketing?

AI use is growing, but it is not yet universal—and the available figures measure different groups. The U.S. Census Bureau’s April 2026 paper estimates that 18% of U.S. firms used AI in at least one business function during the November 2025–January 2026 reference period. Among firms using AI, 52% reported using it in sales and marketing, the most commonly reported function. The paper also says 57% of AI-adopting firms used it in three or fewer business functions.

Those Census figures describe firms and their business functions. They should not be treated as a measure of how many marketing teams have integrated AI into campaigns. Gartner’s separate survey of 418 marketing leaders, fielded from July to September 2024 and published in February 2025, found that 27% reported limited or no generative AI adoption in marketing campaigns. That survey is a snapshot of respondents at that time, not a current census of all marketers.

The gap between experimentation and dependable use matters. Gartner Senior Director Analyst Suzanne Schwartz said, “Many believe GenAI will transform marketing, but despite the hype, many CMOs feel that their GenAI investments have yet to pay off.” The practical question is therefore not simply whether a business has adopted AI, but whether it improves a task or outcome enough to justify the data, integration and operating effort involved.

Where AI can support digital marketing work

Published survey findings identify several marketing tasks where organizations are applying generative AI. These are use cases, not guarantees of better campaigns or lower costs.

Creative development

Among organizations that had adopted generative AI, 77% in Gartner’s survey used it for creative development. Teams may use generative tools to explore concepts, draft variations or adapt material for different formats. Human review remains important for accuracy, brand voice, rights and suitability for the intended audience.

Campaign planning and strategy

AI can assist with planning by organizing information, generating options and supporting analysis. The value depends on whether the inputs reflect the business’s actual audience, constraints and goals. A generated plan is a starting point for judgment, not evidence that the plan will perform.

Analysis, evaluation and reporting

Gartner reported that 47% of organizations using generative AI saw a large benefit from it in campaign evaluation and reporting. That is a reported survey benefit, not an independently measured lift in sales or campaign performance. Reporting is most useful when teams can trace conclusions to reliable data and use them to make a decision.

Audience segmentation and personalization

Salesforce’s tenth State of Marketing report says 83% of surveyed marketers recognized a shift toward personalized, two-way messaging, while only one in four were satisfied with their use of data to power those interactions. The report is based on a survey of nearly 4,500 marketing leaders worldwide and is published by Salesforce; its findings describe respondents’ views, not independent proof of product performance.

AI may help teams organize audience signals or tailor communications, but personalization is only as sound as the data and rules behind it. More targeting is not automatically better: teams need to consider whether the data is appropriate to use and whether the resulting communication is relevant and respectful.

Do AI users report better business results?

Some surveys show positive outcomes among businesses using AI, but association does not establish that AI caused those outcomes. Google’s economic-impact resource page attributes figures to a 2025 U.S. Chamber of Commerce report: 85% of small businesses using AI reported higher sales over the prior year, and 84% reported higher profits. These are self-reported outcomes among AI users. They do not show what those businesses’ results would have been without AI or isolate AI from other factors.

The U.S. Census Bureau’s 2026 paper also reports a correlation between commercial performance and the breadth of AI integration. A correlation can identify a relationship, but it does not prove that broader AI integration produced stronger performance. Businesses with more resources, better data or more mature operations may both integrate more AI and perform differently for other reasons.

How to decide whether an AI tool fits

Assess a tool against the work it is supposed to improve, not its feature list alone. A useful comparison covers the following dimensions:

  • Workflow fit and task quality: Identify the exact task and check whether the output meets your standards with realistic inputs. Include the time required for review and correction.
  • Data access, privacy and security: Establish what information the tool receives, how it is handled and who can access it. Do not assume a tool is appropriate for customer or confidential data without checking its terms and your organization’s requirements.
  • Integration and operating effort: Consider how the tool fits existing systems and handoffs. Account for setup, staff training, quality checks and maintenance—not just the effort to generate an output.
  • Measurable effect: Decide which campaign or business outcome should change, and how you will distinguish a meaningful improvement from normal variation.
  • Cost and switching friction: Include ongoing operating costs and the effort of moving data or workflows if you later change tools. In a January 2025 staff report on major cloud-provider and AI-developer partnerships, the Federal Trade Commission discussed potential lock-in and access to sensitive information. That report concerns those partnerships; it is not an assessment or ranking of marketing products.

How to run a useful AI marketing pilot

A pilot should test a business question, not merely demonstrate that a tool can produce content. Keep the scope small enough to review carefully, and define success before the first output is generated.

  1. Choose one workflow. Specify the task, who owns it and where it fits in the existing process—for example, drafting campaign variations or preparing a recurring performance summary.
  2. Set a baseline. Record how the workflow performs now, using a relevant measure such as completion time, correction rate, campaign response or another business outcome. Use a comparison that makes sense for the task.
  3. Define guardrails. Decide which data may be used, who reviews outputs, what must be checked and what kinds of material require human approval.
  4. Run the pilot under ordinary conditions. Include the time spent checking, editing and integrating outputs. A fast first draft is not a time saving if review and rework erase the gain.
  5. Compare results with the baseline. Evaluate the chosen outcome and operational effort, not output volume alone. Note limitations in the comparison, including other changes that could have affected performance.
  6. Make a deliberate next-step decision. Continue, adjust or stop based on the evidence, workflow fit and risks. Do not treat adoption itself as proof of success.

What is likely to shape AI’s role in marketing?

The evidence supports a measured outlook: AI is already being used in marketing-related work, particularly creative development, and some adopters report benefits in campaign evaluation and reporting. At the same time, Gartner’s 2025 findings show that limited adoption and unmet expectations persisted among surveyed marketing leaders. The next meaningful step for a business is not necessarily adopting more tools; it is connecting a suitable tool to usable data, clear oversight and an outcome the team can evaluate.

That makes integration—not novelty—the key decision. Businesses can learn whether AI belongs in a workflow by testing it against a baseline, accounting for review and operating costs, and treating reported survey outcomes as evidence of experience rather than proof of causation.
