Germany saw more than 3,000 startups founded in the first half of 2026, a record pace, as interest in AI and increased venture funding met an economy under pressure from industrial weakness. The figures point to a broad startup upswing—not proof that young companies will replace lost industrial jobs or reverse the downturn.
How many startups were founded in Germany in the first half of 2026?
More than 3,000 startups were founded in Germany from January through June 2026, according to economy ministry data reported by Reuters. That was an all-time record and 52% more than in the previous six months. The comparison is with the preceding half-year, not with the first half of 2025.
The new companies span more than artificial intelligence. Around one-third were AI-focused, Reuters reported. Software accounted for 28% of new startups, healthcare 9%, and food 6%; those categories do not add up to, or exhaust, the full total.
What is driving the boom in German startups?
AI interest and demand for new business tools
AI is a prominent part of the surge, both as a focus for new companies and as a potential tool for established businesses seeking to reduce costs or automate routine work. Berlin-based enterprise software company Langdock illustrates the business-to-business side of the trend. Its chief technology officer, Hendrik Hofstadt, said legacy industrial companies need to reinvent themselves and described the market as open to new solutions. Reuters reported that Langdock had around 60 employees and €50 million ($56 million) in revenue, but did not give a precise measurement date for those company figures.

More venture capital, alongside concerns about the business climate
The German Startup Association’s Startup Monitor put venture capital raised by German startups at €8 billion from January through September 2026—more than the total for all of 2025. The same report gave a separate figure of €5.7 billion for German AI startup funding over January–September. These are distinct reported totals; the available account does not explain their precise category methodology, so they should not be treated as directly additive.
For comparison, the report put U.S. AI startup funding at nearly €308 billion over the same nine-month period. It provides no methodology or normalization details for that comparison, so the figures alone do not establish the relative quality or performance of the two startup ecosystems.

Capital is not the only measure of a supportive environment. In a German Startup Association survey of around 1,800 companies, only about one-third considered Germany an attractive place to start a business. Ifo Institute forecaster Timo Wollmershaeuser warned that startups might move abroad to seek funding, saying: “If these companies quickly move elsewhere looking for funding, then the ideas we develop here end up creating value somewhere else.” That is a concern about a possible outcome, not a forecast established by the funding figures.

Industrial weakness as an opening—and a challenge
The startup surge is unfolding alongside pressure on Germany’s industrial base. Reuters cited an estimate by the IW German Economic Institute that competition from China contributed to the loss of around 400,000 German industrial jobs between 2019 and 2025. The report presents AI startups that help established firms cut costs or automate routine tasks as one possible response. That does not show that startups have replaced those jobs or that AI investment can reverse industrial decline.

What kinds of startups are emerging beyond AI?
Examples in Reuters’ account show the range of businesses in the boom, including healthcare and consumer goods.
Menstruflow: a healthcare device for menstrual pain
Founded by Polina Sergeeva in 2023, Menstruflow sells a device designed to ease menstrual pain using transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS), adapted for period pain. Sergeeva said the idea came from the impact severe pain had on everyday plans. Reuters reported that the company’s sales rose 300% year over year in the first quarter, but the accessible account does not specify the calendar year. Medical certification and entry into retail were Sergeeva’s stated next goals at the time of reporting; they should not be read as completed approvals or launches.

Nghty Berlin: lingerie moving from online sales to a pop-up
Paulina Lutz launched Nghty Berlin’s first lingerie collection in December 2024. Reuters reported that the business had added a second collection and expanded from online-only sales into its first pop-up store, another example of startup activity outside software and AI.

What is Germany’s Startup and Scaleup Strategy?
In July 2026, Germany’s cabinet adopted a Startup and Scaleup Strategy containing 152 measures, Reuters reported. The strategy covers the path from founding a company to international growth, with stated aims including reducing bureaucracy and mobilizing private capital for areas such as technology, biotechnology, and defense.

Those aims describe government priorities, not demonstrated results. The strategy’s adoption does not by itself show that red tape has fallen, that more private capital has been invested, or that startups are staying in Germany. The survey finding that only about one-third of respondents considered the country attractive, and the Ifo forecaster’s concern about companies seeking money elsewhere, underscore the gap between policy intent and outcomes.

The first-half record and the nine-month funding figures show strong startup formation and capital activity in Germany during 2026. AI is a major part of that story, but the examples also include healthcare and consumer businesses. The data do not establish that the boom will offset industrial job losses, that the new companies will survive and scale, or that the government strategy will resolve concerns about the business climate.
