Some video doorbells can speak to visitors when you are unavailable, but “auto-message” can mean either a prerecorded reply you select or a more conversational AI feature. Ring’s Alexa+ Greetings is described as the latter: it can ask visitors questions, relay package instructions, and capture messages. Those capabilities depend on a compatible Ring doorbell, an active subscription and account setup, and local availability.
What AI greetings and doorbell auto-messages do
A doorbell response can be a fixed line or a conversation. With a preset response, you choose a message in the app and the doorbell plays it. With Ring Alexa+ Greetings, Ring and Amazon describe a system that can engage with visitors who press the bell and, for delivery personnel, interact proactively. Examples include asking a visitor for more information, sharing package-placement instructions, answering follow-up questions, and recording a message for later review.
Ring says Alexa+ Greetings combines Alexa’s conversational capability with Ring Video Descriptions. Amazon describes Video Descriptions as concise text descriptions of motion activity observed by Ring doorbells and cameras. Ring’s support page says Greetings uses those descriptions, asks visitors who they are, and responds according to instructions set by the account holder. These are vendor descriptions of how the feature behaves; they do not establish independent recognition accuracy or reveal the system’s full technical architecture.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesCan my video doorbell answer the door for me?
It can provide a response when you are not at the door, but the exact interaction depends on the product. A selected Quick Response is a spoken preset, not an open-ended conversation. Alexa+ Greetings is described as conversational and able to handle follow-up questions, but it is a feature with specific Ring, Alexa, subscription, and availability requirements—not a capability of every video doorbell.

Can a doorbell tell delivery drivers where to leave a package?
Ring says Alexa+ Greetings can pass along package-placement instructions and respond to delivery personnel. The instructions are set by the account holder. That is different from assuming every doorbell can recognize every courier or package reliably: the vendor material describes intended interactions, not a measured accuracy rate.
How Ring Alexa+ Greetings differs from preset replies
| Feature | How the visitor hears a response | Can the homeowner customize the spoken content? |
|---|---|---|
| Ring Alexa+ Greetings | Ring describes a conversational interaction that can ask questions, follow account-holder instructions, share package directions, and capture messages. | Ring says it responds according to instructions set by the account holder. |
| Ring Quick Replies | The homeowner selects a preset message for the doorbell to play. | The reviewed Ring description establishes preset selection, not custom recorded replies. |
| Google Nest Quick Responses | A response is selected after a doorbell press and played as prerecorded speech. Google says, “Quick Responses are pre-recorded messages that Google Nest doorbells can speak to a visitor if you’re not able to come to the door.” | Google says users cannot customize or record personal Quick Responses. |
| Older Ring Alexa Greetings | Alexa could ask how it could help, then offer to take a message or provide package instructions. | The cited Ring description focuses on Alexa’s offered options, rather than user-recorded messages. |
The distinction matters when shopping: a doorbell that can speak is not necessarily using AI, and a feature described as AI is not necessarily triggered automatically in every circumstance. Google’s documentation says its Quick Responses are selected by the user; Ring’s current Alexa+ description includes different visitor interactions.
