Investigations have documented AI-generated healers and doctors making unsupported health claims in Instagram Reels and Facebook videos, sometimes alongside links to supplements and paid guides. The findings show a visible pattern in selected account samples—not how much of Meta Reels as a whole is AI-generated.
What investigators found on Instagram and Facebook
Maldita.es reported two investigations in 2026. The samples point to synthetic health-advice personas appearing on both Instagram and Facebook, but the outlets’ figures describe the accounts they examined, not the platforms’ overall content.
Instagram: 25 verified profiles
In a report published July 27 and updated July 29, Maldita.es reviewed 25 Instagram profiles with Meta Verified badges. The outlet said those accounts had more than five million subscribers and over 389 million video views. Those totals apply to the selected profiles, not Instagram as a whole. Maldita.es’ Instagram investigation describes AI-generated people offering health advice and promoting supplements on Amazon and ebooks about holistic cures.
One example was “Baba Matryona,” a synthetic Siberian healer persona. In a Reel, she told viewers: “Follow me and type in the words blood pressure in the comments”, then promised to show a “natural, science-backed way” to reverse it. The line is a fictional persona’s pitch, not medical guidance. The profile linked to an Amazon storefront selling a hydration and wellness powder; its product page said the powder was not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent disease. Maldita.es reported that Amazon told the outlet it had opened an investigation.

Facebook: a separate sample of 232 profiles and pages
A September 7 report from Maldita.es examined 232 Facebook profiles and pages publishing health advice. The outlet said the sample had more than 81.5 million combined followers and that 36.2% of the profiles and pages published videos featuring AI-generated characters posing as doctors. Its data were gathered August 24–28, 2026. The Facebook investigation also says its sample does not represent every such profile.
The report describes unsupported claims about supposed cures for cancer, dementia, and diabetes, including claims that fruit could “starve” cancer. Some accounts directed viewers to websites selling supplements, guides, or books. Maldita.es also found sites that requested phone numbers and disclosed paid SMS charges in small print. These are findings from the outlet’s sample; they do not establish that every account or linked site uses the same tactics.

Why an AI healer can look like an authority
A synthetic persona may be presented as a doctor, healer, or reassuring older adviser, creating an impression of experience or expertise without establishing that a real, qualified professional is speaking. A confident delivery, medical-sounding language, or a promise of a simple cure is not evidence that a treatment works.
Neither a Meta Verified badge nor an AI information label answers the medical question. The Instagram investigation found AI personas among profiles with Meta Verified badges. A badge is not proof that a health claim is accurate, and an AI label identifies a signal about content origin—not whether the advice is safe or supported.

How Meta says it handles AI content—and what the reports show
Meta’s stated approach is to apply AI information labels when it detects industry-standard indicators of AI generation or when a user discloses that content was AI-generated. Meta says it will generally keep such content on its platforms with labeling and context unless it violates another policy. In a post by Monika Bickert, Meta’s Vice President of Content Policy, the company said: “We agree that providing transparency and additional context is now the better way to address this content.” Meta’s explanation of its labeling approach is a statement of policy, not an independent audit of whether labels appeared consistently on the accounts in the investigations.
In its Facebook sample, Maldita.es described visible signs of AI generation, including impossible figures, blurred backgrounds, and unintelligible text, as well as examining visible watermarks. Such clues may prompt skepticism, but their presence or absence cannot establish that a medical claim is true.

Meta separately reported that views and time spent watching original Facebook Reels approximately doubled in the second half of 2025 compared with the same period in 2024. It also said it removed more than 20 million accounts impersonating large creators during 2025. Those are Meta’s figures about original Reels and creator impersonation, not measurements of AI health misinformation or the investigated accounts. Meta’s 2026 account of its Facebook enforcement and Reels efforts does not establish how effectively it addressed the health claims in these reports.

The investigations document commercial routes from health content to products and paid information, without establishing that every account earns money or that affiliate income is its only motive. The Instagram report describes Amazon storefronts, Amazon Associates tags on some links, supplements, and ebooks. The Facebook report describes links to supplements, guides, and books, including sites with paid SMS charges disclosed in small print. The existence of a product link is not evidence that a product can treat the condition discussed in a video.

What viewers should check before acting on a health Reel
- Separate identity from expertise. A verified badge does not by itself establish that the person is a real clinician or that a claim is medically reliable.
- Be cautious with cure promises. Claims that a food or supplement can cure or reverse a serious disease warrant independent medical scrutiny, not reliance on a short video.
- Follow the link before sharing details. Check whether it leads to a product storefront, paid guide, or signup page, and read any charges or terms before entering personal information.
- Look for evidence beyond the video. A label about AI origin, a convincing face, or technical-sounding wording does not substantiate a treatment claim.
What these investigations do—and do not—establish
The reports show that AI-generated health personas and unsupported cure claims appeared in the specific Instagram and Facebook samples they examined, with some accounts connected to commercial offers. They do not provide a representative estimate of how common these videos are across Meta Reels, and they do not establish that every account, claim, or product follows the same pattern. The phrase “filling up” is therefore best read as a description of a conspicuous reported phenomenon, not a measured platform-wide trend.
